Renting a new home usually requires a deposit of first and last month’s rent, plus a one-month security deposit. In some areas, it is impossible to find a rental without paying a broker’s fee of one month — bringing move-in costs to $10,000 or more.1

These upfront costs, plus application fees and moving expenses, can present a significant financial challenge — especially for low-income, first-time renters. However, we found dozens of government and community programs for those who qualify — and scams to avoid.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Single mom Darlene Mersereau told me: “I live in Massachusetts and our rental market is insane. Average rent for a two bedroom is $2,400 outside of the cities, and landlords typically require first, last and security. Additionally, it’s hard to find a rental without using a realtor — which is typically a full month’s rent. So for a 2 bedroom, it’s almost $10,000!

“The only way I’ve navigated this is by using my company bonus and pulling from savings or a 401K loan. When I get my security deposit returned, I try to pay down the 401K loan.”

If you don’t have any savings (or prefer not to blow it all on a deposit), keep reading:

First: Know security deposit laws in your state

Housing scams, especially in this age of housing shortages, are common. Do the deposit rules for your dream home sound fishy? Do your homework.

For example, most states limit the security deposit to two months, but in some cities, like San Diego, laws limit a security deposit to one month’s rent, as do the states of Alabama and Nebraska.

This article outlines security deposit laws for each state.

It is also helpful to be familiar with the federal Fair Housing Act,2 which allows landlords to charge higher deposits based on rental history (evictions, broken leases), pets and credit scores, but not for children and service animals.

Avoid housing scams

When people are desperate, a huckster is waiting to take advantage. When it comes to emergency housing situations, here are some common scams and predatory offers to keep an eye out for:

  • The property manager asks you to wire money or pay in an unusual way like cash or a gift card
  • The deposit violates the Fair Housing Act or laws in your state
  • High-interest loans cloaked as rental deposit assistance
  • Advertisements for no-deposit rentals, but then a bait-and-switch is revealed when a deposit is later required

Check out these charities and programs that help low-income and first-time renters:

Government programs

Some states, cities and counties still operate security deposit programs. They are typically run by local housing departments that oversee a specific area. These programs are often in place for homeless or low-income people and may provide a subsidy to cover up to one month’s rent.

In some areas, like San Diego County, Calif., security deposit assistance of up to two month’s rent is offered for a limited time to landlords as an incentive to start new leases with renters who participate in housing voucher programs.3

How to get help:

To find security deposit programs in your area, start with your local department of housing. The location of your housing department and the programs it oversees will vary by state, city, county or other locality.

If you aren't sure where to start, the United Way’s 211 is a great resource that can help you find housing departments, as well as active security deposit programs. Dial 211 on your smartphone or landline or visit 211.org.

The United Way helps people find community resources through its 211 service, which connects you to an expert who will help you find any available rental or security deposit assistance programs in your area.

When using the 211 website:

  1. Click on “Find a local 211”.
  2. Enter your address or zip code and click “Search”.
  3. Click “Search for resources online”.

This will take you to your local 211 search page, where you can type “rental deposit assistance” or “rent payment assistance” in the search term field. This will bring up a list of agencies in your area that may provide help.

How to get help:

  • Dial 211 from your phone or visit 211.org

Local churches and charities

Connect with local churches in your area to ask about help as a first-time, low-income renter. While not all churches have specific programs set up to help renters, some use donated funds to help people that need temporary support toward self-sufficiency.

For example, the Bel Air United Methodist Church in Maryland offers security deposit assistance to Harford County residents as part of its Pass It On Ministry.4

Sacred Heart Community Service offers emergency deposit assistance and first month’s rent for low-income Santa Clara County residents in California.5

How to get help:

Do a Google search to find local charities and nonprofits that help families in need or use sites like FindHelp.org.

If you are a member of a church, it’s a good idea to ask if your church offers help, but in many cases, membership is not necessary for one-time assistance. However, you may need to provide proof of need or enroll in church-led financial literacy courses.

How to get help:

  • Reach out to local churches
  • Search “churches near me” online

Churches and charities also often provide help for other housing-related expenses, like:

NACA housing programs

The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) is primarily known for its home ownership programs but also offers a rental housing program. The program offers housing counseling to low and moderate-income renters, which includes referrals to emergency housing, homeless prevention and social services.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a religious organization that has long provided housing assistance. Some branches have a rapid rehousing program that helps with the first month’s rent in emergency situations. Program availability is dependent on local resources and funding.

How to get help:

St. Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul is a faith-based organization that serves individuals and families with diverse needs. Local branches may offer one-time rent assistance.

How to get help:

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities provides affordable housing across the country and offers emergency and temporary housing aid. Some locations may offer assistance with your first month’s rent or a security deposit.

For example, if you have an eviction notice and need a new place to rent, the New York-based Fulton Montgomery Catholic Charities will pay the first month’s rent6 for applicants who have been denied help from the Department of Social Services.

Services vary by area, so contact your local Catholic Charities agency for specific details.

ERAP2

Did you know the U.S Department of the Treasury has an emergency rental assistance program? Known as ERAP1 and ERAP2, the ERAP1 program ended in December 2022, but ERAP2 is still active in some areas.

The Low Income Relief YouTube channel shared some insights on this program that helps eligible households that have trouble paying rent, utilities and other housing costs:

Keep in mind, these funds are available for emergency situations to cover past-due rent and utilities and are not an option if you don’t meet eligibility guidelines. Additionally, some states have exhausted their ERA2 funds.

To be eligible for ERA2:

  • You or a member of your household is qualified for unemployment benefits, or has experienced reduced income, or has significant costs, or is navigating a financial hardship that is due directly or indirectly to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • At least one person in your household is able to prove that they are at risk of homelessness or in an unstable housing situation
  • Your household is considered low-income if your income is below 80% of the HUD area median income guidelines7

How to get help:

No-deposit rentals

Some apartment communities and landlords may offer “no deposit” or “zero deposit” rentals. This could be from a rental promotion or it may be an option for well-qualified renters — those with excellent credit and a good tenant reputation verified by a former landlord.

You may also be able to avoid a deposit if you take over a current lease.

“If a renter has to leave their unit before their lease is up for whatever reason, they may need to find someone to take their place until the end of the lease,” Seamus Nally says. Nally is CEO of TurboTenant landlord software.

Nally says such opportunities are often posted on sites like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and classified ads in your local paper.

“If you can secure this kind of deal, that usually allows you to avoid having to pay a security deposit,” he says. “Just make sure that the landlord consents to you taking over the lease.”

In some cases, you may have to pay a security deposit once the lease is up, but you can verify that with the landlord and then save up to prepare for the upcoming expense.

That is the key when it comes to any type of rental agreement. Verify it with the landlord. Go to the actual property you wish to rent to meet the landlord or property manager in person. If you are moving from a different state and cannot visit the property, find a reputable real estate agent in the area who also handles rentals. This way, you can avoid scam artists.

While you're navigating the ins and outs of rental agreements and security deposits, it’s also wise to consider your long-term financial security. Many renters overlook the importance of insurance, but cheap renters insurance is an affordable way to protect your belongings in case of theft, fire, or other unexpected events. It’s a small cost that can provide significant peace of mind, especially when you’re managing other expenses like deposits and moving costs.

There are also resources to get help with moving expenses.

How to get help:

  • Google no deposit rentals near me and verify the information with the rental office or landlord
  • Look through classifieds or ask around to find options to take over an existing lease
  • Use a realtor to find zero deposit rentals

Pets are considered beloved members of the family and like any member of the family, their health and wellness are important — but expensive.

According to the American Kennel Club,1 some of the costs of owning a pet annually (in this case a dog) include:

  • Food – $120-$900 per year
  • Grooming – Up to $1,400 per year
  • Health services – $700-$1,500 per year
  • Toys and treats – $35-$250 per year

Let’s not forget about other things like boarding services, collars, crates, dog walkers, emergency vet fees, leashes, pet insurance, supplements and training — and carpet cleaning, sofa reupholstery, and other shenanigans-related costs.

As of 2024, the cost of owning a pet is on the rise. Rover.com, the world’s largest online marketplace for loving pet care, recently released its fifth iteration of the True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report for dogs and cats and found that annual costs for dog essentials ranges from $1,000 to $5,225 a year with a median monthly cost of $260.2,3

The costs of owning a pet are rising. But with Nutra Complete, a safe, affordable, and nutritious supplement, you can help support your pet’s daily wellness, immune function, and energy without breaking the bank. This freeze-dried dog food is packed with essential nutrients, helping to maintain overall health and vitality for your furry family member.

Many pet owners can go into debt because of their pets, which may lead them to decide against pet care altogether.

According to Marketwatch,4 nearly 33% of pet owners without pet insurance said they’ve avoided taking their pet to the vet to prevent a high bill, compared to just 22% of pet insurance holders.

Pet owners may even be tempted to abandon their pets at a shelter or turn to euthanasia. All of these stressors beg the question: How do you find a free veterinarian clinic or a free vet visit for your pet?

Whether you are searching for a low-cost vet, a free dog clinic, or a free cat clinic, here are some ideas on how you can find a free vet exam, including a free emergency vet visit, for your furry family members:

Where to get a free vet exam

Where to get free pet medications

Will pet insurance keep costs down?

Where to get a free vet exam

If you are interested in where to get a free vet exam, there are some organizations and programs that offer free or low-cost veterinary services. Some examples include local animal shelters, nonprofit shelters, and veterinary schools, many of which use a lower-cost pricing model.

Local animal shelters

Depending on where you live, some local animal shelters may offer free or low-cost veterinary services. However, each facility varies in what services they offer.

For example, the Tree House Humane Society in Chicago5 refers to itself as a Veterinary Wellness Center (VWC). While not a full vet clinic, they do offer limited services to dogs and cats, including exams, testing, neuter and spay surgeries, and vaccinations — the basics and essentials of vet care.

Lower pricing is available for those who need government assistance, while general public pricing is also available for all others. Again, this will vary by city, state, and shelter. Most animal shelters have locations and appointments that can be made online or over the phone.

Depending on the service, a deposit may be required upon booking an appointment. For example, the Tree House Humane Society requires a $10 deposit for vaccinations and $25 for neuter/spay surgeries. Emergency vet in Broomfield, CO is part of the UrgentVet national network that advertises it charges 40% less than tradtiional 24/7 urgent vet care.

Nonprofit clinics or shelters

If you are searching for a low-cost veterinarian, check out nonprofit clinics or shelters in your area. Pet Help Finder6 is powered by Open Door Veterinary Collective, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and helps pet owners find financially friendly pet resources, such as:

  • Boarding services
  • Pet food assistance including food pantry and supplies
  • Pet supplies
  • Spay and neuter clinics
  • Vaccines
  • Veterinary care and services

This can be especially helpful if you’re looking for essentials like dog food small breed options through local pet food assistance programs.

Simply go to the website and select from three categories: veterinary services, food pantry and supplies, or boarding and services. Then select your city, state, and zip code. From there, you will be able to select from a list of free veterinarian clinics near you to help you locate a low-cost vet.

If you need boarding services for your pet, there are less traditional options like Trusted Housesitters and Home Exchange, where people stay in your home to watch your pets while you travel.

Veterinary schools

Veterinary schools are usually less expensive than animal hospitals and clinics, since procedures are performed by students but supervised by a vet.

Veterinary colleges and schools may even have a veterinary teaching hospital on campus, like the University of Illinois,7 which provides services for cats, dogs, exotic animals, horses, and large animals.

Some institutions may offer free emergency vet services and emergency assistance programs. Check out the American Veterinary Medical Association's list of accredited veterinary colleges for a location near you.

Mobile vet clinics, pet stores, and vet clinics in less populated areas may be less expensive or offer a free vet exam or a low-cost vet visit.

Free spay and neuter clinics

If you are looking for a free vet exam or a free vet visit, you may also be wondering how you can find free spay or neuter clinics in your area. Organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offer low-cost spay and neuter programs in various cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Western North Carolina. You can visit their website to see if they offer a free vet near you or at least a low-cost veterinarian option.

Some places may even host free spay and neuter events. For example, the city of Chicago’s Animal Care and Control hosts a clinic twice a month from May to July that offers free spaying and neutering services, as well as various vaccinations and microchipping, for dogs and cats.

Some of these events will only service the first 100 dogs/cats to show up, so plan accordingly.

Major cities may also offer a list of low-cost spay and neuter clinics around town. Check your local government website to see what is available nearby.

Free dental clinics for pets

Taking care of those pearly whites is not only important for human members of the family, but for dogs and cats as well, and if you are looking for free dental care for pets, there may be some options.

Pet Dental Services9 (PDS) offers anesthesia-free dental care for dogs and cats under the supervision of licensed veterinarians throughout the country. With 100+ locations around the country, PDS is a quality option for quality care. Though services are not free, pet owners may be able to find some low-cost options.

You can also check the Animal Humane Society Veterinary Centers for low-cost dental services like dental cleanings and extractions.

Keep in mind when booking dental services that most clinics and organizations price teeth cleaning by the size and weight of your dog or cat. This is because smaller pets need less anesthesia (that is, if you need to book an appointment for a cleaning that requires anesthesia).

Dr. Bethany Hsia, DVM and co-founder of CodaPet, a network of licensed veterinarians that provides in-home pet euthanasia and cremation services, says that some local chapters of The Humane Society offer affordable dental care services for pets.

“In addition, some animal shelters partner with veterinarians to provide discounted or free dental care as part of their community outreach programs,” Hsia says.

Free emergency vet

Emergency vets can be hard to come by, let alone a free emergency vet. If you are unsure what qualifies as emergency veterinary care, you can always call your primary care vet to describe the symptoms your dog or cat is experiencing.

Some veterinary colleges, animal shelters, and community clinics offer emergency assistance programs for animals on a limited basis.

Emergency vet payment plans

Unfortunately, not all emergency vet hospitals offer payment plans, but some do. It simply depends on the individual practice and its guidelines, but if you need some assistance to help cover emergency vet bills, there are a few options:

  • Negotiate a payment plan with your veterinarian if available. Some veterinarians also work with third-party billing services, which allow you to pay over time.
  • For pet owners looking to also to support their dog's daily wellness, immune function and energy, supplements provide minerals and vitamins, especially if your budget restricts specialized diets or premium foods. Find out more about providing a complete range of essential nutrients for dogs with this comprehensive guide to the minerals and vitamins your dog needs.
  • Get a second opinion (if it’s not an emergency situation, of course). This may give you the option to work with a low-cost vet or one that offers payment plans.
  • Look for an animal shelter, community clinic, or veterinary college near you that offers discounted services for pets.

Dr. Hsia also suggests CareCredit, a credit card specifically designed for health care expenses, including veterinary care.

“It offers payment plans with low or no interest for a certain period,” she says.

Free vet services

You may be able to find the following free vet services at the locations mentioned above or by searching for free vet care in your area.

Vaccinations and routine check-ups

The American Animal Hospital Association8 (AAHA) recommends all dogs receive core vaccinations, which include:

  • +/- Parainfluenza
  • Adenovirus
  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Rabies

These vaccinations may be given on their own, like the rabies vaccine, or as a combination vaccine, where two or more vaccinations are covered in one shot. Some of these vaccines also require booster shots, usually every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine.

Puppies can usually begin getting vaccinated at 4-5 weeks old, but here is a vaccine recommendation schedule from the AAHA to see when your dog can start getting vaccinated.

Cats also need vaccinations. These include:

  • FCV (Feline calicivirus)
  • FHV-1 (Feline herpesvirus-1)
  • FPV (Feline panleukopenia)
  • FeLV (Feline leukemia)
  • Rabies

Kittens can usually start getting vaccinations around 4 weeks old, but you can use this lifestyle-based vaccine calculator to learn more about what your cat may need and at what age.

Low-cost pet euthanasia

As of 2024, U.S. News & World Report10 reports that euthanasia services usually begin around $50-$100, though the cost varies widely depending on the size of your dog, the facility you use, and where you live. These services can climb as high as $1,000 depending on the type of provider or service you use.

Dr. Hsia says emergency hospitals are the most expensive locations for euthanasia.

“Some low-cost options include local animal shelters, humane societies, and some veterinary schools. Some pet charities provide financial assistance for pet owners facing financial hardship to help cover the cost of euthanasia.”

If you are searching for the phrase “low-cost pet euthanasia near me,” there may be a few options.

For example, the Animal Humane Society11 offers end-of-life euthanasia for $90, while places like the Anti-Cruelty Organization of Chicago12 suggest a $50 donation for euthanasia services, which will be used to provide care to the animals in their shelter.

You can also ask local animal hospitals, clinics, or veterinarians if they offer low-cost pet euthanasia services.

Where to get free pet medications

Free pet medications can be hard to come by, though there are some low-cost pet medication options for your dog or cat. Websites like GoodRX offer pet prescription options where users can compare prices from local pharmacies, major online pet medication retailers, and other sources to help find the lowest prices for all your pet medication needs.

Another option is BuzzRx, a free prescription discount service that allows pet owners to save on pet prescriptions that can be filled at human pharmacies (e.g., Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, etc.). Users can download their card online or with their app, which can help users save up to 80% off prescription medications at 60K+ pharmacies nationwide.

Other companies, like 1-800-PetMeds and Chewy, offer online coupons where you can save on basic subscriptions like flea, heartworm, and tick medications.

If you need prescription help for the human members of your family, check out our post on free or cheap prescriptions.

Will pet insurance keep costs down?

Your entire family is most likely covered by health insurance, which begs the question, Do you need pet insurance, and who should consider pet insurance anyway?

One of the major pros of pet insurance is that it gives you financial protection over major vet bills — but not routine care. Think of things like a broken bone or a cancer diagnosis. If you do not have pet insurance, you will be responsible for paying for those vet visits out of pocket, and that can add up.

Pet insurance premiums depend on factors such as the age and breed of the pet, coverage limits, and deductibles. A typical pet insurance policy with a $100 deductible will require a monthly premium of $63.05, though deductibles can range from $200, $250, $500, and $1,000.

The average cost for monthly health insurance is around $15-$90 per month.

Pet insurance offers a range of annual limit options ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, while others may be $10,000 to $15,000, and yet still some companies offer unlimited coverage options. Keep in mind that the higher the annual limit, the more you will pay in monthly premiums.

Do some basic math to decide if insurance is worth it for you. As with any insurance, the house always wins, and you may end up paying more in premiums than you receive in benefits.

For example, if you have a pet insurance policy with a $500 deductible and your vet bill is $1,000, you will be responsible for the $500 while your pet insurance provider will pick up the remaining $500.

If pet insurance is $50 per month, you would pay $600 annually in premiums + a $500 deductible, or $1,100 before benefits kick in.

If your pet is young and healthy, it may make more sense to save $50 monthly towards future vet expenses, which may or may not be needed.

A couple years ago, I moved to a new state and was floored at how much it cost — the average quote for my two-story, three bedroom house was $3,000.

Instead of hiring movers, I ended up renting a one-way U-Haul for just under $500. The rest, I paid for in sweat.

According to Moving.com,1 a comparison site for movers and sister site of Realtor.com, the average cost of a local move is $1,250, while the average cost of a long-distance move is $4,890.

Low-cost and free movers

Unfortunately, if you’re looking to move for free, there aren’t legitimate options unless you are in an emergency situation like homelessness or violence. However, there are ways to find affordable movers and moving services:

Charities that help with moving

Moving assistance for seniors

Emergency relocation programs

How to cut moving costs

Common moving scams

Charities that help with moving expenses

If you meet certain income and other eligibility requirements, you may be able to get help from a charity organization with the cost of your move, especially if you are in a crisis (i.e. facing eviction or fleeing domestic violence).

Start by searching online for charities in your city or town, and contact them to ask if they offer moving assistance. You may be required to provide documents to verify your income and information about your move.

Here are some nationwide charities that may offer financial help with moving if you are navigating homelessness:

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a global, faith-based organization that offers services to people in need.

Regional locations offer different community programs based on what’s needed in a particular area. For example, the Salvation Army Housing Now program in the Denver metro area provides homeless families with up to $150 for moving expenses.2

All locations may not offer moving assistance, so you’ll have to contact your local Salvation Army or visit your local branch’s website to see what they offer, which may also include security deposit assistance.

YWCA USA

Some YWCA locations, like the one in Quincy, Ill., offer a Supportive Housing Program that provides one-time assistance with moving costs for individuals and families who are homeless.3

Contact your local YWCA to ask if there are options to help you with the cost of your move.

United Way 211

While the United Way does not directly provide money to help people move, they can connect you to resources in your community.

Dial 211 on your mobile or landline phone, or visit 211.org to ask about moving and financial assistance.

Churches

Churches and religious organizations often have programs and ministries to serve community needs. You can contact local churches and ask about one-time help with moving costs.

For example, Catholic Community Services of King County, Wash. offers move-in assistance once a year.10 Even if your church can’t offer financial help for your move, volunteers from your church community may be willing to offer you help in the form of unpaid labor.

Storage assistance

If you can’t find a home right away, some organizations will help you pay to store your belongings. For example, Coalition for the Homeless in New York City helps pay for storage for people living in a shelter.4

Moving assistance for senior citizens

Though services vary by region, your state Department of Aging is a great place to look for information on free or low-cost moving assistance for seniors.

On a local level, you can reach out to senior centers and county or city departments of aging. The Administration for Community Living (ACL) Eldercare Locator is a helpful tool to find services that help seniors.

Most programs will require that you meet eligibility guidelines in regards to age, income, and assets. For example:

  • Housing Opportunities & Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) in Chicago, Ill., offers free boxes and moving services on a sliding fee scale based on monthly income for seniors 62 and over (55 and over if disabled)5
  • The United Way of King County, Wash., has a Mighty Movers program staffed with volunteers to help seniors move6

You can also look into organizations like the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). AARP members can get a $250 discount on moving costs when they use Shyft moving services7 and up to 20% off Budget truck rentals.

If you decide to hire a moving company, ask if they offer a discount for seniors.

Crisis and emergency moving assistance

If you are in an emergency situation and need help moving because of a house fire, domestic violence situation, eviction, or natural disaster, these resources can help:

  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: This website provides resources to help you move from an abusive home, or you can call 800-799-SAFE
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): The FEMA Individuals and Households program provides financial assistance with moving and storage costs after a disaster
  • Emergency Solutions Grant: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has funding for its Homelessness Prevention program that offers financial assistance for moving costs through Continuum of Care programs
  • Nonprofits: Reach out to local nonprofits likeModest Needs,9 which offers a one-time grant of up to $1,000 to help low-income families handle an emergency situation like moving quickly from a home

Moving assistance for disabled

If you are disabled and need help moving, one of these organizations may be able to help or at least point you in the right direction:

  • The Disability Information and Access Line (DIAL) connects people with resources that support independent living. Call 888-677-1199 to ask about resources in your area.
  • Centers for Independent Living helps people with disabilities transition from nursing homes and other institutions to community-based residences.
  • Elderly Disabled Living (EDL) is a charity that offers financial help to low-income seniors and disabled persons to pay for utilities, health care, transportation, housing, and other expenses on a case-by-case basis. Moving assistance for veterans and disabled veterans

If you are a veteran or disabled veteran, here are some resources to find help with moving to a new home:

  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a Relocation Assistance Program for veterans transitioning out of the military that includes services to help you plan and budget your move
  • If you live in a rural area with six or less people per square mile, the Post-9/11 GI Bill offers a one-time payment for veterans, service member or qualified dependent children to move from that area to attend school
  • The National Resource Directory helps connects veterans and service members to resources that support transitioning to civilian life
  • The Wounded Warrior Project forms community partnerships to help wounded, injured, or ill veterans get the support they need. For example, Operation We Are Here offers multiple resources for military moves.

Also, reach out to military service and relief organizations to ask about moving assistance (some of them may require membership):

  • Army Emergency Relief: This is the Army’s nonprofit that provides financial help to soldiers and their families as they relocate
  • Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society: Offers Quick Assist interest-free loans of up to $1,000 for urgent financial needs
  • Air Force Aid Society: Provides emergency financial assistance for basic living expenses like gasoline and vehicle repairs which are helpful during a move
  • Coast Guard Mutual Assistance: Has a General Assistance program that provides help with moving expenses when a move is necessary for the overall health of the family
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars: Offers an Unmet Needs grant that provides up to $2,500 for expenses that you cannot pay due to financial hardship

More emergency fund resources

Emergency fund resources often require proof of financial hardship and can provide money to address immediate needs. There are also lots of ways to earn extra cash to build your moving fund.

Other relocation help, relocation assistance programs

Some businesses offer grants specifically for moving. For example, Move.org offers a $500 grant to people living in the U.S. who are planning to move in the next six months. The application is open in the summer and fall, based on availability.

If you are being displaced from your home by the government, you are entitled to relocation assistance under the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970. It’s important not to move until you receive communication about your rights and options from the government.

Your state human services agency may offer a relocation program. For example, Michigan’s MI Bridges program offers up to $1,040 in relocation funds based on household income and size.11

If you get a new job in another city or state, ask your employer about reimbursement for moving expenses.

If you are a member of a church, service organization, fraternity, or sorority, you may be able to get a need-based grant or find volunteers to help you move.

Typically, you’ll need to provide identification and proof of income and assets at a minimum to get help for a need-based grant.

How to cut moving costs

You’ll have to do a lot of digging to find resources or people who are willing to move you for free. However, if you can’t get the help you need for a free move, here are some tips for cutting costs:

  • Recruit friends and family: Bribe people with pizza and beverages to help you pack and move items from your home
  • Seek volunteers: Ask for help from volunteer organizations and churches in your community to see if you can get help moving small items for free
  • Start a GoFundMe page: You can tell your story (just like Heather, a single mom from Denver facing eviction) and get financial support from people who care by sharing your link on social media
  • Find an affordable moving solution: Opt for mobile storages or one-way truck rentals to cut costs
  • Membership perks: If you belong to AAA or warehouse clubs like Costco, ask about membership discounts on moving expenses
  • Freecycle: Use Freecycle.org to find free packing supplies like boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape
  • Use apps to sell stuff: Make extra money by using apps to sell items you no longer need
  • Move during off-peak times: The busiest time to move is May through September, so move during the off-season when moving companies are more likely to have specials and discount deals
  • Use what you have: Instead of buying packing materials like bubble wrap use what you have around the house, like newspapers, towels and linens to wrap fragile items
  • Ask stores about free boxes: Go to your local grocery and big box stores and ask if they are willing to give you unwanted boxes
  • Donate unwanted items: Cut down on what you have to take with you by donating furniture and other household goods to charity

Avoid predatory moving scammers

Arm yourself with knowledge on how to spot red flags to avoid predatory moving scammers, including:

  • Companies that quote you a low rate, then charge you more upon job completion or tack on additional fees
  • Companies that request a large down payment then don’t complete the job

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General (US DOT OIG), here are some red flags to watch for on a moving company’s website12:

  • No address or credentials: No web presence, physical address, or any information about their licensing, insurance, or registration as a business (such as a DOT number)
  • Sketchy business details: Company uses a generic email address or someone answers the phone with a “hello” instead of using the company name
  • Overly positive reviews: No matter how great the business, all reviews won't be five stars and glowing so read carefully and see if people sound genuine as some places hire people to make fake reviews or post their own
  • Unproven claims: Moving business claims to be in business for decades but you can’t find a web presence, reviews, or anything to prove such claims
  • No in-person inspection: The company agrees to move your belongings without seeing them in person (or using a video chat if you are in another state), yet gives you a verbal estimate instead of a written one
  • Pushy salesperson: Salesperson makes statements like “this price is only good for today” or contacts you daily to get you to commit to the hire and make a deposit
  • Poor communication: The moving company is hard to reach by email or phone or does not answer your questions
  • Credit not accepted: Mover will not take a credit card as a form of payment and only accepts cash, wire transfers, or money orders
  • Large deposit: The moving company asks for a large deposit or demands payment in full in advance of the move
  • Blank contract: A moving representative shows up on moving day with a blank contract to sign

The Better Business Bureau also offers tips for avoiding moving scams:

Better Business Bureau provides tips to avoid common moving scams

To make sure you’re choosing a reputable mover, check out these resources and third-party review sites:

  • Better Business Bureau (BBB): You can vet moving companies based on their BBB rating and consumer reviews
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA): Part of the DOT, the FMCSA has an in-depth online guide to help with your move, including a booklet you can download about your rights and responsibilities when you move
  • Independent consumer review sites: Sites like Trustpilot and Consumer Advocate give you a glimpse of what other people think of the mover
  • MovingScam.com: A site dedicated to finding reputable movers that includes reviews, forums, and a list of vetted movers
  • Friends and family: Ask your network who they have used in the past
  • Real estate agents: Your local real estate agent can likely refer you to reputable movers

Also, it’s a good idea to hire an actual moving company versus a moving broker. A moving broker doesn’t do any of the work, but rather hires a subcontractor to do the work. You may be charged extra fees just for involving a middle man.

Here’s what happened when one Reddit user hired a moving broker:

When parents break up — whether by divorce, or separation or even if they never were a couple — typically kids stay mostly with mom and spend part-time with dads. Often, physical custody is a painfully contentious and expensive legal battle.

In my new book The 50/5o Solution: The Surprisingly Simple Choice that Makes Moms, Dads, and Kids Happier and Healthier after a Split (Sourcebooks), I explain how studies find that kids do best when parenting schedules are equal. Moms also earn more, dads are happier and more involved — and there is a smaller gender gap in married couples.

In this post, we'll cover:

What surprised me most about 50/50 schedules

  1. Kids’ outcomes are the same as those who grow up with two married parents.
  2. Outcomes improve the closer to 50/50 the schedule is.
  3. Single dads are more engaged fathers in shared parenting schedules.
  4. Single moms with equal parenting earn more than those with sole or majority-time schedules.
  5. Communities where equal parenting is the norm experience lower rates of child abuse.
  6. 50/50 parenting laws are correlated with lower rates of domestic violence
  7. Equal parenting is correlated with lower conflict between the parents.
  8. Equal parenting benefits persist even when parents do not choose the schedule themselves.
  9. Equal parenting does not compromise either parent’s bond with the child.
  10. Equal parenting benefits apply to infants, babies and toddlers — including overnights.
  11. 50/50 laws for divorced families means more gender equality in married couples.

What surprised me most about 50/50 schedules

Happy co-parents loving their children, sharing parenting time 50/50

I spent more than eight years researching this topic, and my assumptions were challenged many times!

1. When parenting time is shared equally, kids’ outcomes are the same as those who grow up with two married parents.

Single dad hugging and playing with two young adoring daughters.

The closer the schedule is to 50/50, the better the kids fare in social, emotional, academic, and physical health outcomes — not just immediately but for the rest of their lives.

Researchers at University of Lausanne in Switzerland published in 2023 a meta-analysis of thirty-nine studies on shared parenting with a sample size of 1.5 million. They found that while children raised in nuclear families fared better than those in separated families, 75 percent of the time separated-family kids did just as well as those who grew up in homes with married biological mothers and fathers, but also much better than those raised by just one parent.

The Lausanne study factored in income and the presence of stepparents.

“Maintaining connection with both parents outweighs any potential drawbacks of moving between households and supports many countries’ policies around preference [shared-custody parenting] over [lone-custody parenting],” researchers concluded.

2. Child outcomes improve the closer to 50/50 the schedule is.

Learn about equal parenting.

Arizona State University child psychologist William Fabricius has been studying custody outcomes for three decades. “If a child from a divorced family has equal parenting time, they can have relationships with both their parents that are as good as those in intact families,” Fabricius said.

On the other hand, “If one parent is absent from the child’s life until every other weekend, for example, the child is at risk of thinking that that parent doesn’t really want to spend more time with me and…maybe I don’t matter that much to that parent.”

Even if there’s conflict, kids don’t have all those extra hours and hours away from Dad to worry that he is going to slip out. “We know from lots of research that these doubts set up chronic stress reactions that can damage long-term mental and physical health.”

3. Single dads are more engaged fathers in shared parenting schedules.

Middle aged black single dad helping his teen kids with homework.

This is easy to understand, but underscores the most powerful part of equal-parenting: Children benefit from the bonding that happens when they have significant time with their dads, know they have a home at both mom and dad's house, and deeply feel the security that neither parent will leave them.

More on why single dads are often better dads

4. Single moms with equal parenting earn more than those with sole or majority-time schedules.

Single professional mom doing work and hugging her kids.

In my survey of 2,270 single moms, 86 percent said they are not reaching their full earning potential. Of those moms, 30 percent said the key to earning more is increased childcare, and 22 percent said more child responsibility sharing with their child’s father would increase their income. A full 87 percent of single moms said that if their kids’ father took on more parenting time, they could earn more money, and 30 percent said they’d be happier.

Other highlights that shine on the money and co-parenting connection include:

A few survey highlights include:

  • Moms with a 50/50 parenting schedule are 54% more likely to earn at least $100,000 annually than moms whose kids are with them most of the time (with “visits” with the dad).
  • Moms with a 50/50 parenting schedule are more than three times (325%) more likely to earn $100,000 than single moms with 100% time with their kids.
  • Moms with 50/50 parenting schedules are more than twice as likely to earn $65,000+ than those with majority time, and nearly three-times as likely to earn that sum than moms with 100% parenting time.
  • 13%, or 1 in 8, single moms have a 50/50 arrangement — and 98% of them are content with it.
  • 51% of single moms surveyed have their children 100% of the time.
  • Equally shared parenting is popular with single moms: The majority of single moms, 53%, either already enjoy a 50/50 schedule or wish they had it.
  • 9 in 10 single moms say they could earn more money if they had more equality in their parenting time.
  • Moms with 50/50 parenting time are 34% more likely (23% vs. 15%) to say they feel “awesome and proud” of being a mom compared with moms who care for their kids 100% of the time.
  • About 70% of moms who have their kids 100% or majority time feel parenting gets in the way of self-care, vs just 50% of moms with 50/50 schedules.

5. Communities where equal parenting is the norm experience lower rates of child abuse.

Child abuse rates in Ohio counties with and without equal parenting norms.

National Parents Organization (NPO), the leading U.S. nonprofit advocating for equal parenting laws, assessed parenting guidelines in each of Ohio’s 88 counties for how likely they were to provide children with equal parenting time arrangements, giving them letter grades A through F.

NPO then compared these ratings against substantiated incidents of mental, physical, and sexual child abuse. Child abuse rates in counties that had an A or A-grade were half those with a D.

Researchers surmised that with less relationship conflict, less conflict spilled over to the kids in 50/50 communities. And “where two parents are equally engaged in rearing their children, neither is as likely to feel overburdened and stressed out by childcare responsibilities and both can serve as a watchful eye over the children’s well-being.”

6. 50/50 parenting laws are correlated with lower rates of domestic violence

Kentucky family court cases where domestic violence charges were filed, before and after equal parenting laws were passed.

In 2016, the Kentucky legislature passed the country’s first rebuttable presumption of equally shared parenting time when parents separate or divorce.

Since the law was enacted in 2017, Kentucky family court filings dropped by more than 16 percent despite the population increase within the state and the nationwide increase in divorce filings. Between 2017 and 2022, the number of domestic violence claims filed alongside family court filings fell by half.

7. Equal parenting is correlated with lower conflict between the parents.

Co-parents getting along, sharing parenting time equally with two young children.

When states pass laws requiring a presumption of 50/50 timesharing, the number of court filings decreases. Studies also find that when time is expected to be shared equally, and the legal system is not set up for parents to fight over days and hours of custody time, conflict goes down.

In Spain, after equal parenting laws were passed in 8 of the country's 17 regions, the divorce rate remained steady, but those breakups were less contentious, according to Daniel Fernández-Kranz, lead researcher on the study and head of the economics department at IE University Business School in Madrid.

“In regions where shared-parenting laws were passed, divorce proceedings now tend to end with voluntary agreement between the parties, ernández-Kranz told me. “That is something you'd expect because when parenting time is presumed equal, the power between the partners is more balanced, and there is more incentive to reach an agreement and no go to court and face an expensive procedure with an unforseeable end result.

8. Equal parenting benefits persist even when parents do not choose the schedule themselves.

Couple talking with psychotherapist about divorce and coparenting.

Doesn't 50/50 parenting only work for parents who already get along and chose an equal schedule? No, says the research. Even if a judge orders equal parenting or therapist strongly recommends it against a parent's wishes, this schedule still benefits the child, studies find.

9. Equal parenting does not compromise either parent’s bond with the child.

Worried single mom snuggles her baby.

If a child is deeply connected to a primary caregiver, and thens suddenly the child starts spending half his or her time with the other parent, doesn't that traumatize the kid? Isn't that relationship with the mother hurt?

No, studies find.

10. Equal parenting benefits apply to infants, babies and toddlers — including overnights.

Single dad co-sleeping with newborn baby.

Arizona State University child psychologist William Fabricius has found that more parenting time—including overnights—when kids are three years old and younger predicts a stronger, more secure father-child relationship without harming the mother-child connection.

This was true even when the overnights occurred when the child was still an infant and regardless of whether the parents had low amounts of conflict or high amounts. Most importantly, the results held true even when the court had to impose the overnights with dad despite the mother’s objections. Those brutal newborn nights of little sleep are how you learn about your child and how you learn how to take care of a child even when every fiber of your being longs for rest. And for the kid, “that’s how the child forms an attachment to that parent and starts to recognize this parent as a consistent caregiver,” Fabricius said.

Federal stats about single mothers in the United States and internationally.

11. 50/50 laws for divorced families means more gender equality in married couples.

Co-parents getting along, sharing parenting time equally with two young children.

Since 50/50 parenting presumptions were passed in 8 of Spain's 17 regions, gender equality in terms of work outside the home has increased when compared with communities where mothers still typically have primary care.

“We think that if mothers anticipate they might not have sole custody should she divorce, she may chose to stay in the workforce. Fathers might bond more with children knowing that in event of divorce he may retain joint-custody,” Daniel Fernández-Kranz said. “It changes the entire division of labor within household.”

If you want a smartwatch, don't fall for clickbait advertisements that promise a free device. Often, those types of ads are just trying to steal your personal data. And if you actually get a free smartwatch by mail, it may be loaded with malware.1

To get a discount on a legit smartwatch or health tech device, start with your health insurance provider. In some cases, your device might be covered 100%.

In this post, we’ll cover the best ways to get a free or affordable smartwatch or fitness tracker, help you avoid free smartwatch scams, and discuss the benefits of owning one. We’ll also cover free fitness tracking apps you can use without a smartwatch.

What health tech devices are covered by insurance?

Depending on your insurance provider and level of coverage, devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers may be covered, since they can measure health data factors like heart rate and sleep patterns — and studies show that people who use these features are more likely to exercise and enjoy the experience2 and gain early awareness of health issues such as heart disease and movement disorders.3

However, smartwatch benefits are not often promoted on insurer websites. Information on perks like free smartwatches is readily available to current members of an insurance plan, but hard to find when you are shopping around for coverage on your own. If you are employed, get in touch with your HR representative during open enrollment to get the inside scoop or contact customer service for the health plan that interests you.

For example, the Devoted Health Medicare Advantage Plan of Greater Houston will reimburse members up to $150 per year to purchase an Apple Watch or other health tech device.4

If you are at risk for certain health conditions, some insurance providers cover smartwatches or fitness trackers as an incentive to meet weight loss and other health goals. This is the case for people who enroll in the Lark Diabetes Prevention Program, which provides free Fitbit with participating insurance plans.5

To qualify for a free Fitbit with Lark, you’ll have to answer health questions to determine your level of risk for diabetes. Once accepted, you’ll have to be active in the program for 10 weeks and complete all activities to earn the Fitbit.

Keep in mind, providers may only authorize coverage for devices with FDA-cleared applications — those that accurately monitor or measure aspects of health like your heart rate or sleep patterns. The Apple Watch’s ECG app is an example of an FDA-cleared app.6

This news report talks about the benefits of having a smartwatch for your health:

Here’s a list of top health tech devices that may be covered in full or part by health insurance:

Apple Watch

Price range: $249-$1249+

Though the Apple Watch is one of the most expensive smartwatches you can buy, it also offers tons of features, including:

  • Activity monitoring: Monitor calorie burn, activity, and how many times you stood up and moved each hour. Your device can also track how your body responds to different types of exercise through metrics like heart rate elevation.
  • Heart monitoring: Get notifications about irregular heart activity or generate an electrocardiogram (ECG) you can send to your doctor.
  • Sleep tracking: The Apple Watch can report on the quality of your sleep throughout the night, track your body temperature, and work with a connected iPhone to set sleep reminders.
  • Emergency alerts: If you have been in a car accident or have fallen down, the watch can connect you with first responders and notify your emergency contacts.
  • Communication: With a paired iPhone, you can make calls, text, see notifications for appointments, check the weather, and monitor daily task lists. Even if your kids don’t have an iPhone, they can call or text you with their Apple Watch.
  • Device recovery: You can use your Apple Watch to track the location of your iPhone, Airpods, or other AirTag-connected items.
  • Apple Music streaming
  • Apple Pay

Features vary by model, and insurance providers may specify which ones are covered.

FDA-cleared features include the ECG and AFib apps, which monitor heart rhythm, and the StrivePD app, which helps people with Parkinson’s track symptoms and manage treatment.7

As far as compatibility, Apple Watches only pair with iPhones.

Watch out for free smartwatch scams

Unfortunately, smartwatch scams target people who are looking for free or low-cost devices. There are some common scams to look out for:

  • You get a free smartwatch in the mail you didn't request. It could be full of malware to take your personal information once you start using it.
  • Free smartwatch ads requesting payment for shipping — the device may never come, but the ad creator still gets your payment information.
  • You are being pressured to take action right away or you will lose the option to get a free smartwatch.
  • You can only pay with specific options like cryptocurrency, wire transfer, gift cards or by first depositing a check they send into your bank account.
  • You get a call, text message or email from a business or organization you know, but they are asking for information they should already know.

If a free smartwatch offer seems too good to be true or feels off, do some research. You can start by searching Google to see what others have said about the free smartwatch offer. Also, check forums like Reddit and resources like Quora before acting on an offer.

Some scammers try to make websites and emails look official, using logos and colors that look like legit business you already trust, so be cautious about clicking on links. When in doubt, contact that business directly to ask about the free smartwatch offer.

In these threads, Reddit users talk about smartwatch scams and how they handled them:

With silver and gold's record-breaking prices getting all the headlines recently, you may be digging through your drawers for old jewelry or flatware to sell.

However, it can be difficult to determine whether your items are plated, white gold, or sterling silver. They are all have value in the resale market, but it's critical to know what you have to get the best price — and not get cheated.

For example, a sterling silver fork could be worth about $80 if you sell to a scrap silver buyer (as of early January, 2026). If it is silver-plated, that fork is worth no more than its service in putting food in your mouth. White gold, however, is priced the same as yellow gold — and gold prices keep hitting record highs, currently above $5,000 per ounce. A white or yellow gold wedding ring goes for about $200 at a local or online buyer.

Only pure and sterling silver or gold (white or yellow) is worth selling , while plated silver is typically not worth selling outside of a garage sale.

What is sterling silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy (a mixture of metals) made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper or nickel, to increase durability. Just like 14k or 18k gold, sterling silver is blended with other metals to create longer-lasting products.

Sterling silver is also called 925 silver because of its 92.5% silver content.

Sterling silver is the most common silver that you will see for silver, flatware, serving pieces and most silver coins. It is strong, durable, beautiful and has some resale value.

Difference between silver plated and sterling silver

Unlike solid sterling silver, items that have silver plating are made of another metal such as copper, brass or nickel, and are covered with a thin layer of silver. Candlesticks made of silver plating often have plaster or cork inside.

In flatware, plated silver is also called “Hotel silver.” Learn more about flatware values and reselling in this guide.

It is not worth it to silver buyers to buy silver-plated items, though you may find some interest at an antique or thrift shop.

How can you tell silver plated from sterling silver?

Silver-plated items are often marked with an EP, EPNS or A1, while sterling silver is marked with a 925 based on its 92.5% pure silver content. Sterling silver from the U.K. may also be stamped with marks that indicate where it was made:

Sterling silver hallmarks.
  • Lion passant = England
  • Standing lion = Glasgow
  • Thistle = Edinburgh
  • Crowned harp = Dublin
  • Image of Britannia = Britannia silver (which is 95% pure)

The United States and most of the world follow the standard of 92.5%, though France and some other countries have a standard of 95%, or 950 silver. Learn more about stamps on jewelry.

These are some key differences between silver plated and sterling silver items:

Pros and cons of silver plated vs. sterling silver

There are some pros and cons to buying silver plated vs. sterling silver jewelry and other items:

Silver plated vs sterling: Color

While their difference may be subtle and virtually unnoticeable, silver plating tends to be slightly lighter in color than sterling silver, with more shine.

Silver plated vs sterling: Durability

Silver-plated items are more prone to chipping, scratching, and dulling, though the base metal under silver plating is considered more durable than sterling silver.

Sterling silver can tarnish when exposed to certain elements like chlorine and household chemicals, though it’s easy to clean in a solution of baking soda, salt, white vinegar, and boiling water. Plated silver can be cleaned but may need to be replated.

Silver plated vs sterling: Scratch resistance

Sterling silver is more scratch resistant than silver-plated items.

Sterling silver is easy to clean and polish, while silver-plated items will have to be replated to keep them looking new.

Silver plated vs sterling: Cost today vs. resale value

Sterling silver items typically cost more than those with silver plating because of their high precious metal content.

However, as far as resale value, sterling silver is worth 92.5% of the spot price of silver, while silver plating cannot be melted down for its silver content.

As of , the silver resale value in the United States was at per ounce, or  per gram.

Sterling silver versus real silver

100% silver in its purest form is relatively soft, which makes it susceptible to marks and scratches. Silver bullion in bars or coins is typically made of pure silver, while sterling is an alloy, pure silver mixed with alloys, to make it stronger and therefore usable in flatware, coins and jewelry.

Is sterling silver real silver?

Yes, sterling silver is pure silver mixed with a small percentage of another metal to make it more wearable and durable.

Which is more expensive: real or sterling silver?

Real sterling silver is more expensive than silver-plated, but less expensive than gold and white gold.

As of , the silver resale value in the United States was at per ounce, or  per gram.

Check out our post on how to tell the differences between sterling silver and white gold.

Is silver cheaper than sterling silver?

No, silver is not cheaper than sterling silver, simply because it contains a higher percentage of precious metal content — close to 100% silver vs. 92.5% silver in sterling silver.

At a price of $79 per ounce (the going rate as of December 27, 2025), a 1-ounce piece of silver would be worth about $74, while a 1-ounce piece of sterling silver would be worth about $80.

What lasts longer: silver or sterling silver?

Sterling silver is more durable than 100% silver because of the other metals added to it. That’s why it’s commonly used in jewelry and flatware over pure silver — it holds up better to everyday wear and tear.

While both may tarnish over time when exposed to elements like chlorine and household chemicals, they’re easy to clean in a solution of baking soda, salt, white vinegar, and boiling water. Both types of silver are also strong enough not to be broken with daily use.

Which is better: sterling silver or silver?

Based strictly on price, pure silver is more valuable than sterling silver. But unless you have silver bars or silver coins you want to part with, you’re more likely to have sterling silver in your china cabinet or jewelry box.

That’s because sterling silver outperforms when it comes to durability, which is why it’s more commonly used for everyday items like silver flatware and jewelry.

How to tell if silver is real

“Real silver,” and sterling silver can be vetted with these home tricks to ensure they are not plated silver, or another metal (or plastic):

How to tell if silver is real with ice

Because silver is highly conductive, it’s said to melt ice more quickly than other metals. If you put a piece of ice on the metal in question and on another piece of metal you know isn’t silver, the ice should melt more quickly than the other piece of ice if the object you're testing is made of silver.

However, most silver enthusiasts say this test isn’t the most accurate, since a thick silver plating may produce the same results as sterling silver. Plus, other factors, like the size and thickness of the two objects you’re testing, can affect results.

Tip: The ice test isn’t a full-proof way to test if something is silver plated.

How to tell if silver is real with a lighter

Real silver turns black over time. You can speed up this process to test for silver by holding a lighter to its surface or by dipping it in vinegar. However, silver plating can also turn black using these testing methods, so you may have to scratch its surface first to test the metal under the outer surface.

Tip: The lighter test isn’t a full-proof way to test if something is silver plated.

How to tell if silver is real with acid

There are acid test kits available on Amazon to test for sterling silver vs. plated silver. When you drop acid on the silver plating, it's stripped away to reveal the metal underneath.

Tip: You can buy an at-home acid test to check for silver plating.

This precious metal tester kit from Amazon is available for $21.49.

How to tell if silver is real with a magnet

Real silver is not magnetic. If you hold a magnet up to the object in question and it sticks, it is not sterling silver. However, silver-plated items made of copper and brass also will not stick to a magnet, so this test may only work on silver-plated nickel or other magnetic metals.

Tip: The magnet test is only effective on silver-plated nickel.

If you want to make sure what you have is sterling silver, you can bring it to a local jeweler or silversmith, who will likely perform a professional acid test or examine the metal for indicative markings.

What is the difference between sterling silver and white gold?

Sterling silver and white gold are both alloys (a mixture of metals), but they’re made up of different metals:

  • Sterling silver = 92.5% pure silver + other metals (typically copper or nickel)
  • White gold = 58.3%-99% pure gold (varies) + other metals (typically silver, nickel, palladium, or zinc)

White gold is also usually plated with a layer of rhodium (a rare platinum group metal), which gives it its white appearance and prevents the gold from scratching.

What's the difference between sterling silver and 14k white gold?

Sterling silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver, and 14k white gold is made up of 58.3% pure gold. Both are mixed with other metals to increase durability.

Sterling silver vs white gold: Color

Sterling silver is typically slightly brighter white than white gold. Unplated white gold may also have a slightly yellow sheen from its gold content.

Sterling silver vs white gold: Durability

Because it’s often plated in rhodium — which makes it resistant to scratches and dents — white gold is considered more durable than sterling silver.

Sterling silver vs white gold: Scratch resistance

Rhodium plating on white gold makes it more scratch resistant than sterling silver, though it must be replated every six months to a year to retain its appearance and protective quality, according to New York City jeweler Frank Darling.

Sterling silver vs white gold: Maintenance

Both sterling silver and white gold need regular maintenance to retain their optimal appearance:

  • Sterling silver: Sun exposure, lotions, makeup, chlorine, cleaning products, and more outside factors can cause sterling silver to tarnish. To keep your sterling silver in tip top shape, make a paste of baking soda and water and lightly scrub your jewelry with a cloth, or place your jewelry in a mixture of ½ cup of white vinegar and 2 tbsp of baking soda for a couple of hours.
  • White gold: If you want your white gold to maintain its pure white appearance, you should have it re-plated in rhodium every six months to a year, which typically costs between $50-$100, depending on the jeweler and how thick the plating is.

Sterling silver vs white gold: Cost today vs. resale value

While sterling silver costs significantly less than white gold and it has a lower resale value. This post details the difference retail and resale prices of yellow vs white gold.

Who buys silver plated?

Unless you have a large quantity of silver-plated items — like silver-plated flatware, platters, or dishes — you likely won’t get much, if any, money for them. However, these are some places where you can sell silver-plated items, especially if they hold value as a collector’s item:

  • Pawn shops
  • Auction houses
  • Online marketplaces like ebay and Craigslist
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Antiques dealers
  • ebay
  • Some online precious metals buyers if you have large quantities of silver-plated items

You can also donate your silver-plated items to a thrift store, though you won’t be paid, but may qualify for a tax deduction.

If you’re asking “Where can I sell silver-plated items near me?” or “Who buys silver plated stuff near me?” you may be able to find a local pawn shop or antiques dealer to buy your items depending on their age, make, and quality.
