If your spouse tries to control what you do, is unfaithful, makes you feel guilty, constantly criticizes you โ€” or causes you physical or emotional pain โ€” you may be in a toxic marriage, experts warn.

Staying in a toxic marriage can affect your self-esteem, as well as your physical and mental wellbeing.

Melissa Hunter, a licensed professional counselor and former family law mediator from Aurora, Colo., says the most obvious sign of a toxic marriage is that your spouse treats you disrespectfully.

โ€œThis can show up in the form of belittling you, talking over you, being dismissive of your wants, needs, and opinions, ignoring you, talking poorly about you to others, to name a few,โ€ says Hunter, who counsels people with relationship challenges and helps them to establish healthy boundaries or leave their relationships.

If you are in a toxic marriage, there are steps you can take to leave or to salvage the marriage if you believe it can be fixed.

Here's what you should know:

Signs of a toxic marriage

The โ€˜Big 4โ€™ signs of a toxic marriage

What happens in a toxic marriage

How to deal with a toxic marriage

What are the signs of a toxic marriage?

How do you spot a toxic relationship? Toxic relationships or marriages and unhappy marriages are different.

A toxic marriage goes beyond being dissatisfied in your marriage. Amira Martin, a licensed clinical social worker and founder of MA Therapy in Brooklyn, N.Y., says toxic marriages are lacking the overarching support that makes people feel safe, loved, and valued.

โ€œTo make matters worse, their time and energy is often being fed into their toxic marriage, which can feel like a consistent emotional drain,โ€ Martin says.

Martin points to these common signs of a toxic marriage:

1. One person is controlling and making all of the decisions โ€” about where to live, whether or not to have children, how many children, who handles which household duties, etc.

โ€œMaking decisions in a marriage is about sharing power,โ€ Martin says. โ€œWhen one party consistently makes all of the important decisions on their own and the other simply follows, it's likely there is a significant power imbalance in the relationship.โ€

2. Intimacy is used as a bargaining tool, rather than a time to connect or build closeness. One or both parties might withhold intimacy โ€” physical sex or emotional โ€” unless they get what they want from the other person.

For instance, one partner might make the other person feel guilty for spending time with friends or try to isolate them from family members by acting mad or distant.

3. Dishonesty that goes beyond occasional white lies โ€” like lying about major financial issues, job struggles, and relationships outside of the marriage.

โ€œIf you can't rely on your partner, who you are trusting with your mind, body, and many other aspects of your life and well being, then you cannot possibly have a healthy marriage,โ€ Martin says.

15+ signs you are falling out of love and how to move forward

The โ€˜Big 4โ€™ signs of a toxic marriage

Lynda Smith, PhD, LCPC, LPCC, LPT, and board-certified sex therapist has identified the โ€˜4 As' of a toxic relationship.

  • Adultery โ€” emotional, physical, financial cheating
  • Addiction โ€” drugs, alcohol, porn, gambling, spending
  • Abuse โ€” physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, financial
  • Agendas

โ€œCouples struggling with the 4 As are more likely to divorce than the non-4 As, which include: lack of communication, growing apart, and boredom,โ€ says Smith, who practices out of Boise, Idaho. โ€œWhile some signs of a toxic relationship are obvious, others can be harder to detect: disrespect, gaslighting, controlling behavior, lacking empathy, selfishness.โ€

For the couples involved, a toxic relationship feels isolating and fearful, says Dr. Emily Stone, PhD, LMFT-S. โ€œA toxic marriage will be one where one or both partners do not feel safe to be able to communicate wants or needs without repercussions. Those repercussions might be emotional, physical or mental. In a toxic marriage, one or both partners do not feel like they can have a life or relationships outside of the marriage.โ€

Other toxic marriage signs

These are some other warning signs of a toxic marriage, according to Katina Tarver, a certified mediator and mental health counselor based in Houston.

  • โ€‹Abuse of all kinds โ€” mental, physical and emotional
  • Monitoring social media, phone activity, and emails
  • Name calling or insulting without remorse, even under the guise of โ€œjoking aroundโ€
  • Shifting blame when confronted about toxic behaviors

What happens in a toxic marriage?

Rachel Fishman Green, Esq., a divorce mediator and attorney also based in Brooklyn, says a good way to evaluate whether you have a toxic marriage is to compare your marriage to the principles of the โ€œFour Horsemenโ€ by psychologist and author John Gottman.

His approach predicted whether a couple would divorce with 91% accuracy, based on whether a couple did these things during a fight:

1. Criticism directed at the person overall, rather than a specific position, habit or action. Fishman offered this example:

โ€œYou are so selfish. You never think of me or anyone else.โ€ vs. โ€œCould you text me when you will be home? I start to worry when youโ€™re more than an hour late.โ€

2. Contempt/negative feelings toward the other person and โ€œhitting below the belt.โ€

Example: “Of course you feel like you got nothing done. You are the least efficient worker I have ever seen. You are always late and so disorganized. Itโ€™s agonizing to live with you.”

3. Defensiveness when things go wrong and making sure all blame falls on the other personโ€™s shoulders.

Example: โ€œDid you call our insurance agent to talk about lowering our rate? Of course you didnโ€™t, even though you knew I was too busy to do it.โ€ vs. โ€œOh, I knew you would be busy, too.  Iโ€™ll do it now.โ€

Fishman says that in a healthy marriage, each spouse accepts some responsibility when things go wrong and acknowledges their spouseโ€™s perspective, making it easier for them to return the favor down the road.

4. Stonewalling your spouse โ€” in other words, tuning him/her out or not responding and engaging in evasive or distracting behavior during an argument.

Fishman says stonewalling is the result of the other three fighting behaviors.

โ€œItโ€™s impossible to evade the criticism and contempt of your spouse, so you have to tune him/her out,โ€ she says.

How do you define a single mom vs. solo mom?

How do you deal with a toxic marriage?

Martin says the most important thing you can do in a toxic marriage is to take care of yourself first.

โ€œNo matter how difficult your spouse or how unhealthy and toxic your marriage, you have some well being, value, and purpose outside of that toxic marriage,โ€ Martin says.

She suggests:

  • First and foremost, getting out of an abusive or dangerous situation
  • Scheduling time to be social each week and spending time with friends and family (online time counts)
  • Keeping a journal to express and validate your thoughts, feelings, and needs
  • Having hobbies you enjoy
  • Exploring a career or educational path you want to pursue
  • Maintaining or improving your physical or emotional health
  • Being honest with yourself, your friends, family, and loved ones about how you are feeling and your concerns within your marriage

โ€œTelling the people in your life who care about you what you are going through does a couple of things. It allows for open and honest feedback, which can give you greater clarity, and it allows you to get the support you need,โ€ Martin says.

If you arenโ€™t in a dangerous situation and think your relationship can be salvaged, Martin suggests:

  • Individual therapy to get the support and clarity you need
  • Couples therapy to work through the issues with your spouse
  • Writing out a plan about how and your spouse will tackle your issues

Once youโ€™ve tried making changes, reevaluate your relationship to see if things have improved. If they havenโ€™t, it may be time to consider leaving the marriage.

Can a toxic marriage be saved?

Brent Crowson, a licensed professional counselor in San Antonio, Texas, believes unhappy marriages and relationships can be saved if both partners are committed to making changes. However, toxic relationships should end, he said. โ€œAnd if there is abuse, get out.โ€

How do I deal with a toxic husband or a toxic wife?

What do you do when you are unhappy in your marriage or youโ€™re in a toxic marriage?

First, if your relationship is dangerous, get out.

In a toxic marriage, one or both partners never turn toward one another to have needs met โ€” they only turn outward โ€” which makes healing difficult, Stone says. โ€œOften, in a toxic relationship and in an unhappy marriage, there is a dance that has been created between the partners. Each partner knows his or her steps. Changing the dance steps, which are ingrained into their ways of relating, can be incredibly challenging for both.โ€

Stone's advice:

โ€œDo not deal with a toxic marriage alone. Get help. You do not have to navigate these decisions or changes on your own. If your partner will not go to couples counseling with you, then you can go on your own and get support from a therapist for your own healing.โ€

For Dani, the relationship flipped from unhappy to dangerous: โ€œIt was when he finally tried to hit me after years of wall punching and the like. The love snapped like a rubber band and hell no, in this case, it ain't coming back,โ€ she says. โ€œI ran like hell.โ€

What are the effects of a toxic marriage?

Corrie Sirkin, a family law attorney, mediator, and divorced mom from Manassas, Va., says a toxic marriage can have many negative effects on a person, including low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and insecurity.

โ€œBelittling by the person that allegedly knows you the best or loves you the most causes you to question your own sanity, stability, and worth,โ€ Sirkin says.

She says clients who suffered from depression and anxiety have reported that their symptoms greatly improved when they were no longer living with the toxic person and no longer under their control.

How to leave a toxic marriage

If youโ€™ve decided to leave a toxic marriage, check out our post on how to leave your husband or wife.

If you are in a toxic marriage and you fear for your safety, there are ways to get help.

If you are in immediate danger, dial 911. You can also contact a local domestic abuse organization by searching for โ€œdomestic abuse help near me.โ€

You can reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline 24/7 by calling 800-799-7233 or by texting START to 88788.

How to get over a toxic marriage

Getting over or moving on after a toxic marriage takes time, Sirkin says.

โ€œDuring a toxic marriage, you have potentially learned coping mechanisms that are not beneficial in healthy relationships,โ€ she says.

In a toxic relationship, you might have become used to giving immediate responses or justifying behavior to avoid consequences. Learning that you can take your time to think, reason, then respond is important.

Sirkin recommends talking to a therapist to help you get through this transitional period.

โ€œEven if the marriage or relationship was not healthy, most people will need to grieve the loss of the relationship or life that they thought that they were going to have,โ€ Sirkin says.

She suggests taking some time to think about what you want in your life after divorce, and prioritizing your needs, including making new friends.

โ€œConsider any things that you would like to do or try that you didn't because of your toxic relationship,โ€ Sirkin says. โ€œThen, try them or do it! Life is too short and too long to be unhappy.โ€

How do you know if your toxic marriage is worth saving?

Sirkin says itโ€™s difficult for most toxic people to change because they do not believe that there is anything wrong with their words or actions. They believe that the way that they treat other people is “deserved” or even helpful to the other person. This is why Sirkin advises people to leave a toxic marriage.

However, in the rare case that your spouse recognizes his or her toxic behavior and is willing to take steps to change it, your marriage may be worth saving.

How to end a toxic relationship or marriage

If you are in a toxic relationship or marriage, make a plan for where you are going to live, how you are going to support yourself, and how you are going to get your belongings from the home. Sirkin says it may be helpful to have a friend or family member with you when you inform your partner.

โ€œSome of my clients have informed their partner during marriage or couples counseling,โ€ Sirkin says.

If you are ending a toxic marriage, she recommends consulting an attorney about your options, especially if you are planning to leave a shared property and if there are children involved.

If your divorce is uncomplicated and mutually agreed upon, you can also start filing for divorce online.

Emmaโ€™s personal experience with BetterHelp

Personally, I found that finding and affording quality counseling from a therapist I connected with to be a huge challenge. Schedule challenges, high costs ($100+/hour in New York City where I lived, as my insurance does not pay for behavioral health), the time it takes to travel to a session, and investing the time to find a therapist that I really trusted and could help all stood in the way of seeking out counseling.

I finally found BetterHelp.

BetterHelp (often mistakenly referred to as “BetterHealth”) is the biggest online therapy app with nearly 1 million users, and makes getting counseling from a licensed therapist as easy as sending a chat message, or engaging in a video or phone session. Prices start at $65/week for unlimited messaging and weekly live sessions. Financial assistance available. Use this link to get 20% off and get connected with a therapist immediately >>

  • All BetterHelp plans include a weekly live video or phone session (your choice)
  • You choose how to communicate: Chat, email, phone, video, text
  • Used by more than 1 million people
  • Free and easy to change counselors
  • Financial aid available

What is BetterHelp?

BetterHelp is the largest provider of online therapy. They offer counseling services for individuals, couples, and teens working through depression, anxiety, grief, narcissistic personality disorder, stress, addiction, and more. With private communications through chat, phone, and video sessions, BetterHelp simplifies mental health treatment.

Is BetterHelp legit?

BetterHelp was founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs Alon Matas and Danny Bragonier, and acquired in 2014 by Teladoc, the publicly held telehealth company. Betterhelp maintains headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

BetterHelp has an A- rating, has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2015, and has 4.1 out of 5 stars.

An independent study in 2017 by the Berkeley Well-Being Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, confirmed several benefits of online counseling services. The report states that people receiving therapy with BetterHelp saw improvement similar to in-person treatment, and that symptoms of depression were reduced overall.

But this study and the positive online therapy reviews show BetterHelp is a legit company that can help clients work through their problems and improve their wellbeing.

Who is BetterHelp right for?

There are several threads and comments about BetterHelp on Reddit โ€” there are mixed reviews, but the takeaway is that the quality of therapy depends on the therapist, and the therapy-client chemistry:

Here's my personal experience with and review of BetterHelp:

How does BetterHelp work with individual therapy?

BetterHelp works by using technology to facilitate open communication between you and your therapist. To talk with your counselor, you can send text messages throughout the day or schedule a time for a live chat, phone call, or video session.

The signup is painless and begins with a short questionnaire you complete on the BetterHelp website to better understand why you are seeking therapy, and what your preferences are in terms of schedule, gender and race of therapist and other factors.

Getting paired with a therapist takes about 24 hours. However, you can exchange messages right away after that. In my experience, upon sign up I immediately received an email telling me who my therapist was, and a link to his profile. By the next morning he messaged me with what to expect in terms of communication frequency (he responds within 24 hours of all messaging), and a request to share with him my family history, any personal information, and goals for working together.

How does BetterHelp work with couples therapy?

You can sign up for couples counseling through BetterHelp, or its sister site Regain. Similar to the process for individual therapy, the couples BetterHelp counseling process is:

  1. Go to BetterHelp.com and create an account
  2. Set your preferences for a counselor's race, gender, age, political leaning and the type of help your relationship needs (better communication, overcoming infidelity, deciding to stay together, etc.)
  3. Add your partner's contact info to invite them into the account.

All messaging with the therapist is accessible and visible to both partners. Live sessions must be done from the same screen (the BetterHelp platform is not enabled for three-way calls).

Does your family need counseling?

How does BetterHelp protect my privacy?

“BetterHelp provides a personal, convenient chat room that can be used to communicate directly with your therapist. Anything you send to your therapist is encrypted and hosted on their robustly secured AWS cloud. Additionally, conversations with your therapists are covered by terms of confidentiality which provide an additional layer of contractual protection for your messages. More information about BetterHelp's privacy practices can be found on their Privacy Policy (with this link).” – from BetterHelp

In my personal experience using the platform, BetterHelp takes extensive measures to uphold its policy to protect your personal information and comply with the law.

Does BetterHelp have an app for therapy?

BetterHelp can be used through their secure website, or secure app, available through iTunes or Google Play. Both the mobile app and website allow you to choose a therapist, have a live video session, or use the secure text messaging feature on the platform. You can also sign up for and participate in a live Groupinar through the app.

I used the BetterHelp app on my iPhone X and found it very easy to use, with no glitches. The connection during my weekly live sessions was clear.

What do you do in therapy with BetterHelp?

In short: Therapy with BetterHelp is the same as regular therapy in-person in an office.

The differences are that BetterHelp sessions are less expensive and less time-consuming, and more convenient than driving to a counselor's office. Many want to know how long are sessions on BetterHelp? Live sessions on BetterHelp are 30 minutes, which is shorter than the typical 50-minute sessions. However, this is augmented by unlimited messaging between weekly calls. This feature was especially helpful on the first meeting, as I was able to write out in advance the lengthy process of sharing my family and relationship history, which typically takes up one or two entire counseling sessions. With BetterHelp, we jumped right in to working out all my problems!

The process of starting therapy with BetterHelp starts with getting matched with a counselor based on the preferences you select. All of BetterHelp's counselors:

  • Have a Master's or Doctorate degree
  • Are either accredited psychologists (PhD / PsyD), marriage and family therapists (LMFT), clinical social workers (LCSW / LMSW), or licensed professional counselors (LPC).
  • Are qualified and certified by their state's professional board
  • Have at least 3 years and 2,000 hours of hands-on experience

You will be matched with a therapist based on your preference for gender, race and age, specialty and experience, such as LBGTQ issues, depression, mental health issues, aging and menopause, sexuality, grief, addiction, relationship issues, abuse, parenting challenges, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, dating, self-esteem, trauma, eating disorders, health challenges, money and career problems, communication style, and more.

BetterHelp is not a crisis hotline, and it is not self-help, but professional counseling conducted online โ€” through email, chat, video or phone calls (your choice)

Some BetterHelp therapists specialize in different types of therapy:

  • Person-centered therapy, also called client-centered, or Rogerian therapy (referring to psychologist Carl Rogers), is a therapy where the therapist takes a non-directive, empathic approach that empowers and motivates the client in the therapeutic process.  This therapy is based on Rogersโ€™ notion that human beings naturally strive for and have the capacity to reach their human potential. The client-centered therapist is supportive  and does not provide direction or instructions, but rather, allows the client to guide the sessions.
  • Gestalt therapy is considered a type of client-centered therapy, one that helps clients focus on the present and understand what is really happening in their lives, rather than what they perceive to be happening based on their past experiences.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-focused approach that takes a hands-on, practical problem-solving method. CBTโ€™s goal is to change patterns of thought and behavior โ€” and therefore change how the client feels.
  • Psychodynamic therapy focuses on early attachment relationships and  the power of unconscious thought in driving thoughts, behavior and feelings.
  • Humanistic therapy requires the counselor to provide unrestricted acceptance, freeing the client to openly express their feelings and thoughts. Humanistic therapy often overlaps with client-centered therapy.
  • Interpersonal therapy focuses on improving interpersonal behavior and communication to help the patient understand how she contributes to her struggles, and by improving her relationships with others and herself, will receive the support and acceptance that will improve mood and wellbeing.
  • Schema-focused therapy seeks to create a new, healthier framework for your thinking, perception of recent events and view of relationships and the world.

Once you are paired with a therapist, you can start communicating by email or within the app's chat function, and, if you prefer, schedule a phone or video session.

This is what happened when I signed up with BetterHelp:

1. I went to BetterHelp.com. It took me about 10 minutes to fill out the intake form, and fill in my credit card info.

2. Immediately, I received a confirmation email with a match: Jorge (M.S.W., L.C.S.W.) I was happy that it was a man (as I requested), who has a strong background in spirituality as well as some issues that matched the help I need. His profile also included his license numbers, details about his experience, and several dozen client reviews:

List of Betterhelp services.

3. I then logged on to see his profile, and was prompted by a few questions from Jorge, including some of my family and personal history. I really appreciated that I could type this out ahead of our first session. If you have ever gone to therapy, you know that the first or second session is often a long intake process in which you recount all your family, relationship and health drama, as well as goals for therapy โ€” all of which you then have to repeat in the event you switch therapists. If I ever change counselors, I am totally copy-pasting this part!

4. In his welcome message, Jorge explained that we have unlimited communication via messaging, and he promised to respond within 24 hours. Personally, I prefer to do most of my work during weekly phone or video sessions, but unlimited communication is a great benefit for many people.

4. Right in the app I scheduled a phone session for the next week with Jorge. Note: One-on-one BetterHelp therapy appointments are for 30 minutes.

Can BetterHelp therapists diagnose?

BetterHelp therapists can diagnose many conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma disorders, bipolar disorder, narcissistic and borderline personality disorders.

All therapists who work through BetterHelp are licensed and certified by their stateโ€™s board, which means they undergo the same rigorous standards of any other mental health professional.

Can BetterHelp therapists prescribe medication?

Like most online therapy companies, as well as therapists who are not medical doctors, BetterHelp does not prescribe medication, which is typically provided by a medical doctor, or psychiatrist.

Does BetterHelp have same-day psychiatry appointments?

BetterHelp therapists are not medical doctors and otherwise do not offer psychiatric care or prescription writing services. Seek the care of a local psychiatrist, or, if you are in crisis, call 911 or go to your local emergency room.

How much does BetterHelp cost?

Online therapy with BetterHelp starts at $65/week. There is an additional 20% discount for the first month for new members.

All BetterHelp prices include weekly live sessions (other online counseling services charge a premium for live counseling), and unlimited messaging.

Example of Betterhelp vs. traditional therapy.

How much does BetterHelp cost per month?

With the 20% discount, a one-month commitment starts at $208 per month, which includes weekly live sessions โ€” plus unlimited messaging with your therapist between sessions.

Traditional, in-person, face-to-face therapy costs $100 to $200 or more per session without insurance.

If you canโ€™t afford to pay for BetterHelp, financial aid is available. Answering a few questions about employment status, income, and number of dependents may net you a discount on the regular price โ€” no discount code required.

Does BetterHelp offer a free trial?

BetterHelp does not offer a free trial, though they do offer financial assistance, and a 20% discount for new members.

One of the things I like best about BetterHelp is the ability to quickly and easily change counselors, so if your therapist is not a fit, it is easy and free to switch to a new one.

BetterHelp promo code: Does BetterHelp offer any discount codes?

BetterHelp offers new clients a 20% discount โ€” no discount or coupon code needed! They also offer financial aid for those who qualify โ€” not to mention the unlimited texting that is included.

This really stands out amongst the online therapy and counseling platforms. Go to Betterhelp.com/emmajohnson to get the discount automatically.

You can also apply for Betterhelp's financial aid.

Can't afford a therapist right now? Here are workbooks you could try to DIY:

Is BetterHelp covered by insurance?

Some insurance plans will cover online therapy, although BetterHelpโ€™s website states their services arenโ€™t covered by insurance.

Even if you have health care coverage, paying out-of-pocket for online therapy is likely less expensive than paying co-pays for traditional therapy via an insurer.

Is BetterHelp worth the money?

In my experience, after a few live sessions with my therapist, I have been very satisfied with BetterHelp. The quality of the therapist is remarkable and he has given me both the insights to understand my feelings and behavior, as well as some concrete steps to take to make my relationships better.

I really appreciate the quality of technology for both BetterHelp's website and app โ€” they are easy-to-use, look great, and make finding information, payments, and changes to my account straightforward.

As for the effectiveness of BetterHelp, it is fair to apply all the research that concludes that counseling helps people, as my experience with online counseling is so similar to face-to-face sessions.

There is a study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, found that online therapy is just as effective as in-person traditional counseling:

University of California online therapy study.

The question is not whether BetterHelp or other online therapy sites are “worth it” โ€” but rather whether counseling and mental health services overall are worth it.

As troves of research has found, the answer is: yes.

A recent study published in Translational Psychiatry found that not only does cognitive behavioral therapy change a client's life, it changes their brain. A Forbes journalist summarized it like this:

The study in Translational Psychiatry, suggests that people who have cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have measurable changes in the way certain regions of the brain are connected. Given what we already know, this isnโ€™t so surprising in and of itself, but the results are noteworthy because the participants had more serious mental health issues than are usually the subject of CBT studies. This is the latest in a growing body of evidence suggesting that talk therapy not only has significant and lasting effects on mental health, but that these changes can actually be measured in the brain.

With the help of cognitive behavioral therapy, your counselor can help you retrain your emotional responses to people, situations, and events. This method can deliver the quickest results, and you may even notice a difference right away.

The value of online therapy sites like BetterHelp is that it is very convenient, affordable, anonymous, secure and takes away all the challenges that can stand between a person and the counseling they need.

BetterHelp cancellation and refund policy

You can cancel your BetterHelp subscription at any time.

Reputable therapists never guarantee any results, and BetterHelp is no exception. However, if there are customer service issues: this is BetterHelp's policy, per the website:

We will evaluate your issue on a case-by-case basis and, at our discretion, take steps to resolve any issue, including but not limited to helping you find a new Counselor, extending your subscription at no cost to you, and issuing partial or full refunds when applicable.

Again, even the very first email from BetterHelp highlighted a link to cancel my subscription. The site makes it easy and straightforward to get what you need โ€” including cancelations.

BetterHelp vs. Talkspace

BetterHelp's top competitor is Talkspace. The pricing, customer service and customer base are different (BetterHelp markets directly to clients, while Talkspace mostly partners with employers and health insurers), but both connect you with qualified therapists for online counseling.

Not all online therapy platforms are equal. While most use cognitive behavior therapy online as the primary method of treatment, the intake process, services, and pricing options can vary.

BetterHelp vs. Talkspace: What has better pricing?

When considering BetterHelp vs. Talkspace, the cost for both is well below traditional, in-person counseling, but BetterHelp pricing is lower, with prices starting at $65 per week with one-on-one sessions included, while TalkSpace pricing starts at $69 per week, but you have to upgrade to benefit from phone or video sessions.

Side-by-side price comparisons of these two competitors:

Talkspace Basic plan costs $69 per week and includes text support and weekly live sessions.
BetterHelpStarting at $65 per week for unlimited messaging and weekly live sessions, or $260- $400 monthly. Financial aid available.
Traditional face-to-face couples counseling$65-350+/hour

Plus, BetterHelp offers new clients 20% off, as well as financial assistance if you cannot afford to pay BetterHelp's prices.

Talkspace offers unlimited text messaging as well, although the number of responses from your therapist depends on which plan you purchase. If you want to add video or phone sessions, you may pay more for those features.

The option to choose among different pricing structures can make online therapy more affordable for some, but you should make sure youโ€™re making an apples-to-apples comparison between the two programs.

Betterhelp vs. Talkspace: Which accepts insurance?

Talkspace works with a number of health insurers and employers โ€” call your carrier to see if they work with Talkspace.

BetterHelp only works directly with users โ€” you. BetterHelp does not work with insurers.

BetterHelp vs. Talkspace: Which offers a sliding fee scale?

BetterHelp offers financial assistance to those who cannot afford online therapy. Talkspace does not mention any financial assistance on its site.

Coffee Meets Bagel is a dating app that I always thought had a lot of potential. The cutesy-named dating app launched in 2012, positioning itself as the โ€œanti-Tinder,โ€ designed to help people make meaingful, lasting connections.

Coffee Meets Bagel was created by three sisters and relied on social media and an algorithm to pair โ€œcoffeesโ€ with โ€œbagels.โ€ The founders of Coffee Meets Bagel even appeared on Shark Tank (they famously walked away from $30 million, one of the biggest deals in Shark Tank history) and later raised $23.2 million.

Check out a clip of their Shark Tank appearance here:

There was a moment when I loved Coffee Meets Bagel and used it regularly. Back when dating apps were all about swiping, it did stand out, thanks to its use of prompts and the small daily selection of profiles.

But Coffee Meets Bagel never really caught on the same way that Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble did. From my own experience, thereโ€™s not a lot of activity and engagement on the app, which doesnโ€™t make it a winning dating app. However, the free version can make Coffee Meets Bagel worth a try.

If youโ€™re looking for a more active dating community for serious dating, there are other apps.

Here are our top three dating app recommendations:

– No long sign-up process
– Easy, swipe-based matching

How does Coffee Meets Bagel work?

Creating a Coffee Meets Bagel profile is pretty much the same as other dating apps: add photos, fill out basic details about yourself (age, location, job title, etc.), and then youโ€™re presented with different prompts to choose from. Examples include:

โ€œI am…โ€

โ€œWhat never fails to make you laughโ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s your love language?โ€

Coffee Meets Bagel recommends filling out at least three to make your profile more robust. The app also uses selfie phots and request for identification documents for proof of identity. Lastly, you are awarded free โ€œbeansโ€ to start. Beans are used as currency; you can use them to โ€œlikeโ€ profiles on your discover page and to extend matches and conversations beyond the one-week window.

There are three ways to interact with profiles:

Daily Suggestions

Every day at noon, Coffee Meets Bagel gives you several suggested โ€œbagelsโ€ to match with. In my experience, Iโ€™ve gotten as few as three daily suggestions to as many as eight per day. These matches are supposed to be curated using an algorithm that takes into consideration your preferences and previous likes, but I didnโ€™t find them personal at all. Some I noticed were repeats of who I saw in the discover page. Others I saw in other dating apps. And some didnโ€™t live within the five-mile radius that I set up.

Discover page

Coffee Meets Bagelโ€™s โ€œDiscoverโ€ page allows you to explore other potential bagels that donโ€™t necessarily fit your criteria. You can use the search function to filter profiles based on location, ethnicity, etc.

Likes You

This Coffee Meets Bagel page features profiles of people who already like you. You can get one profile view a day, but youโ€™ll need to upgrade to premium to see the rest.

Personally, I didnโ€™t feel like my matches were curated at all (but letโ€™s face it, when are they ever on dating apps?). While Iโ€™m sure these bagels are nice people, I normally donโ€™t buy into the algorithm BS and think that these same guys are being shown to everyone else. Iโ€™ve noticed a few profiles appear on my daily suggestions that I already saw on my Discover page.

Once you match with someone, you have one week to chat with them until the match expires.

What age group is on Coffee Meets Bagel?

I set my age range from 21 to 40 to get a good idea of who's using the app. While I did see some profiles from 40-year old guys and some from 23-year old guys, the majority of the profiles I saw were in their mid-to-late 20s or late 30s.

How much does Coffee Meets Bagel cost?

Coffee Meets Bagel is free to use, but they offer two membership payment options: Premium and Mini.

Premium:

  • 1 week for $16.99
  • 1 month for $34.99
  • 3 months for $74.99
  • 6 months for $119.99

Here's you get with a premium membership:

  • Unlimited likes
  • Unblur your likes
  • 8 discover likes a month
  • Premium preferences to help filter out matches
  • 3 boosts per month where youโ€™ll get 5x more views
  • Unlimited skip the line (meaning your profile will always be front and center)
  • Unlimited rewinds
  • Activity reports from Coffee Meets Bagel labs
  • Read receipts

Mini:

  • 1 month for $14.99
  • 3 months for $29.99
  • 6 months for $49.99

With a mini membership, you get:

  • Unlimited likes
  • Premium preferences to help filter out matches
  • 3 boosts per month
  • Unlimited skip the line
  • Unlimited rewinds
  • Activity reports
  • Read receipts

If you donโ€™t want to upgrade to the premium package, you can also purchase additional beans to use throughout the app:

  • $24.99 for 3,000 beans
  • $23.99 for 2,000 beans
  • $1.99 for 100 beans

You can get free beans by liking Coffee Meets Bagelโ€™s social handles and through referral links.

Can you use Coffee Meets Bagel for free?

Yes, you can use Coffee Meets Bagel for free (and I strongly recommend it). While the appโ€™s free version is very basic (only allows you to like and message other profiles for free), thatโ€™s all you really need from a dating app.

Is Coffee Meets Bagel a good dating site? Pros and cons

Yes, Coffee Meets Bagel is a good dating site. Is it the best dating site? Personally, I donโ€™t think so.

Our Coffee Meets Bagel ratings:
  • Member's experience
  • Matches
  • Cost
  • Customer service
2.8

Below are my pros and cons to Coffee Meets Bagel:

Pros

CMB offers a small selection of matches.

The limited number of suggested matches makes it easy not to fall down a swiping rabbit hole. Thatโ€™s great for people who are really busy or get overwhelmed easily on dating apps.

Detailed prompts.

CMB prompts encourage you to be detailed in your responses, and I like any dating app that makes you fill out prompts. It helps you find things to talk about with your matches beyond the generic โ€œHey, what's up?โ€

Longer chat window.

Chats are active for a week โ€” enough time for a quick banter before scheduling your first date.

Cons

App skews more female.

Coffee Meets Bagel has way more female users than males. This makes sense given that it was created by women who had poor experiences on Tinder. I even noticed that they were running out of profiles to show me.

Itโ€™s a very basic app.

Other dating apps like OkCupid, Tinder, and Bumble are constantly finding new ways for people to interact and engage with their products, but the Coffee Meets Bagel app is pretty much the same as it was when it first launched.

It has a weak algorithm.

Compared to the dating apps with more sophisticated algorithms, such as eharmony and OkCupid, Coffee Meets Bagelโ€™s algorithm doesnโ€™t cut it.

I was specific about wanting to match with guys within 5 miles from Brooklyn, and I got people from Jersey City or the Bronx (not within 5 miles). It tells me that there arenโ€™t a lot of people using Coffee Meets Bagel (and I live in NYC).

Coffee Meets Bagel reviews

Like most dating apps, Coffee Meets Bagel is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau. It currently has a F rating with complaints from people who got banned from the app. It has a 1.3 rating on Trustpilot and tons of reviews with complaints about getting swindled and scammed.

There were also lots of complaints from people who were disappointed about their matches. One reviewer noticed she was getting inactive profiles after she saw a profile of a guy who she knew recently got engaged. Others complain about the lack of attractive people on the app. Of course, that will all depend on where you live (and whom you find attractive).

Coffee Meets Bagel reviews on Reddit

Coffee Meets Bagel has an entire subreddit. Most discussions are about the appโ€™s glitchiness and asking for dating advice. This discussion actually talks positively about Coffee Meets Bagel:

Looking for old chats?
byu/msrobinsparkles incoffeemeetsbagel

One Redditor met their fiancรฉ on the app, and another says they get more matches on Coffee Meets Bagel than other dating sites. It proves that the dating app experience varies depending on the person, age, and location.

Is Coffee Meets Bagel worth paying for?

No, I donโ€™t think Coffee Meets Bagel is worth paying for. For me, Coffee Meets Bagel has all the makings of a promising dating app, but there arenโ€™t enough people on the app to make it worth the money.

Iโ€™m from NYC, and I noticed a lot of profiles that I saw on other dating apps. If you live in a big city, thereโ€™s no harm in trying it. But I donโ€™t think youโ€™re missing out.

If youโ€™re looking to find a long-term relationship, eharmony is our top choice for online dating because:

  • A BBB rating
  • 10 million active users
  • History of successful relationships and marriages
  • Very low divorce rate
  • Free basic plan
  • Each profile vetted to prove they are a real person and not married

What age group is on Coffee Meets Bagel?

The majority of the profiles I saw were in their mid-to-late 20s or late 30s.

How much does Coffee Meets Bagel cost?

Coffee Meets Bagel is free to use, but they offer a paid premium version, which is $119.99 for six months, $74.99 for 3 months, $34.99 for one month, and $16.99 for one week.

Is Coffee Meets Bagel worth paying for?

No, I donโ€™t think Coffee Meets Bagel is worth paying for. For me, there arenโ€™t enough people on the app to make it worth the money.

Childcare certifications

There are several certifications for child care providers offered by different credentialing organizations.

Child Development Associate (CDA)

The CDA Certification is administered by the Council for Professional Recognition, a widely recognized national credentialing program in early childhood education.

Why should I get a CDA certificate?

The Council for Professional Recognition can help you stay up-to-date with industry best practices and advance your career.

You can choose from four pathways to certification:

  • Infant/Toddler: For child care professionals in a state-approved child development center working with children from birth to 3 years old
  • Preschool: For child care professionals in a state-approved child development center working with children 3 to 5 years old
  • Family Child Care: For child care professionals in a family child care setting working with children from birth to 5 years old
  • Home Visitor: For child care professionals in a home setting working with children from birth to 5 years old

Requirements for CDA certification

You need a high school diploma or GED, or you must be enrolled as a high school junior or senior in an early education or child development career and technical program.

You also must complete 120 hours of professional education covering the eight CDA subject areas before you apply.

Within three years of applying, you have to register 480 hours working with young children, and within six months of applying, prepare a professional portfolio that meets the requirements outlined in the CDA Competency Standards Book

Once you meet the requirements, you can apply for certification from the Council online (for a $425 fee) or by mailing the paper application that comes with the CDA Competency Standards Book (for a $500 fee).

After the Council receives your application, theyโ€™ll review it and assign you a designated Professional Development (PD) Specialist who will visit your workplace. Theyโ€™ll observe you and assess your performance, then submit their evaluation.

Youโ€™ll also have to complete the in-person CDA exam, which includes 60 multiple choice questions and five scenario-based questions. After the exam, a committee will review your application and decide whether to award you with the CDA certification.

CDA certification is valid for three years. You can apply to renew your certification 90 days before it expires. It costs $125 to renew online or $150 to renew by mail.

Ups and downs aside, many marriages are simply unhappy.

How do you know whether yours โ€” or the marriage of someone you know โ€” is unhappy? If so, what can you do? Read on to hear what experts say about how to save a marriage, when to get divorced, as well as people who have fallen out of, and back into love.

What are the signs of an unhappy marriage?

What do you do when you are unhappy in your marriage?

Is it better to divorce than stay unhappily married?

What can I do to keep my marriage alive?

Bottom line: When to call it quits in a marriage

What are the signs of an unhappy marriage?

Here is what therapists, psychologists and relationship experts say about unhappy marriages and relationships:

5 signs of an unhappy marriage

โ€œWhen couples ask me whether it's time to call it quits in their relationship I let them know that that's a really personal decision, and the research on couples therapy suggests that the severity of the problem that couples bring to couples counseling doesn't predict whether that couple will stay together or part ways,โ€ says Heather Z. Lyons, PhD, a therapist based in Baltimore.

That said, couples' therapists have what is known as โ€œThe Four Horsemen of the Apocalypseโ€ that identifies married couples that are not just unhappy, but headed for a breakup:

  • Defensiveness
  • Attempts to shut down communication โ€” stonewalling
  • Contempt or looking down on your partner โ€” snarky mean comments, eye-rolling
  • Criticism โ€” seeing your partner's mistakes or annoying behaviors as character flaws rather than fixable problems.

โ€œCouples therapists can target these behaviors to help couples change them in an attempt to preserve their relationship,โ€ Lyons says. โ€œOr, when left untreated these behaviors will erode a relationship.โ€

Is fighting a sign of an unhappy marriage or a relationship red flag? Not necessarily, says Angela Amias, a licensed couples therapist located in Iowa City, Iowa. โ€œMost of us believe that fighting frequently is a sign your relationship is in trouble, and this can be true if fights happen in ways that cause harm to the relationship because one or both people are using tactics that hurt the other person,โ€ Amias says.

โ€œHowever, when couples avoid talking about difficult issues in the relationship, in an attempt to avoid fighting, the relationship starts to โ€˜dry upโ€™ and the couple can find themselves with less and less to say to each other, the spark in the relationship flickers out, and the relationship goes cold. People will often tell me theyโ€™ve fallen out of love.โ€

  2. Rachel Sommer, Ph.D., clinical sexologist, and co-founder of My Sex Toy Guide, shares this advice: โ€œThrough my years of practice, I have witnessed numerous couples work together to get the spark back in a broken relationship:โ€
    • Partners must spend some time away from each other, using this time to reflect on what they need from the relationship and, most importantly, the things that must be done differently moving forward.
    • Focus on spending more โ€˜sillyโ€™ time together. Both partners need to be vulnerable together and show their most authentic and pristine selves.
    • Be creative and com up with new ways to surprise each other and make the relationshi exciting, even more than before.

Should wives stay thin for their husbands?

Is it normal to be unhappy in marriage?

Dr. Fran Walfish, PhD, a Los Angeles based family and relationship psychotherapist and author of The Self-Aware Parent, says unhappiness in marriages is common and normal.

โ€œMany of us have strong uncomplimentary opinions and we sometimes, intentionally or not, communicate these thoughts and ideas to others,โ€ Walfish says. These messages, just like relationship styles, get handed down from generation after generation, so if you are a negative or critical person, know that your style and your messages will likely carry through to your partner (and children, grandchildren and beyond). Even the most kind, patient, and loving person slips into a negative statement once in a while.

What to do when your husband or wife says they're done

When to seek marriage counseling

Seek marriage counseling before you think you need it โ€” even before you are married!

โ€œCouples should seek therapy long before they think they need it. Many of the big issues started small and then grew in size due to them being ignored, overlooked and unresolved. Start early!โ€ says therapist Lynda Smith.

Is it better to divorce than stay unhappily married?

This is a very personal question that only you can answer, and of course you are still married so you do not know. I have met only a few people who say they regret their divorces, but some do. Some research suggests that unhappy couples become happy if they stick it out. A 2002 study found that two-thirds of unhappy adults who stayed together were happy five years later.

Should I try marriage counseling before divorce?

Yes, marriage and couples counseling can help unhappy relationships. โ€œIf one partner is not open to therapy then it is often best to separate or depart from the marriage,โ€ Smith says. โ€œBoth partners must be involved an on board. It may also take some strategizing based on the degree of toxicity. Obviously deciding to end your marriage is a personal decision. However, your marriage may be worth saving if both parties agree to put in the effort and implement therapeutic recommendations.โ€

The โ€˜Big 4โ€™ signs of a toxic marriage: When should you leave one?

Why stay married? What are the benefits?

There is plenty of research that shows that people who are married fare better in important ways vs those who are divorced or never-married:

  • Married people have 5x more sex than single people, according to the Indiana University researchers
  • Marriage makes people happier and that they continue to be more satisfied years into the marriage, according to a study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies โ€” though the gap in happiness between married and single people is small and not guaranteed
  • Studies find that married people tend to be healthier and live longer than those who are single, separated, divorced, or widowed, and have better mental health, fewer health conditions, and recover faster from illness. However, researchers not that healthy people tend to stay married (illness causes relationship stress), and most research is done in the United States, where insurance is more affordable for married people.
Note that research finds that people in โ€œvery happyโ€ marriages, vs. those who were โ€œnot too happyโ€ are twice as likely to report poor health and have much higher mortality rates.
  • Married people have more money than single people. This one is easy to understand: You share a single home, utilities, insurance benefits and even savings like renting a single hotel room vs separate ones on vacation add up to significant financial efficiencies for most couples. This leads to more wealth accumulation, more likelihood of having health insurance, qualifying for better mortgages and other loans, and make the financial part of life easier.
That said, disagreements over money is often cited as the No. 1 reason for divorce, so …

What can I do to keep my marriage alive? 5 tips for how to stay married

Walfish urges spouses to examine their early ideas about marriage and relationships, and focus on communication skills.

Dr. Walfish's marriage rules:

  1. Be aware of your own issues. Be accountable and own up to your part of the problem.
  2. Donโ€™t react immediately. Cool off first. Listen carefully without interrupting to understand what doesnโ€™t feel good to your partner and with genuine interest.
  3. If you have a complaint or criticism, present it like an oreo cookie couched between two positive statements so he will be more receptive and less defensive.
  4. Stick to the topic. Donโ€™t bring in a laundry list of complaints about things that happened 10 years ago.
  5. Use humor. Laughing can diffuse the intensity of an argument, keep perspective and help lighten up the moment.

Bottom line: When to call it quits in a marriage

โ€œMany women Iโ€™ve counseled cannot afford the legal fees to get a divorce. Itโ€™s sad. These women are stuck in unhappy and abusive relationships with no legal help. So, itโ€™s not as easy as an โ€œeither-orโ€ question,โ€ Crowson says.
