Since its beginnings in 1847 Paris, Cartier has created jewelry that’s tasteful, refined and sophisticated. King Edward VII called Cartier “the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers.”
The jewelry is expensive, no doubt about it — but Cartier jewelry holds its value. According to online consignment site The RealReal, and reported by National Jeweler magazine, Cartier holds the highest resale value of all high-end jewelry brands. Tieing with Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier jewelry sells for an average of 74% of the original price.
But like other fine jewelry, your Cartier ring, earrings, necklace or watch likely evoke strong emotions.
Maybe your grandparents gave you a Cartier necklace on your 16th birthday, or you inherited your grandmother’s 1940s-era Cartier earrings. Perhaps your first serious boyfriend surprised you with a LOVE bracelet one Christmas. Could be that your now ex-husband splurged on a Cartier engagement ring (and then kept telling everyone how much it cost). Now you're divorced.
However, if you no longer wear or enjoy your Cartier jewelry, it is best to cleanse your jewelry box, let go of those negative or complicated emotions, take the money and invest it in something positive and joyful — a house downpayment, a well-deserved vacation, going back to school, paying pay off debt, or buying yourself a new piece of jewelry that you will love and wear.
Why you should sell your used Cartier jewelry (including your Cartier LOVE Bracelet)
Sure, a lot of women would kill for a LOVE bracelet or a Tank watch, or even a simple Cartier necklace or earrings. Fine for them. But if the jewelry is no longer meaningful to you, there’s no reason to keep it. And since really there’s no such thing as a “simple” piece of Cartier jewelry, you stand to gain big-time by selling the unwanted jewelry.
It’s practical. Why hang on to jewelry (or anything, really) that isn’t making you happy? You can sell these pieces and use that money for an investment, vacation, pay off debt, go back to school, start a business, or help your kids go to college.
Maybe the Cartier jewelry simply isn’t your style these days (especially if it’s that engagement ring that your now-ex just couldn’t shut up about). Maybe you’ve decided to pare down your possessions and declutter your life.
Or maybe the jewelry is simply worth more to you sold. It doesn’t make sense to let thousands of dollars’ worth of value hide in a box on your dresser. Those dollars could be doing a lot more good in, say, your kid’s 529c plan or your retirement fund.
Readers of this site know that I’m all about making informed money decisions. If it’s time to sell your Cartier, here’s what you need to know.
Where to sell Cartier jewelry
First thing: Cartier does not buy back any jewelry, and Cartier does not do trade-ins. In fact, it won't even take returns if you've owned the item for more than 30 days (a small window in case she says ‘no').
However, you have several options for trading your Cartier for cash:
Sell Cartier at a pawn shop
The deal will be fast but the payoff will be dismal: On average, a pawn shop pays only about 13% of an item’s original purchase price.
Jewelry store near you
If you know and trust a jeweler, it won’t hurt to ask. You won’t get top dollar, though, because the store has to make money on the deal.
Sell at Sotheby's jewelry auction
Sotheby's, Christys and other big auction houses also help sell their Cartier and other fine jewelry through a consignment process. The problem is that you have to be close to one a large city like New York, London or Hong Kong to meet with Sotheby's in-person.
Plus, Sotheby's only holds jewelry sales a few times per year, unlike Worthy which holds auctions daily. Sotheby's and Christie's charges sellers upfront fees, including costs to grade and appraise your jewelry, photograph and list items on their websites. Worthy pays all costs to sell your Cartier or other jewelry — including giving sellers a free GIA lab report.
Online jewelry buyers
There are several quality places to sell your jewelry online, including WP Diamonds, Lyuria and Mondiamo, but by far the best is Worthy. You can read about my experience selling a diamond engagement ring online in my Worthy.com review, as well as in this video:
Keep in mind that the Cartier brand means your jewelry is likely worth more than the sum of its parts: A buyer at auction seeks history and elegance, rather than just the value of gemstones and metal. That's why this jewelry holds its value so consistently.
What you should know about Cartier
Since Cartier is a world-famous brand, the resale market is strong. Your jewelry’s rarity, current condition and the popularity of the style will determine its potential value.
A professional jeweler can give you a ballpark figure for the replacement value of that LOVE bracelet, Tank watch or other Cartier jewelry. Some will appraise for free; others will charge $50 to $150 per hour.
To get an accurate jewelry appraisal for your Cartier's resale value, though, you need a grading (also known as a lab report). You can’t get this at the neighborhood jeweler near you. Grading takes place at laboratories, such as the International Gemological Institute (IGI) or the International Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and includes details about the gemstones, metals and an estimated resale price based on the thousands of pieces of jewelry the laboratories see each year.
A lab report generally costs from $100 to $200. However, Worthy.com commissions a lab report for each piece it accepts – and it gives you a free copy of your lab report, even if you decide not to sell your jewelry after all.
How to sell Cartier jewelry
Back in 1969, the designer of the Cartier LOVE bracelet took his inspiration from the medieval chastity belt: The bracelet gets locked onto the wrist with a gold screwdriver. Styles range from a simple gold bangle with a couple of tiny diamonds to a white gold cuff with more than 200 of the gems. The price ranges widely, too, from $1,940 to $56,000.
Diamond LOVE bracelets tend to sell for more, but recently Worthy.com sold an 18k white gold design for nearly $3,000, and an 18k gold LOVE bracelet bangle with diamonds sold for $6,294.
Cartier rings have been around since the company began. Depending on its age, condition and singularity, your Cartier ring could bring a very decent sum. Recently a round-cut gold ring with numerous small diamonds (about 3.47 carats total) was auctioned for $8,694 at Worthy.com.
How much can I sell my Cartier ring for?
The sum that you can sell Cartier panther ring, Cartier LOVE ring or other style for depends on the going resale value. Some recent resale prices on a Worthy.com auction include:
$13,226: 1.53 ct. Round Cut Solitaire Cartier Ring, E, VS1
$5,200: 0.85 ct. Round Cut Solitaire Cartier Ring, D-E, VVS2-VS1
$1,770: 0.61 ct. Round Cut Solitaire Cartier Ring, G, VVS2
Where can I sell Cartier watches?
In 1917, Louis Cartier designed a watch line based on the Renault tanks that he’d seen in use during World War I. Now retailing from $2,400 to as much as $55,000, the Cartier Tank watch has become one of the highest-profile timepieces around, in both men’s and women’s versions. Both Jacqueline Onassis and Princess Diana had Tank watches, as do Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Anniston.
Another classic design, the Santos, predates the Tank watch. Louis Cartier created it in 1904, after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont said that pocket watches were hard to use in mid-air. The original Santos – the first men’s timepiece made by Cartier – morphed over the years and is now available in 23 varieties.
The Baignoire, a women’s watch introduced in 1912, is a greatly elongated oval shape, yet very slim and delicate. It’s still available today in plain metals or embellished with diamonds; one model sells for $162,000.
Speaking of diamonds: For some people, a timepiece is as much about flash as it is about telling time. Cartier makes diamond watches for men and women, in gold, silver, rhodium and other metals. Some designs use the stones as accents and some as major fashion statements.
As with other Cartier items, your best bet is likely to sell the watch at auction. A few recent Cartier sales from Worthy.com include $2,396 for a Santos, $2,553 for a Tank model and $5,197 for a Dumont. A specialty Cartier watch design called La Doña (inspired by the glamorous Mexican actress Maria Felix) recently sold for $11,070.
How to sell your Cartier jewelry online
I’ve sold jewelry on Worthy.com in the past, and can honestly say the process is simple, painless and profitable. You’ll save a lot of time and effort, and almost certainly get more money, if you work with Worthy to auction your Cartier jewelry vs. trying to sell it on your own. Here’s why:
Free jewelry appraisal
Your Cartier jewelry will be authenticated by a GIA lab report – which, again, is yours to keep even if you have a last-minute change of heart and decide not to sell just yet. The baubles will also be cleaned and professionally photographed, to give bidders the truest picture of what you’re offering.
Large number of verified jewelry buyers
When you sell to one of the other online jewelry buyers, or to a jeweler near you, you get one offer: Take it or leave it.
Worthy.com, however, is a jewelry marketplace where thousands of people around the world follow the auctions. All of them are verified buyers (mostly jewelers and wholesalers), which means that a lot of interested parties will see your jewelry. Worthy works only with serious bidders who are willing to pay what the Cartier brand is worth.
Worthy is safe
Worthy.com has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and is licensed by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. All jewelry is tracked and insured for up to $100,000 from the moment you send it off until the day it gets turned over to the highest bidder. In between, it's kept in a secure vault.
The selling process is pretty simple. Send a description and some photos to Worthy.com. The company will use that info to determine its potential value, and send you a FedEx label.
Ship off the jewelry – again, fully insured – and decide on the minimum price you’ll accept at auction. Worthy.com will take anywhere from 14% to 22% of the price, and send your share to you the same day via PayPal, check or bank transfer.
Bottom line: Best place to sell Cartier
Overall, the best place to sell used Cartier watch, Cartier LOVE Bracelet, earrings, diamond engagement ring, necklace or other Cartier jewelry is Worthy.
These buyers are motivated to pay what the item is really worth.
If your Cartier jewelry doesn’t serve you, then don’t let it take up any more room in your life. Find it a new home and use the income for improving your finances – or, maybe, for buying some new jewelry that’s a great fit for the woman you are today.
