How to sell jewelry

If you live in a large town or city, you may have a number of jewelers near you, online auctions, consignment or pawn shops you can ask about the value of your jewelry or watch, and go with the highest price.

But even then, you are limited to a handful of buyers. Here are instructions for all the common ways to sell jewelry.

Of all of these methods, you’re likely to get the most cash for jewelry by using an online jewelry buyer.

How to sell gold jewelry

Gold jewelry, unless it is a brand, is typically melted down for scrap, and sold at slightly above melt price for the price of gold that day. This post explains how to understand the value and price of your gold, as well as where to sell it for the highest price.

How to sell silver jewelry

Silver is far less valuable than gold, but it is also a precious commodity. Learn more about selling silver jewelry, silverware, and coins in our overview.

How to sell brand name jewelry

Worthy’s auction platform is the best place to sell brand name jewelry, which includes Tiffany, Cartier and more. See the prices for which Worthy recently sold jewelry here.

Bvlgari (also known as Bulgari) is one of the well-known jewelry designers in the world. The company’s rings, necklaces, brooches, watches, and other pieces often feature multiple diamonds and other valuable gems, with historical pieces from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s selling for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. As recently as 2017, Bvlgari Trombino rings have sold for more than $850,000, while more intricate pieces like necklaces have sold for amounts in the millions. Typical pieces sell for between $2,000 and $5,000 new. Bvlgari does not buy back their own jewelry, but you can likely sell your pieces to either a local jeweler or an online marketplace like Worthy.com. If you suspect that you have a rarer or historical piece, then an auction house may be a better option.

Cartier is considered by many to be one of the most luxurious brands, making their jewelry and watches highly coveted. Some of the most expensive Cartier pieces ever sold include the Sunrise Ruby Ring which sold for $25 million in 2015 and the La Peregrina Necklace valued at roughly $11.8 million. Prices for Cartier pieces will vary from design to design and depending on the metal and whether or not diamonds are included. Cartier does not buy back their jewelry, which means you’ll need to turn to a third-party buyer to sell your piece. An online jewelry auction house like Worthy.com will likely be your best bet, though you may also consider a local jeweler that you trust to give you a good price. Learn more about selling your Cartier jewelry and watches.

Chopard is a Swiss designer world-famous for their jewelry and watch designs. Among countless celebrities and business moguls, the brand even counts former Russian Tsar Nicholas II as a previous client. Some of the most expensive Chopard designs ever sold include a 201-carat watch which sold for $25 million. Depending on the piece, these watches can sell for anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. Very few designs sell for under five grand.

David Yurman has been crafting exquisite designer jewelry since 1980. The most expensive design ever created by the brand is the blue tourmaline and diamond necklace created by Evan Yurman, David Yurman’s son, which sold for $2 million. David Yurman does not buy back their own jewelry, though they do have a 45-day return policy. Personalized or custom designs are final sales. If you would like to sell a piece after the return period, you’ll need to turn to a private buyer such as a local jeweler or online auction. Learn more about selling David Yurman jewelry.

Harry Winston’s name is synonymous with extreme luxury. This King of Diamonds worked with some of the most famous gems in the world, and catered to the upper echelon of society. Harry Winston rings and necklaces regularly sell at auction houses such as Christie’s for millions of dollars. The simpler and more common Harry Winston pieces sell for tens of thousands of dollars. If you believe you have a Harry Winston piece, it’s important to have it appraised to ensure you get the most money when you sell. Learn more about selling Harry Winston jewelry.

Rolex is often called the most valuable watch brand in the world, due to the company’s history, brand awareness, and luxury status. Famous pieces have sold at auction for millions of dollars, including Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona which sold for $17.8 million in 2017. So-called “everyday” Rolex watches sell for anywhere from around $5,000 to more than $75,000. According to WristAdvisor, the average price for most Rolex watches is between $7,000 and $12,000. Rolex watches are known for retaining their value, making them fairly easy to resell. Learn more about selling a Rolex.

Tiffany & Co. is known for two things: Their little blue boxes and bags, and their exquisite diamond jewelry. Many women (and men!) dream of one day owning a piece of Tiffany jewelry. While Tiffany’s does not have a buyback program, they do have an upgrade program for engagement rings. Through that program, they’ll give you store credit up to the original purchase price of the ring which you can then use to buy a new engagement ring.

If you’re looking to get cash for your Tiffany jewelry instead of store credit, you’ll need to turn to a third-party such as an auction house or online marketplace. Learn more about selling your Tiffany jewelry here.

How to sell jewelry at a local jewelry store

A local jeweler you find “near me” may give you a fair value of your jewelry in cash on the spot.

Start your search by asking around for a reputable jeweler, and check Google, Yelp, and BBB ratings for a trustworthy buyer.

You can call ahead and make an appointment, or walk into a local jeweler to get an estimate or appraisal to understand the value of your jewelry, and ask them to make an offer. Get several offers before accepting the highest. You can also compare these offers against any offer or estimate you get from an online jewelry buyer.

How to sell jewelry at a local cash for gold store

If your old jewelry isn’t worth much as is, you might sell it as scrap gold or recycle it.  Typically, online and in-person gold buyers will take your broken jewelry, dental gold and other scrap — including online buyers like CashforGoldUSA.

How to sell or pawn jewelry at a pawn shop

Pawnbrokers are a decent option if you need quick cash for your gold, diamond or other jewelry or precious metals. Expect to get 30% of the retail value of your item, and make sure you do research on the current price of gold or silver, and get a couple estimates before you sell your jewelry at a pawnshop.

How to consign jewelry

Some higher-end consignment shops sell fine jewelry, as well as some online consignment shops like 1stDibs.com. However, popular online clothes consignment stores Poshmark and Mercari do not deal in fine jewelry.

How to sell jewelry online via a marketplace

Etsy, TheRealReal, Facebook Marketplace, ebay, among other online marketplaces where people and businesses sell their fine jewelry online.

I really appreciate you for publishing this blog here; it’s really a helpful and very useful for us. This is really appreciated that you have presented all data on places to sell jewelry online. I love all the information shared. Great article!

Your articles on this topic have been SO helpful. When I use the gold calculators I get an idea of what my stuff would be worth. Is there an average industry-wide percent the online buyers (like CashForGoldUSA) take that I should budget for? For instance, if my stuff values at $200 on the calculator, by how much should I expect their fees/commissions to reduce my offer?

Emma, you are amazing for being so knowledgeable and sharing great info. Also, very kind of you to financially help the ex take the kids to visit family. I’ve given the ex $1000’s to help get him out debt (even though I pay child support) so that he can take better care of the kids when they are with him but he and the kids (boy twins age 17) don’t appreciate. I never knew he was in the 25 years we were married. Oh well, I learned the hard and expensive way. I hope it’s good juju in the long run cause I’ve always heard the more you do to help others then you will receive. Not sure I believe that saying anymore but at least the kids and I have our health. Take care. Thank you again.

Hi Emma,

Very helpful info! What happens if I don’t accept the offer from cashforgold? Will they return the jewelry to me? Are any charges involved in that case?

Hello there, which site would you recommend for John Hardy jewelry? My mom died and she had a bunch of John Hardy. I have no idea how to value or where to sell it. Thanks for the help the above article was very helpful for some other items I have.

Hello, I would like to sell some Lone Ones, Leonard Kamhort jewelry, I bought these items in the late 90’s in LA. Some bracelets, necklaces and a wallet with an awesome chain attachment . I was wondering if you were interested or could recommend someone I could contact.

Greetings~ I have two beautiful vintage jewelry pieces from my mom’s collection. There is a diamond pear-shaped/platinum with 2 single diamonds with surround diamonds (appraised in 2018 for $19,000). I would send pics if there was a way?!? The other piece is a thick gold necklace with s afew small stones.

These have been in a vault since my mom’s passing ’07

Can you help on how to sell?
Thank you,
Dr. Fischer

This is a great comprehensive article for us divorced or divorcing women. Selling my ring was one of the first and best things I did to give me a boost to my bank account to help with the changes and costs that come with divorce. Of course, I had a family friend we had known for years that was able to help me. That is not the case for all women, this guide is very helpful.

I helped a friend out & bought her jewelry & art store now I have apx in retail 1.75 million in art, estate, & new jewelry & owe 225000 on it all. I have so much art , collectables & tons of new & estate jewelry & have no idea where to start to get rid of it all & pay my loan off. You have helped tremendously thank you. I just listed it thru I don’t now I do website as I don’t have to ship off 600 or so pieces of jewelry. Now without you even mentioning them I’m worried & will email Worthy I too am a single mom & feel like I’ve made a huge mistake & hurt my family by putting us in so much debt. You have given me some hope. God Bless you .

Hi Emma,

Thanks!!!!!! so much for this article – really appreciate. I’ve sold a lot of family jewelry with Heritage Auctions, and a couple of other jewelers, and done a ton of research in the last decade. Currently exploring selling a few last pieces, and considering Ebay with an experienced Ebay selling friend. Any input?

Again thank you so much for this,
Pam

I don’t like eBay because it is such a deep trove of both sellers and users – I prefer Worthy because you know exactly who is managing your jewelry (Worthy) and they manage the sale for you, give you a free GIA report, take professional photos (so hard to do with jewelry and gemstones) and then vet all the buyers before they are allowed to bid. So much easier, safer, more transparent ….

Hey Emma,

Really amazing research on places to sell your jewelry online. It’s inspiring for other existing online jewelry buyers and sellers to move on with great spirit. Thank you for being stand alone to support online jewelers.
