Best online divorce service in 2023 based on 18 online divorce reviews

We get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Here's more on how we make money.
The information contained on this page does not constitute an attorney-client relationship and is not intended to be a substitute for legal advice.

Filing your own divorce papers online or in your local courthouse will save you thousands of dollars, untold stress and drama, versus duking it out through divorce lawyers and court. A survey by divorce services firm Nolo found an average divorce lawyer hourly rate of $270, and average total bill per spouse at $11,300—not counting time for lost work, or other legal experts like custody evaluators or forensic accountants.

However, DIY divorce paperwork can be overwhelming. To help facilitate the process for an affordable rate, consider what many divorcing couples do, and opt for an online divorce service that provides printable divorce papers for your state, including detailed filing instructions for your county's courthouse.

You might also hire a mediator or attorney to hash out any lingering disagreements and look over the papers to make sure they are accurate. Some online divorce paper companies also offer services to have a qualified expert file the papers on your behalf.

We looked into more than 30 online divorce paper services and reviewed 18 of the better options out there based on the following criteria:

  • Reviews from third-party organizations like Better Business Bureau, as well as customer reviews from TrustPilot and Yelp
  • Speed from purchase to completed papers
  • Price, value and transparency (no hidden fees, for example)
  • Customer service, including whether a live agent is available, whether the service is available by phone, chat and email, and whether there is a wide range of hours available
  • Services like filing, live attorney or mediation consulting, etc…

While we can’t provide legal advice, we can say that based on these criteria, 3 Step Divorce is our journalists' top pick for best online divorce service overall.

Before signing on with an online divorce service, ask:

  • Do you operate in my state?
  • Do you offer consultation with a divorce lawyer?
  • Is that included in the initial fee — or extra?
  • Is that consultation by phone or email?
  • How quickly can I expect a response?
  • Will you file my divorce papers for me?

Also, seek out independent reviews for online divorce services (keep reading!).

Quickest service: Rocket Lawyer

In my experience, Rocket Lawyer had the shortest questionnaire and the fastest turnaround. As long as you have all of the information you need in front of you, you can fill out Rocket Lawyer’s divorce papers form in about 15 minutes.

Upon completion, you can immediately review, download, and print your completed divorce papers.

Reviews of other online divorce services

Divorce Forms Filler: Online divorce review

Divorcefiller.com claims to have helped more than 10,000 people complete their divorce forms.

Divorce Forms Filler pros

  • Site claims in multiple places to have a one-time fee with no hidden costs, but upon checkout, there is a note that you will be charged $39.99 to continue accessing your account after 30 days
  • There are several typos and incorrect language on their site, which makes me wary to trust their services (Ex: “Online divorce as the service in the media” and “over ten thousands of couples”)
  • No transparent security information on site (Security policy states: “You are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone.”)

Divorce Forms Filler cost

  • Answer questions at your own pace (though DivorceNet says the process should take less than an hour)

DivorceNet cost

  • $159 with a court-approval guarantee
  • $229 Premium divorce papers package, which includes will services, name change documents, and unlimited live customer support
  • $399 Premium Plus package, which includes everything in Premium, plus DivorceNet will file your forms with the courthouse on your behalf and deliver all necessary divorce documents to your spouse

Ready Divorce Service review

Ready Divorce Service has a C+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (not accredited) and is the parent company of these online divorce providers:

All these sites are very basic, with average (or no) online ratings.

Wevorce: Online divorce review

While most online divorce services focus on the divorce papers and helping you file them, Wevorce is closer to a mediation or collaborative divorce service, giving you access to three hours of live consultation with trained divorce mediators each month, as well as more involved online technology to help you and your spouse work toward a resolution.

Plus, Wevorce completes the divorce papers for you. Wevorce claims success in keeping 99% of its clients out of court.

Sound good? It is, but is many times more expensive than any other online divorce program. Divorce negotiations can last a few months, or more than a year in some cases.

Wevorce pros

  • Free 7-day trial to speak with a private judge before committing (no credit card required)
  • Good hybrid of online service, plus live mediator support
  • While more expensive than other online divorce services, it is a good value if you have a more complicated divorce case
  • Fills out the divorce papers for you
  • Featured in Forbes, People, Business Insider and on Good Morning America
  • Access to ebooks and hundreds of coaching videos

Wevorce cons

More expensive than its other online services, but cheaper than IRL options. You have to work together with your soon-to-be ex to complete the mediation process — which is not for everyone.

How to negotiate with a narcissist — and win

Wevorce cost

  • 7-day free trial allows you to:
    • Try the software
    • Meet with a private judge
    • Get parenting plan and settlement agreements
    • No credit card required
  • $3,450 for a private judge (no kids)
  • $5,850 for a private judge (with kids)

Online divorce service FAQs

Not sure how online divorce services work? Keep reading to find out:

How does online divorce work?

Most online divorce services use an online questionnaire to fill in divorce papers on your behalf. This is the typical process:

  1. Ask you initial questions to determine eligibility, like where you live, whether you know the location of your spouse, and whether you and your spouse agree on how to divide property/debt, raise your kids, etc. Not every divorce service is available in every state, and some may not work with you if you aren’t in agreement with your spouse before you fill out your forms.
  2. Some sites will have you answer more questions before submitting payment to receive your divorce forms, while others will ask for payment upfront before you can complete a questionnaire.
  3. Once you’ve completed a questionnaire, some sites instantly generate your divorce papers for digital download or mailing, while others take a few business days to review/process before sending them to you.
  4. Most sites allow you to review and edit if necessary any information you’d like to change on your forms.
  5. Once your forms are accurate, you and your spouse will sign the forms (may have to be notarized depending on your state) and file them with your local court.

Is online divorce easy?

Yes. As long as you have all of the information you need to file for divorce and you and your spouse are generally in agreement about how to set the terms of your divorce, online divorce can save you a lot of time, stress, and money.

Some online divorce service questionnaires can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.

Can I get a divorce online for free?

Rocket Lawyer offers a 7-day free trial that allows you to fill out its online divorce questionnaire and download your divorce papers. As long as you review and download your forms then cancel your account before the end of the 7 days, you don’t have to pay to use them.

However, most courts charge between $100 to $500 to file your paperwork, unless you seek an exemption based on financial need.

Bottom line: Based on our online divorce reviews, go with 3StepDivorce

While there are several quality online divorce paper services, 3StepDivorce is our No. 1 recommendation:

  • Better Business Bureau rating of A+
  • 24/7 phone and online customer support
  • 100% guarantee the papers will be accepted by your local court

Get started with 3StepDivorce for $84 >>

What is the best online divorce service?

There are many online divorce services. Before you sign with an online divorce service, make sure the company has: a high Better Business Bureau rating, a money-back guarantee, fees, customer ratings, and you're clear about the support or instructions are provided for filing. We chose Divorce.com as the best because it meets all the criteria.

How do online divorces work?

Typically, either you, or an online divorce service, will download and prepare the documents according to your state guidelines. But before that, there must be a discussion, typically several discussions, between you and your ex-husband or ex-wife to discuss and agree upon many points of the end of the marriage. These agreements are then summarized in a settlement agreement, and filed with the court.

Is online divorce easy?

Yes. Getting a traditional divorce with lawyers is time-consuming, stressful and expensive. Filing yourself, online, amiably, can save money, time, conflict, heartache, and drama.

This is helpful but seems more like an ad for CompleteCase . Low cost is focused on, not the risks. Saving money is important, but while people spend thousands on weddings, they expect to spend only $130 for a divorce that determines what property they get to keep, permanent custodial arrangements and visitation of children, child support, etc, and require many thousands in legal fees to try to fix. It’s best to get it right the first time.

CompleteCase has 68 complaints lodged against it with the BBB for clerical errors, poor customer service. They don’t store your documents forever – only 30 days. Then you have to pay for longer storage. They get 3/5 stars. It may be better than other online divorce sites, but most get poor reviews.

Online fill-in-the-blank sites are so cheap because they just provide readily available forms and instruct you on how to fill them out. They’re mainly document assembly programs. While they’ll instruct you to list all your assets, they won’t define assets, how to value them (e.g., if a person owns a business, that’s an asset – what’s the value?), what date to value it, how to divide them under the law, etc. They can’t. That’s legal advice. Much of the time, values aren’t even given in the documents. The property division may be completely lopsided without anyone knowing it. How do you figure out if it’s fair? Go to a lawyer. Fine, but then what’s the point of online site?

When it comes to completing parenting sections, the co-parenting cookie-cutter approach can lead to disaster for children if one parent is abusive or neglectful, lives too far away to co-parent, etc.

RocketLawyer and lawdepot are more fill-in-the-form. JustAnswer just lets you ask all the questions you need during the one week trial period. They won’t be answered. After that, you’re billed for a monthly membership based on the questions you’ve asked and information provided. There’s no set billing either. For RocketLawyer and JustAnswer, online question and answer is also only useful to get piecemeal information on limited topics.

At every turn, you acknowledge one should see a lawyer for advice, if there’s any complication or dispute, for legal advice, for further explanation, and to complete one of the many non-court forms that may be needed (e.g., order to divide a retirement, quit claim deed to transfer real property). That’s really important. But its important to point out the “average” divorce cost isn’t the same as the average cost for a no-fault divorce. It often runs about the same or less than the Wevorce fee, and may be flat fee.

Hi Emma,
My wife and I separated after 6 1/2 years of marriage. We were thinking of mediation to help us get a divorce, but since it is uncontested, there are no children involved, and no property issues between us–one of these diy divorce companies seems to be the way for us to go. I am thinking of 3 Step Divorce. I will send her the link to this page, and I hope she will also choose 3 Step. I like that it’s only $299 (plus associated legal fees) and that there is no time limit and a 24/7 helpline.
Does all that sound reasonable to you?
Thank you for providing this service,
John Wehrman
