I have been a work-at-home freelance writer and media professional for 20 years.

There is no way that I could manage my family life, business, and personal care without the flexibility my work-from-home schedule affords me.

Since becoming a mom, I have felt so grateful that I have control over my time, location, client base and general professional happiness.

One of the most common questions I get from readers is:

What are the best jobs for single moms?

Single moms want what other moms want in a job โ€” but maybe even more so. What are the hallmarks of good single mom jobs? Here are some:

  • Good pay (at least $20/hr)
  • Flexible schedule
  • Remote (at least partly)
  • Fair boss (including, sometimes, yourself!)
  • Interesting work
  • Room to grow

Thankfully, many companies recognize that some good positions they need to fill don't benefit from a university degree. Also, there are many ways to be self-employed or a contract worker without going back to school โ€” and still make a very good living without going into student debt. You can also find a no background check job if you have a criminal record.

If you are thinking of going back to school, we also put together a list of scholarships for single moms.

Of course, many of us really want or need the flexibility of working from home. Here is a list of 21 jobs single moms can do from home, as well as same-day pay jobs.

FAQs about careers and jobs for single moms

Bottom line: What are some high-paying careers for single moms?

Accounting jobs

Every business, and most individuals, need an accountant at some point โ€” and much of the work can be done remotely, from home. Whether you are a CPA, bookkeeper or accounting assistant, there are many job opportunities in a wide variety of industries, for all levels of education and experience.

Admin jobs

Administrative work is a broad description that can range from basic data entry that pays $15 per hour, to highly skilled executive assistant positions that earn multiple six-figure salaries with benefits โ€” most of which can be done remotely.

If you get an administrative job through a temp agency, you may be able to get paid on the same day.

21 jobs that no one wants (but pay really well!)

Bookkeeper

Becoming a bookkeeper tops our list of the best jobs for single moms because it offers:

  • Pay as much as $60+/hr
  • Flexible work hours
  • Room for growth
  • Challenging work
  • Quick training

Bookkeepers can earn a salary, or build a business earning $60+/ hour, which can be more than $100,000 per year. Entry-level bookkeeper jobs can pay $20/hour.

Depending on whether you are an independent bookkeeper or work for a company, you may be able to set your own payment schedule.

The job description for bookkeepers includes organizing financial transactions, tax information, and โ€œthe booksโ€ for their clients. They also update financial statements, read over financial documents for accuracy, and create reports.

If there is a problem with a statement or a miscalculation within their clientโ€™s numbers, itโ€™s the bookkeeperโ€™s job to find it.

While there are bookkeeping jobs available, more and more companies are turning to bookkeepers who work from home. Bloggers and influencers hire bookkeepers that work virtually, as do companies that donโ€™t work out of a brick-and-mortar office.

Because most bookkeeping tasks are done online, many small businesses also hire work-at-home bookkeepers to keep their overhead down.

Bookkeeping is also an ideal career for military spouses looking for jobs working from home, since they so often have to move to new places.

There are many online bookkeeping courses:

Bookkeeper Launch is an online video course that helps people with zero experience learn bookkeeping skills, find new clients and build a successful online bookkeeper business โ€” from home.

Bookkeeper Launch offers a free masterclass that goes over:

Child care provider jobs

Child care jobs can range from the occasional babysitter, to part- or full-time nanny positions, working in a family's home, or being a child care provider in a daycare center.

Child care providers may choose to open a daycare center in their home. In this case, they may decide to watch several children in addition to their own (if they have any), while some work for someone else watching their children as nannies, or sporadic babysitting for an hourly rate.

Most babysitters get paid upon job completion, though full-time provider jobs likely pay out on a weekly or biweekly basis.

The requirements for this work really depend on the type of daycare position you desire. For example, The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that many states require private, in-home daycare centers to become licensed.

To qualify for licensure, you likely need to pass a background check and have an up-to-date record of immunizations. You may also need to meet a minimum training requirement and be certified in CPR.

Some states also require childcare workers to earn a credential such as the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential offered by the Council for Professional Recognition. This credential requires some coursework along with childcare experience.

Check out our post on 8 free online childcare training courses.

Clinical research coordinator jobs

Clinical research coordinators oversee and assist with a wide range of experiments and clinical trials. They perform administrative tasks such as data entry and documentation, but they also conduct a lot of research to prepare for clinical trials and other experiments.

If youโ€™re interested in building a career in this field, you can explore current research assistant jobs with visa sponsorship to find positions that match your skills and background.

Clinical research coordinators also spend long periods of time researching and brainstorming potential experiments and conducting interviews to find out which experiments may be feasible. Finally, they follow up after experiments are complete to study and report any findings.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that natural science managers (the official term for this career chosen by the BLS) earned an annual median wage of $118,970 in 2017. However, many clinical research coordinators earned a lot more.

Content manager

Like the job title implies, content managers manage website content. Think about your favorite blog or news site. Chances are, a content manager is in charge of scheduling and posting everything youโ€™re reading and every email alert coming to your inbox.

If you have a knack for juggling multiple tasks and making sure things get done โ€” skills you already possess as a single mom โ€” this career might be the perfect fit for you.

Content managers plan and schedule editorial content, assign projects to freelance writers, send out promotional emails and share content on social media.

Glassdoor lists the national average salary for content managers at $75,672, though some positions may be offered on a part-time basis. Many content manager jobs can be performed remotely and offer flexible hours.

Copywriter/Freelance writer

Businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations all need content: Websites, emails, newsletters, texts, social media, books and more. Increasingly, the skills of SEO, or search engine optimization, are all critical to being competitive in the writing world.

A journalism, marketing or communications degree will give you a leg up in landing one of these positions, but you can also obtain relevant expertise from freelance writing gigs and free online courses, like this one from Coursera on Search Engine Optimization. Corporate travel consultant

Credit card companies, travel firms, and hospitality-related businesses hire travel consultants to assist corporate clients with travel planning, booking itineraries, and emergency assistance.

These jobs are completely virtual, requiring the consultant to work over phone or through email, chat, and sometimes social media.

With full-time and part-time schedules, moms with excellent customer service skills and a desire to help others will find success in these roles.

Most travel jobs are paid on commission, or a percentage of the cost of the booked trip.

While corporate travel jobs may pay a lower rate per hour than some of the other jobs on this list (usually in the $15 to $20 per hour range), the fact you may work flexible hours makes it easy to pair this job with another job you can do from home. Another perk: This job makes it easy to keep your eye on travel deals!

Customer service chat jobs

Using phone and chat, customer service jobs are often done remotely from the parent company โ€” including from your home.

If the job is offered through a temp agency, you may be able to get paid on a daily basis.

Dog groomer

If you love dogs and want a rewarding career helping them look their best, you can become a dog groomer or even start a dog grooming business.

While pay varies based on location and experience, beginner dog groomers can make $34 per hour or more, though $23 is the national average, according to Ziprecruiter.

While you do not need a degree to become a dog groomer, you do need to learn grooming skills. Some pet stores and independent groomers will train you on the job or pay for you to receive training. Independent training programs are available online and in person.

Doula

Doulas help mothers with the emotional and physical support during birth and postpartum. Mothers who were assisted by a doula have been found to have healthier outcomes for both mother and baby, as well as lower financial cost. Doulas in large cities can earn $100,000 or more per year.

According to parents who used doulas on Reddit, some doulas charge half of their fee upfront, then the other half ahead of the delivery.

Grant writing jobs

Salaried grant writers who write proposals for non-profit organizations average $45,000 per year, though freelance grant writers working remotely from home, online can earn $50/ hour or more.

Grant writers pull together the applications businesses and nonprofits use to apply for grants from public and private foundations.

These individuals read through grant applications, draft intriguing and informative proposals, and work with donors to ensure the clients they work for have a solid chance at the grants theyโ€™re applying for.

This job requires excellent writing skills as well as the ability to conduct thorough research. Grant writers also need to be organized and have excellent communication skills since they will need to interact and chat with clients and potential donors frequently.

Payscale.com figures show that grant writers are currently earning approximately $45,757 per year. However, self-employed grant writers who are good with their time may be able to earn $100 per hour or more.

Graphic designer jobs

Graphic designers create the visual effects and artwork that businesses use in brochures, print media, and web pages found online.

These professionals need to have an eye for creativity and some experience using software programs. You donโ€™t necessarily need a college degree, but you do need to master photo editing programs as well as software programs like Canva.

While the Bureau of Labor Statistics says graphic designers earn a little less than $50,000 per year on average, their figures donโ€™t reflect the many online design jobs available today. I personally know graphic designers who design the pages for websites and earn upwards of $100 per hour! Thatโ€™s a lot of money, and it just shows how much potential there is in this field.

Some jobs require special training, a degree or certificate, while others do not.

Clinical research coordinators oversee and assist with a wide range of experiments and clinical trials. They perform administrative tasks such as data entry and documentation, but they also conduct a lot of research to prepare for clinical trials and other experiments.

Clinical research coordinators also spend long periods of time researching and brainstorming potential experiments and conducting interviews to find out which experiments may be feasible. Finally, they follow up after experiments are complete to study and report any findings.

Nursing jobs

Programmer

Coders and programmers build all the software or hardware code to create anything from a website, to an app, to the hardware of a phone, laptop or game console. This is an in-demand field, where salaries easily top $80,000, and can go up to $200,000 or more with experience (though degrees are not always required).

Payout schedules vary depending on whether you're an independent contractor or work for a company.

Franchising (Business Owner With Built-In Support)

Franchising allows single moms to own a business with an established brand, proven systems, and ongoing support. Instead of starting from scratch, you invest in a franchise model and operate under an existing companyโ€™s name.

Franchise options range from home-based businesses and senior care services to cleaning companies, tutoring centers, and food concepts. Some franchises can be run semi-remotely or with flexible hours, depending on the model.

Recruiting coordinator

Recruiting coordinators manage the entire job hiring process for businesses and organizations. This can include: post open positions, coordinate job fairs, conduct background checks, schedule interviews, communicate with candidates and more.

Tax preparer jobs

If you have experience using tax software to prepare federal and state taxes for individuals, then consider a seasonal gig as a tax preparer. Tax season runs from January 1 through April 15, though tax preparers do work outside of this high season.

Tax preparers are professionals who provide guidance, advice, and explanations to help customers fill out their tax forms during tax season.

Tax preparation jobs can be full-time or part-time. Part-time roles during tax season can be a good option for parents looking to work from home. Beyond tax season, you can keep the work going year-round by offering other services. These include bookkeeping, payroll processing, and financial planning.

Large tax preparation companies, like Intuit, H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, and Liberty Tax, rely on seasonal workers to satisfy customer demand during tax season. These large companies hire thousands of tax preparers each year, meaning there is huge demand. Small accounting firms also hire for these roles, and you can set up your own shop and work independently.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a part-time tax preparer makes on average $22.64 per hour, which amounts to $47,090 annually. Senior tax preparers can easily earn more than $100,000 per year, while tax preparation managers can take home $200,000 annually, according to Robert Half Finance & Accounting.

You may also be eligible for commissions and bonuses. Per Glassdoor, H&R Block tax preparers typically receive around $2,500 in additional pay from commissions and bonuses. Jackson Hewitt employees typically earn an additional $340, and Liberty Tax employees usually snag an extra $300.

Donโ€™t have a background in tax prep? Take the free federal income tax course. H&R Block also offers a virtual income tax prep course, which runs for 12 weeks. (The course is free, but course materials cost $149 in most states.)

Project manager jobs

Project managers oversee projects from start to finish. They set the overall scope of a project, coordinate deadlines for all individuals involved, monitor deliverables to make sure work is completed on time, communicate with stakeholders, and provide administrative support as needed. Industries in which youโ€™ll find project manager positions include construction, software development, information technology, healthcare, and marketing.

Youโ€™ll excel in this kind of position if youโ€™re super-organized, enjoy collaborating with others, work well under deadlines, and have great time management skills. Youโ€™ll also need to be savvy with workflow tools, such as Trello and Asana, which are commonly used by project managers. Other tools that are good to be familiar with include Slack (to communicate with teammates), Evernote (to organize your notes), and Dropbox (to share files).

Per the Project Management Institute, by 2027, employers around the world will need more than 87 million people in project management roles (yes, you read that right!).  According to Glassdoor, the average annual salary for a full-time project manager is around $66,000. Rates start at $46,000 on the low end but can go up to $107,000 on the high end, per Glassdoor.

There are also certification courses you can take from the Project Management Institute (PMI) that can help you stand out from other job candidates.

These people work with medical and legal organizations, publishing houses, educational institutions, television and movie production companies, and other businesses, and are responsible for helping two or more parties communicate through language barriers.

For medical and legal translation, experience in the medical or legal fields is a must. However, the biggest requirement for this job is absolute fluency in at least two languages.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, through the decade ending in 2026, jobs for interpreters and translators should increase by 18%. Approximately 22% of interpreters are also self-employed since this job is one that can easily be done from home.

Tutor

If you have solid proficiency in a school subject, including English, math, science, a world language like Spanish or Mandarin, you can find tutoring jobs near you. Other in-demand specialties include English as a Second Language (for both children and adults), GED, and SAT/ACT test prep.

Consider joining and/or getting certified from the National Tutoring Association, the American Tutoring Association, or the Association for Tutoring Professionals. A college degree and education experience is helpful.

You may be able to find gigs through people you know, CraigsList, Facebook groups and NextDoor, or community organizations that serve low-income students. You can also apply to be a teacher's aide or educational paraprofessional at a public or private school near you.

Virtual assistant jobs

While most entry-level VAs start earning around $20 per hour, experienced virtual assistants can earn upwards of $75 per hour. Keep in mind that salaried executive assistants at top corporations can earn $200,000 per year or more โ€” these are important jobs!

These professionals perform virtual services like customer service, accounting, scheduling, word processing, and sales-related support tasks. Virtual assistants can also be social media managers, create content for Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, as well as email campaigns.

People who do well in these jobs like to engage people in lively conversation and provide interesting links to articles, videos, and other media to attract website visitors to a companyโ€™s website or try out a product or service.

Did your divorce story start with, โ€œI knew he was the one!โ€ ??

At my wedding, my mom stood up and gave a heartfelt little speech, which included, โ€œAfter Emma went out with him for the first time, she called me up and said, โ€˜I know he's the one!'โ€

That's a really sweet story, the one a mom is supposed to say at a wedding. It wasn't true. The real story was when I met my ex, I was also carrying out a long-distance romance with an older British school teacher who lived in Santiago, Chile, and in my youthful, South American-sized ego told anyone who would listen how I was tormented in my inability to choose between the two men.

Ultimately, I made the right choice, but, well โ€ฆ the rest is history.

When is remarriage OK? How long after divorce can you remarry?

So many moms I know jump out of marriage and immediately start hunting for the next husband.

A desire for remarriage is understandable. After all:

  • You were likely used to being married, so that feels normal
  • Society pressures you to be married. All kinds of social and cultural messages that sanction marriage, not to mention tax breaks, cost of living and travel discounts for couples

That is not to say marriage is wrong โ€” or wrong for you. It may be totally right!

First, after a big breakup or divorce, take a full year to be a nice, steaming hot mess. I show you how here. Good news: You can date and get laid! But no serious relationships yet.

Then, take some time to heal your wounds. Maybe your ex cheated, and you need to sort through that. Perhaps you are struggling to find yourself financially and professionally, moving homes, and generally getting your act in order.

First thingโ€”surround yourself with some great friends. Maybe these are wonderful old friends who share your new life vision, or you build new relationships with women and/or men who are also committed to positivity and building a new life. Read: How to make friends after divorce.

Then, it is time to dip your toe in the water.

Benefits of long-term marriage

How long should you date before getting married a second time?

There is no one answer for this question, but I offer you this:

One, are you really over your first divorce? Everyone is entitled to be a screaming hot mess for one year after divorce. Then, I urge you to learn to love your own company. Enjoy quiet time, travel, your children, your friends, your career all by yourself.

Many women struggle for years with confidence, loneliness, getting over an ex, and finding and trusting a boyfriend again. That is part of the process. Maybe not for everyone, but it is completely normal.

Why not just try being single? If you have never been alone, or not been single for a very long time, it can be an important, if not thrilling experience.

Why wait for remarriage after divorce

I recently started a conversation about the desire to remarry (or, for many, get hitched for the first time) in my Facebook group, Millionaire Single Moms. There were 82 comments last time I checked, and all but a few said they had no interest in getting married. Most were happy dating, open to serious partnership (or were currently in one), but the rest found the idea of a marriage draining, a hindrance to their careers and enjoyment of motherhood, and generally cramped the freedom they've come to enjoy.

Plus, they said, what is the point? To wit:

Second marriage statistics

According to the National Center for Family & Marriage Research, the remarriage rate in 2019 was approximately 25.1 remarriages for every 1,000 men and women who were eligible to remarry.

That same year, the median age at remarriage was 48 for men and 44 for women.

Are second marriages more successful? Remarriage statistics

If you're wondering if second marriages are more successful, the answer is no. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, remarried adults have a higher likelihood of divorce than those in their first marriage. Half of remarriages that ended in divorce ended within 10 years.

Research published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that children of divorced parents were about twice as likely to experience divorce themselves. Divorce was most likely to be transmitted between generations if parents reported a low level of discord prior to the marriage ending.

A study published in the PLOS One journal found that the biggest risk for kids in single mother homes is not that she is single, but instability caused by different romantic partners (and their children) moving in and of the home.

[Single mom statistics: Prepare to have your mind blown]

Also, as many women do after divorce, so many moms commenting in the group found their professional and financial groove, and were reluctant to share that success with a man inside of the institution of marriage. These women are no fools: In a study of 4,000 married couples, the University of Chicago found that once a woman started to earn more than her husband, divorce rates increased. Other supporting research: Single women are happier and healthier than married women, and women are far less happy in marriages than men. Single people have more friends, more community connections and are more politically involved.

Second marriage divorce rate

It has been widely reported that the divorce rate for single marriages is about 40-50%, second marriages 60-67%, and third marriages, 73-74%, though there is no legitimate reported data that backs up these statistics.

However, risk factors for divorce include:

  • You or your partner's parents were divorced
  • Adults whose parents divorced and remarry are twice as likely to divorce than adults whose parents divorced but never remarried
  • You are poor
  • Lower education correlates with higher chances of divorce
  • You married young
  • Spouses practice different religions or race
  • Cohabiting or having a child together before marriage

Second marriage after 40

According to the Pew Research Center, 57% of divorced people in the United States ages 35 to 44 remarry.

Second marriage after 50

63% of divorced people in the United States ages 45 to 54 remarry, as do 67% of divorced people ages 55-64 and 50% of people over 65.

But when is remarriage or second or third marriage right?

The answer is that if you're really committed to finding love, if you really want to make your current relationship work, you stay until you can't stay anymore.

Maybe deep down you're terrified of love, and bolt when shit gets real. Maybe you cling to those glossy rom-com plotlines and friends' glittering relationship narratives on Facebook and jump ship when your own romantic story deviates from the meant-to-be-love script.

But maybe what you should do is dig in and scrape below expectations of shine. Maybe you ignore all the messages about how finding The One and things Meant to Be and create your own love story.

Why post-divorce breakups hurt so damn bad

Or maybe you're older and wiser now. And maybe like me, when you go on a date with a really brilliant guy, and the walking date turns into the burger date, which turns into the dessert date, and you still want to know more โ€” and even though lightning didn't hit your heart or pants when you saw him waiting for you on the sidewalk, you go out with him again. Because that is what adults do.

Yes, that is what is done by adults who have told stories about love-at-first sight and got their hearts busted up and whooped on and thrown into moving traffic. And then they get up again and write their own love stories.

Second marriage problems

Common second (and third, fourth and fifth!) marriage problems include:

  • Conflict over step-children and blended family issues
  • Jealousy of an ex-spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend
  • Resentment over ongoing conflict from previous marriages
  • Disagreements over where to live, housekeeping and personal space (each spouse may be used to having their own home, but now must share in the remarriage)
  • Money (just like in a starter marriage!)
  • Stirring up of wounds and baggage from previous relationships
  • Lack of trust โ€” of each other, and of yourself

But how do you learn to trust your dating instincts when they were likely horribly wrong once? How do you learn to trust your own judgment when your judgment lead you to the painful fate of divorce?

The answer is listening to your gut, but also digging in, being patient and committing to knowing someone. This is increasingly difficult, thanks to our culture of instant gratification. This Thought Catalog essay captures the effects of online dating, social media and a general culture void of long-term commitment.

Our choices are killing us. We think choice means something. We think opportunity is good. We think the more chances we have, the better. But, it makes everything watered-down. Never mind actually feeling satisfied, we donโ€™t even understand what satisfaction looks like, sounds like, feels like. Weโ€™re one foot out the door, because outside that door is more, more, more. We donโ€™t see whoโ€™s right in front of our eyes asking to be loved, because no one is asking to be loved. We long for something that we still want to believe exists. Yet, we are looking for the next thrill, the next jolt of excitement, the next instant gratification.

Oh man, is that the cold truth. Except for this:  I want to be loved, and I know a lot of people out there who want to be loved, too. In fact, everyone wants to be loved. But we can confuse an exciting date, sexual chemistry or a glamorous person for the promise of love. Sometimes, the problem is not that we don't commit enough, we commit too much.

I'm guilty of all the above.  My recent history includes going bananas over the cute cardiologist with the glamorous life resume full of charity work and swing dancing and media startups that would give any mom a case of love-at-first-sight. Yet, I'm guilty of overlooking an entire evening of his self-references of being an โ€œalpha prime,โ€ all the way to his trying to sneak around my insistence of condom use before I finally committed to not committing to a second date.

But, ultimately, what is wrong with any of it? In those two little examples, I spent four mostly nice months with a good person, and in the second I enjoyed some fun company, a free dinner and left the scene with my dignity in tact and a good story in my pocket. I stuck it out in each one until I couldn't stand another minute.

What if you look back on your courtship with your ex, only to see the red flags waving like crazy all over God's creation? Do you regret every moment you spent with him? The kids and the memories? Would your life really be better if you had left him sooner โ€” or never got involved at all?

How to deal if you feel guilty for divorcing a nice guy

What are the odds of divorced couples getting back together and remarrying

Researchers at California State University in Sacramento interviewed 1,001 reunited couples around the world, and found that just 6% said they married, divorced and remarried the same person โ€” and 72 percent of those who reunited stayed together, particularly if their separations occurred at a young age. The author, Nancy Kalish, Ph.D., published her findings in a book, Lost & Found Lovers: Facts and Fantasies of Rekindled Romances.

Here is what Reddit users say on the subject:

How to do second marriage without divorce

If you are ready to get married again after a divorce, I wish you all the best. I really do! Some quick advice:

1. Keep your own money, girl.

Before you send theย digital wedding invitations, make sure you and your soon-to-be have separate checking and savings accounts (though many couples choose to also share a joint account for shared expenses โ€” not a bad idea). Keep saving and investing for your future โ€” and never consider a man a financial plan!

2. Focus on your co-parenting.

If you share children with an ex, bring him into the conversation. If possible, have a meeting between your new partner and your child's other parent, and yourself. Express your desire to raise the children collectively, but recognize that the kids' parents will always be their mother and father (or two moms or two dads) first.

3. Get a prenuptial agreement

You can hire a lawyer, or create a prenup yourself through a service like RocketLawyer for a flat fee of $49. HelloPrenup also guides you through the prenup process and allows you to create your own documents for $599 per couple.

4. Seek remarriage counseling

Go for remarriage counseling. Just unpack all the logistical and emotional considerations of combining your lives, your families and your futures. Can't hurt. It may make this transition easier. And if you are afraid of what couples therapy digs up, then you 100% must go!

Studies find that therapy has been helpful for millions of individuals and couples. Pre-marriage counseling can be a great way to work through any issues now, as well as understand if marriage is right for you.

Whether you pay a visit to your regular therapist, seek out a session with your pastor, priest or rabbi, or spend big money on a couple's retreat, remarriage counseling can be an important step in understanding your compatibility, ironing out relationship issues, and establishing boundaries and rules.

Remarriage FAQs

Does marriage counseling really work?

A 2017 University of Miami study of veterans' marriages found the relationship were still improved 18 months after therapy. Another study from the University of Ottawa researchers found that couples therapy benefits lasted at least 24 months after treatment.

When should you seek pre-marriage counseling?

It is a good idea for all couples to seek pre-marriage therapy. Counseling before committing to your relationship can help establish rules and boundaries, and questions regarding:

  • How to blend families, co-parent and manage step-parenting
  • Manage money and finances in a second marriage
  • Establish guidelines regarding exes
  • Create expectations for how to manage in-law relationships and holidays
  • Improve communication, sex and connection

You may seek pre-marriage counseling near you through your current therapist, a leader in your church or temple, a specialist like a certified financial advisor โ€” or through online therapy.

Our list of best online therapy sites includes BetterHelp, which has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and allows you to choose from thousands of certified, licensed therapists anonymously (no worries about running into a neighbor at the appointment!). BetterHelp fees start at $65/week for unlimited messaging and weekly live sessions. Financial assistance is available. Read about my experience with BetterHelp.

Is it common for divorced couples to get back together?

Signs your husband or wife is about to leave you โ€” and what to do to prepare

Finding your soulmate after marriage

I'm going to be 39 this year. Round that up, and I'm basically 40. Which is middle-aged.

I'm not going to pretend like I'm reveling in that, or even that I don't care. I'm none too thrilled about getting older, the least of which is that my crepeing under-eyes, sagging chin and increasingly profound laugh lines make selfie-taking a humbling chore. I can already see how it will be harder to be professionally relevant, it is harder to stay thin, and according to some older friends, very bad things happen to your genitals as the years press on.

But one that that comes with age, is that relationships are older. And those relationships, they are so, so dear. While traveling in Denmark, I was feeling blue, alone in a foreign country. I pinged my friend Kirsten, who I've known for 15 years. She's going through some real-life rough times (not like my first-world, boo-hoo I'm lonesome in my fabulous Copenhagen apartment โ€œrough timesโ€) and I asked if she could nab a plane ticket to join me for a few days.

โ€œI can't this time, but wanna Skype?โ€ she immediately replied.

โ€œYep! Now? Want to join me in some wine?

โ€œIt's 11:30 a.m. and I have a few conference calls ahead of me, but don't let that stop you,โ€ she texted.

โ€œOh yeah โ€” not everyone's time zone revolves around my own, perpetual 5 o'clock somewhere.โ€

We jumped on video chat and caught up (while I uncorked my bottle). We noted that not only are we both really into our careers, share politics, and have similar mommy issues, our periods are in synch! It didn't really matter what we talked about โ€” we love each other, talk in short-hand thanks to so many years of friendship, and can be totally candid with one another in a way that is just not the same with newer friends. Time has created an intimacy that is otherwise impossible.

Apply this to romance.

What to watch out for re: relationship red flags

Benefits of long-term marriage

For all my dating antics, and appreciation for short-term affairs and sometimes-lovers, those romantic relationships simply are not long-term marriages. I was with my husband eight years, married four, before we split up. That is a short marriage. Every once in a while I come across an email or little note that we left one another, and they seem as if they were written by other people โ€” people who were lovers, rather than two people who lived through a whole lot together and knew each other in ways that cannot be articulated in words. Because we were. Ours was not a long-term marriage. Today, in the rare occurrence that we chat casually, the familiarity is deeper and more presumed โ€” even if we are no longer romantically involved, we are bound by time. I have known him nearly 15 years, and there is a connection that is like those very old friends or the family that we are. That is precious.

In my future, I can imagine a life that is full of different lovers โ€” some for an evening, others for a few years. That is a comfortable pattern for me, but it is limiting. In the rest of my life, I seek out intense experiences that challenge myself. Adventures in travel and exercise, books and movies that challenge my intellect. But emotional adventures are perhaps the greatest of them all. Motherhood, possibly the most gripping, mind- and heart-expanding experience yet in my middle-aged life. I want to experience all I can in this world, and there is something in a long-term marriage that cannot be replicated in other experiences. Those years and decades of love and passion and tedium and tragedy and healing and adoration and resentment and resolve and acceptance and love and love that a good marriage has. That is an experience that I don't know. Not yet.

When is remarriage OK?

After a big breakup or divorce, take a full year to be a nice, steaming hot mess. Take some time to heal your wounds.

How long should you date before getting married a second time?

Why not just try being single? If you have never been alone, or not been single for a very long time, it can be an important, if not thrilling experience.

Are second marriages more successful?

If you're wondering if second marriages are more successful, the answer is no.ย According to theย U.S. Census Bureau, remarried adults have a higher likelihood of divorce than those in their first marriage. Half of remarriages that ended in divorce endedย within 10 years.

Just as you can sell pure silver in the form of bullion and coins, you can make money when you sell sterling silver jewelry, coins, silverware, tableware and other items.

Silver prices are up 41% from a year ago on a silver shortage, stock market volatility and high interest rates.

As of Dec. 31, 2025, silver was selling at $73.10 per ounce โ€” a 41% jump from a year earlier.

However, don't assume that a 1-ounce silver fork or bracelet will fetch you $73!

Sterling silver is worth 92.5% of the silver spot price โ€” the current price in the marketplace at which silver can be bought or sold. Also, any jewelry store, gold/silver buyer or pawn shop will take a cut.

For example, a sterling silver spoon that weighs 1 ounce is worth about $67, minus the buyer's commission of approximately 20% (1 ounce x .925 x $73.10 on December 31, 2025). Expect to take home $54 for your spoon.

Still better than a tarnished fork or dated bracelet sitting in a drawer.

How to sell sterling silver vs. white gold.

How to sell sterling silver

Whether you sell your sterling silver online or locally, first understand the quality and weight of your item, as well as any special brand, design or history, and research the reputation of any potential silver buyer. Don't always accept the first offer, and feel free to shop around!

1. Verify that your silver is sterling silver

If you want to sell sterling silver, you should first verify that itโ€™s authentic โ€” not just silver plated. Here are a few ways to tell:

  • โ€‹โ€‹Sterling silver items will have a hallmark or be stamped with โ€œ925โ€ (occasionally, โ€œ950โ€ โ€” which means the item has 95% silver). In this post, youโ€™ll learn everything you need to know about symbols stamped on jewelry and how to determine what type of silver you have.
  • If your piece is attracted to a magnet, it is fake or plated โ€” silver is not magnetic.
  • Silver tarnishes but never rusts.
  • A white polishing cloth will remove black debris from sterling silver.
  • Sterling silver will quickly melt a piece of ice โ€” it has the highest thermal conductivity of any metal.

2. Assess resale value of your sterling silver

Next, you should research whether your sterling silver piece has any value as a collector's item. ebay is a good place to start โ€” see what other similar pieces might be selling for.

3. Assess scrap metal value of your sterling silver

Then, determine your sterling silver's scrap metal value โ€” i.e. the value of the silver it contains.

To find out how much your sterling silver is worth, you will need to do a simple calculation:

  1. Find the weight of your sterling silver in ounces
  2. Multiply that weight by .925 to determine how much pure silver you have
  3. Multiply that number by the current price of pure silver (in ounces). This is also called the spot price.

For example, a sterling silver spoon that weighs 1 ounce is worth about $67, minus the buyer's commission of approximately 20% (1 ounce x .925 x $73.10 on December 31, 2025). Expect to take home $54 for your spoon.

Compare the two prices to determine whether you should sell your piece as a collector's item to an auction house, dealer, or pawn shop or to a reputable silver buyer like CashforSilverUSA.

Your boyfriendโ€™s mom can simmer the ingredients on the stove until her whole home smells cozy.

Best birthday gift: Spa gift card

Everyone needs an opportunity to relax, and birthdays are the ideal time to indulge in self care. For a gift that feels truly special, choose artisan chocolates from a premium chocolatier that crafts small-batch assortments with sustainable cocoa, fast delivery, and a delight-or-replace gift guaranteeโ€”think classic truffles, creamy caramels, and seasonal gift boxes.

Art Kits

If you want to give her something thoughtful and creative, try an easy art kit. These paint-by-number sets are a relaxing way for your boyfriendโ€™s mom to unwind and enjoy a little quiet time. When she finishes, sheโ€™ll have a beautiful piece she can proudly hang in her home. You can help her get started by pointing her to some easy art kits that match her style.

A work of visual art

Art tells our personal stories, shows off our tastes and makes our homes much more welcoming and distinctive. As a gift, a work of art is always memorable and doesnโ€™t need to be over-the-top expensive. Check out collections from independent artists on Etsy, everything from photography and paintings to hand-crafted pieces.

Home or garden decor

If she enjoys time in the yard or on the porch, gift a beautiful piece of outdoor artโ€”like a wrought-iron trellis, garden obelisk, or an elegant arch for climbing flowers. For distinctive planters, lanterns, and patio torches with timeless style, explore H Potter for high-quality garden structures and accents that elevate any space and feel special every season.

Cozy sofa throw

When itโ€™s time to relax, curl up and watch a movie or show on Netflix, a cozy blanket enhances the whole experience. For a foolproof sofa throw that your boyfriendโ€™s mom will snuggle with on the regular, try one in an attractive neutral shade with a classic pattern sheโ€™s sure to love.

Think beyond the living room, too: durable puffy blankets with water-resistant backing and easy-clean, machine-washable fabric keep her cozy on the sofa yet are perfect for park picnics, backyard movie nights, and chilly bleachers. Lightweight and packable, they double as a stylish throw with year-round utilityโ€”an upgrade sheโ€™ll actually use.

Subscription Box

Subscription boxes are all the rage right now, and thereโ€™s literally one for everything, whether your boyfriend's mom loves books, beauty products or high-end coffee beans. But in our opinion, the best boxes offer a variety of goodies she can look forward to each month. Pick one with a month-to-month plan so you can customize the number of boxes you send.

To see options that mix practicality with a dash of surprise, you can explore curated gift guides and niche finds that pair everyday usefulness with a playful reveal, much like mystery soccer jerseys, or as they say in The Netherlands, surprise voetbalshirts.

Artisan Teas

Drinking a nice cup of tea is a way to hydrate our bodies, calm our minds and enjoy a moment of peace. A set of upscale loose leaf teas makes a perfect gift for your boyfriendโ€™s mom, with flavors including Detox, Vanilla Mint, English Breakfast and more โ€” plus, little reusable tins are a great opportunity to upcycle! Pair the gift with a tea strainer, just in case she needs one.

Regional Foods

Whether you select artisan grits to bond over your love of the American South or yummy maple syrup to inspire a future girls trip to New England, specialty foods are always a solid gift option on their own or as part of a gift basket.

Jewelry

A pair of elegant earrings can be a thoughtful, everyday accessory that adds a touch of personal style without being overwhelming. Whether she prefers subtle studs for daily wear or something a bit more statement-making for special occasions, jewelry like hypoallergenic earrings designed for sensitive ears offers comfort alongside fashion appeal. To ensure the pair flatters her features perfectly, help her choose the right style based on face shapeโ€”guidance that covers everything from elongating drops for round faces to softening curves for angular ones, all while prioritizing lightweight, irritation-free options.

Hand Cream

Indulgent hand cream is a perfect item to stow anywhere, from your car to your desk to your handbag. But the best thing about hand cream is that you can get a really nice tube for your boyfriendโ€™s mom without spending a lot of money. Try one that comes in a fancy, decorative tin in a variety of scents inspired by luxury perfumes.

Day planner

Sometimes practical gifts, like a day planner, make the best gifts. Skip the bargain bin at a superstore, and opt for a leather-covered planner, complete with unbleached paper and a list of major holidays. Sheโ€™ll love your taste โ€” and think of you when her days are much more organized.

Cigars

If your boyfriendโ€™s mom enjoys the luxury of cigars, a personalized cigar humidor is a thoughtful and elegant gift choice.

A high-quality humidor not only keeps cigars fresh by maintaining the perfect humidity level but also adds a touch of sophistication to her collection. Opt for a beautifully crafted wooden or leather-lined humidor, and consider engraving her initials or a special design to make it uniquely hers.

To make the gift even more special, you can pair it with a selection of quality cigars from reputable brands, ensuring she has an exceptional smoking experience right from the start.

What should I get for my boyfriendโ€™s mom?

The best gifts for your boyfriendโ€™s mom are gifts that will last a while and remind her of your thoughtful gesture. A live plant, stylish day planner, coffee table book or a cozy sofa throw are all great options. Each of these gifts is something she can enjoy on a daily or almost daily basis, and hopefully think of you each time she sees or uses them. As an added bonus, none of these items have to be terribly expensive โ€” there are tons of options at different price points.

What should I get my boyfriendโ€™s mom for her birthday?

Is your boyfriendโ€™s momโ€™s birthday coming up soon? Sassoon says to get her something she wouldnโ€™t get herself.

“Ask yourself this: are you in it for the long haul with your partner? Obviously, youโ€™d want the gift to have more of a special meaning if so,” she says.

You definitely wonโ€™t go wrong with our top pick โ€” a spa gift card she can use to pamper herself in honor of her special day.

For even more birthday-friendly ideas, we suggest:

Tickets to an event

Birthdays are a celebration, and going to fun events like concerts, ballets, plays and other performances can make someoneโ€™s birthday even more fun. A Stubhub gift card will translate to a fun evening out for your boyfriendโ€™s mom, on you.

Bath Goodies

Following along with the birthday indulgence theme, you canโ€™t go wrong with upscale bath products. Since pre-packaged bath sets rarely impress, make your own luxurious gift basket with these De-stress Salts from Aromatika, a moisture-infused Lollia Bubble Bath and PraPra Natural Loofah, emphasis on the โ€œah.โ€

What should I get my boyfriendโ€™s mom for Christmas?

The holiday season can be stressful when you donโ€™t know what to get for the people on your list. When it comes to your boyfriendโ€™s mom, just follow our Christmas gift guidelines: make it seasonal, sweet or savory.

Seasonal Gifts
Ornaments, keepsakes and other festive items are always great holiday gifts. We suggest this understated yet elegant wreath by Lights4Fun Inc. Itโ€™s ideal for use indoors and out, and it will complement her other decor.

Sweet Gifts
Chocolate and sweets, especially around the holidays, make foolproof gifts, so try our favorite Belgian chocolate truffles from New Yorkโ€™s Bonnie and Pop, complete with chocolates, caramels, mints and other treats.

Savory Gifts
Savory snack baskets are another good option for the holiday season โ€” they are either a hostess gift or a casual โ€œMerry Christmasโ€ if youโ€™re just getting to know your boyfriendโ€™s mom. We love the Milliard Ultimate Cheese Gift Basket, which she can pair with her favorite glass of wine (that you can also buy).

Should you get your boyfriendโ€™s mom a Motherโ€™s Day gift?

If youโ€™re wondering whether or not to get your boyfriendโ€™s mom a Motherโ€™s Day gift, the first thing to ask yourself is how serious your relationship is.

If you see your boyfriend's mom as a future mother-in-law, then get her a Motherโ€™s Day present, Sassoon says.

She suggests writing your boyfriend's mom a sweet note, “without professing fangirl love to her.”

The following scenarios might make it appropriate to buy her a gift for Motherโ€™s Day:

  • You and your boyfriend are soon-to-be engaged
  • You have met your boyfriendโ€™s mom multiple times and have become close with her
  • You are going to see her at a Motherโ€™s Day-specific function, such as a brunch or party
  • Your boyfriendโ€™s mom has recently become a grandmother to a new baby in the family

Flowers or chocolates make great Motherโ€™s Day gifts if youโ€™re on the fence about whether you should get something for your boyfriendโ€™s mom.

“You can create that special bond and relationship in these moments, while remaining ‘chill,'” Sassoon says.

Our culture tells us that women are either virtuous madonnas or filthy whores, but never one and the same. Many women I meet struggle with their desire for a full, happy sex life โ€” not to mention screamin libido after they become moms โ€” with the pressure to shield our children from that side of ourselves.

Mom and Kardashian family member Kylie Jenner told The Independent:

โ€œMotherhood and sexuality can coexist and just because you embrace your sexuality doesn't mean you have loose morals or you're not a good mother. You can be sexy and still be a badass mum.”

While many factors play into how horny you are after giving birth โ€” whether you nurse, the ease of your birth, stitches โ€” some research finds that moms are plenty horny and have lots of sex. For others, desire drops for a while, and that can fall into patterns described as HSDD in women, which is more common than most people realize. My personal research as well as hearing from tens of thousands of moms over the years found that after a breakup or divorce, women are often really horny and enjoy their newfound sex lives.

Single mom and sex, why it is better.

Bottom line for single moms and sex: Recognize you have needs and desires

Single mom and sex, why it is better.

When you feel comfortable with your body, let go of past hang-ups, and are less critical of your partner โ€“ thatโ€™s when stuff gets good.

Plus, thereโ€™s no pressure to have babies.

There is something amazing and magical that happens when women divorce. They get beautiful. And they get horny.

It's no coincidence these two things go hand-in-hand. Or that they follow divorce. No matter how contentious or acrimonious or downright explosively miserable the end of your marriage was, being divorced is better. It always is. It was sad. It sucked. Now it's better.

Here is why:

After divorce, you feel alive again

When you finally sell off the engagement ring, that heavy, nasty weight of your ex leaves and you realize that you will survive and that life does go on, all of a sudden the sun starts to shine a little brighter. You start to notice the different shades of green of the leaves in that tree that has been outside your house for years and years. Your children seem unbelievably wonderful, and your own reflection in the mirror starts to not look so horrible. It is as if those cracks of light inside of you are now on the outside. And everything about you โ€” on the inside and the outside โ€” everything is better.

And the men. The men! All of a sudden, you start to notice that there are men in the world. Not just people with hair on their arms who smell different that we do. They are men who have bodies and hands and deep voices that offer compliments and eyes โ€” eyes. Eyes that look at you and make you realize that those men are thinking things. Things about you. And that makes you think those things about yourself, too. And about those men. And those men? They're everywhere.

Donโ€™t be a helicopter mom: Overprotective parents can hurt their kids

Sex can finally be just about pleasure.

And sooner or later you find ways to be with those men. On dates, and in bed. And you cannot believe how much better it was than the last time around. The last time you were in your 20s! You were silly and looking for a husband and had an agenda!

This time? Who cares!?

Well, you care โ€” about everything. About all those feelings and the touching and the joy and the thrill and that passion and the love. Love wasn't this great last time, was it? Could it have gotten better? And yet you care about nothing. None of those things that were on your list. You have those things yourself โ€” the kids and the house and the career. You start to see the spots in yourself that a man can fill. And you start to see men in different ways. Because you are different.

5 tips for dating after divorce

Men are better after divorce, too.

There is no speculating this time, no guessing about what he might look like in middle age, or whether he will fulfill all those dazzling plans he lays out, or whether he has the capacity for love and friendship and joy. Because now they have track records and portfolios. Of life. And you shop for them, and try them on and enjoy them.  That is the thing about being divorced and dating. You enjoy men. Because you enjoy yourself. And life is full and secure like it wasn't before. And what is more beautiful than that?

Nothing breaks my heart more than a woman who cannot be without a man. That personality is always rife with desperation, bad decisions and alienating others who love her best. Never a good look.

Even if you are not prone to the dramatics of partnering up ASAP, you may feel like a loser because you are not in a relationship.

It is normal to feel sad and lonely if you don't have a boy- or girlfriend. (It can also feel horny, but that is a slightly different topic โ€” don't get those confused!)

In this episode, I share why being single is such an incredible opportunity you should not squander.

It doesn't have to be forever, but if you couple-up right away, you miss out on so many opportunities for personal growth, a new adventure, learning so much about yourself, others around you, and what your next relationship might be.

Mom bod and sex after motherhood

Worried about dating with your mom bod? From my book, The Kickass Single Mom:

If you are like me, all that hard-knock life that you just lived through made you a better person. And better people just donโ€™t give a crap about things like cellulite or perfectly minty breath. You also donโ€™t care so much about whether your partnerโ€™s back is furry, or his gut paunchy, or his head dome-y. Maybe youโ€™re not quite there yet on any of these fronts, and that is OK. I address this later on.

For many moms, including myself, motherhood freed me to connect with my sexuality in incredible ways. After all, having a baby is all about bodies- my body swelling and birthing and nursing another human body. I found a sensuality in those years being pregnant and breastfeeding for the sake of another person. I found acceptance, too. Along with the beauty and power of child birth is pain, and excreting body fluids in front of others, and paying very close attention to what both my body felt, as well as being in tune with another personโ€™s body โ€” sensibilities that were then ignited in new and different ways when I connect with men.

Also, I stopped giving such a crap about things that used to stand between me and very powerful sex. Kids โ€” and getting them into the world โ€” involve people pooping and peeing on and near you. You likely pooped and peed in front of other people. And there was lots of unabashed nudity โ€” all in the name of arguably the most gorgeous thing in the world (which, you can argue is either a baby, or sex).

Earlier in my life, I was a little self-conscious about my small, banana boobs with their flat nipples โ€” my college roommate would tease me about my โ€˜bologna nips.โ€™ But those banana-bologna boobs nursed two gorgeous babies who immediately flourished into deliciously fat, healthy little monkeys would I could not be more delighted to take some credit for, thanks to my awesome breasts. Suddenly, I loved my banana-bologna boobs!

Ultimately, however, I am here to tell you that men just donโ€™t give a crap. They are just not that picky. Sure, some guys are really, really into Barbie bodies, and maybe they are gym rats or athletes and their partnerโ€™s physique is paramount in dating. That is fine. There are millions of men, most of them middle-aged people who donโ€™t look as great as they did 20 years ago. They are worried that their T-shirt shows off their man-boobs, or what you will think about their arms when youโ€™re making out with him and squeeze his biceps.

Also: many men struggle with impotence. A lot more than the last time you dated. In fact, this is a huge, new problem that I want to write a whole book about (culprits: porn addiction, feminism, and side effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals so many people take). So while you are worried about your muffin top when youโ€™re riding him, he is terrified his dick wonโ€™t work. His fear is worse.

After divorce as a single mom, you can experiment sexually

Recently single mom friend Sarah and I were IMing about how we prefer men who are aggressive in bed.

โ€œI'm the CEO of my entire life!โ€ Sarah complained. โ€œDo you know how hot it is to let someone else take over for 20 minutes?โ€

โ€œIt's not just in bed โ€“ give me a vacation from my life for a while,โ€ I responded. I was referencing my weekend date โ€” a guy I met on OKCupid named Lou who I have pretty much nothing in common with but proved to be the perfect Saturday night activity.

Best dating sites for single moms โ€” and how to set up a successful dating profile.

For the past few months I've been in a dateless funk fueled by disappointment that a love interest didn't pan out and a long, grey, life-filled winter. Despite being little of what I am looking for in the long-term, this Sicilian-born, Harley-riding electrical engineer from Queens charmed me with a witty profile, flirty and articulate messages and pics that suggested โ€” quite accurately, I found โ€” a darling smile and a 6'3โ€ณ body built like a brick.

Hotness aside, I knew Lou was just what my mental health needed when he called to arrange the date. He would drive to my neighborhood, so, per protocol, I promised to text him a location to meet. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ he said in a loud, friendly, Queens accent. โ€œI'm picking you up and I'm taking you out!โ€

Music to my ears!

Let me back up here. If I had to describe myself โ€” which one is prone to do when she finds herself juxtaposed with a Lou โ€” it would be that I'm a New York intellectual who dates more or less the same. My boyfriends tend to be writers and filmmakers interested in lefty politics and sustainable urban development. Lots of skinny jeans, the occasional fedora and dates that involve plenty of polite negotiating and triangulating a mutually convenient meeting point. Lou is Republican who wore a gold crucifix under his slim-cut waffle shirt, and he picked me up and took me out.

When I got in the car, I immediately took to Lou's big, warm vibe. He took my hand and kissed my cheek hello, cracking a giant, handsome smile. โ€œWhat's this?โ€ he said. โ€œYou're the only woman I know who doesn't do her nails!โ€ And off we went in his pickup all the way across Queens to a neon-lit Mexican restaurant with valet parking.

I could write a whole post on the beauty of going out with men you have no interest in dating long-term. If you don't care if you ever see the guy again, somehow everyone is freer to be themselves โ€” and enjoy each other more. If I was looking at Lou through relationship goggles, I might have bristled when describing his most recent relationship with a woman who moved into her new house by transporting one dining chair per day in her car.

Life after divorce โ€” 3 things you can do now to move on

โ€œLook, sometimes I like to be a man, you know?โ€ Lou said. โ€œI told her, โ€˜Listen, I'll come by Saturday with three of my friends and we'll move you in one day.' But she said I was being too pushy. Women!โ€ Instead of recoiling in feminist disgust, my interest was piqued. What other ways did he like to be a man? And was he going to show me on our singular date?

That's the thing with the Lous of the world, Sarah and I agreed. We love that they take over plans for the evening, and then take over our bodies for the night. When you are an independent woman with lots of responsibilities, many men assume that we want to carry out that strong role all the time. But I need to feel like a woman, and the times I enjoy that most are when I am with a man. If I am being honest with myself, being a woman means โ€“ to a degree โ€“ being passive. And that requires a man who is โ€“ to a degree โ€“ the alpha.

Lou is not going to be my boyfriend. My boyfriend will be โ€œan artsy-fartsy guyโ€  (as Lou described my type) with whom I will triangulate our first date. I loved hanging out with Lou, the macho way he relieved me of any responsibility for the evening, the easy way I fell into passively following his lead, crucifix dangling in my face much of the night.  But I am a woman with an opinion or 50, and a clear vision for my role in the world. I can't imagine settling for anything less than intimacy with someone who is my partner, my equal. Can that person be someone who is totally dominant? Could I ever be happy being consistently passive?

โ€œYou're fun to hang out with,โ€ Lou said, pulling the covers up to his chin. โ€œDo you like to spoon? Roll over, let me spoon you.โ€

And I did.

When intimacy finally felt exciting again instead of exhausting, I understood why products like CBD-infused lube are becoming part of honest conversations about pleasure and wellbeing.

Best single mom movies and TV shows

Sex and dating in middle age are actually a lot like dating as a teenager

One Sunday morning I had brunch with my brother Josh and sister-in-law Susan. They're in their early 30s, don't have kids, stay out late, and sleep in on weekends.

Susan grilled me about my date from the night before while my little brother pretended he'd lost his hearing.

โ€œWe went for Ethiopian food in the Village and then he drove me home,โ€ I said.

โ€œWhy didn't you invite him up?โ€ Susan asked.

โ€œAre you crazy? The kids and the babysitter were there.โ€

โ€œSo what, he got to second base in the car and then you were home by midnight?โ€

โ€œBasically, yes!โ€

โ€œOh my God. That is so funny. And that's so early!โ€

I felt a little defensive about my single mommy lifestyle. Because, really, what can you do? But then I realized that dating as a single parent is kind of horrible and awesome in the same way that being a teenager is horrible and awesome.

In fact, while necking in his four-door sedan (car seats in back) my single-dad love interest and I were laughing about all the ways that dating as a parent is the same as dating in high school:

It can be tricky to find alone time, everyone's finances are limited, and you often have to answer to the scrutiny of parental figures. After all, had I ushered my date upstairs Saturday, I'd have had to face Karen, our beloved long-time babysitter who serves as a surrogate grandmother to my kids and me. What would she think?

My friend Sarah is a professional single mom whose ex lives out of state โ€” drastically limiting her child-free hours, and forcing her to turn to babysitting from her mother in order to get laid. Tapping her inner teenager, Sarah always lies to her mom about her whereabouts when she goes out with men, lest she get โ€œthe third degree about whether he'd make a good father.โ€

โ€œI don't want to lie, but I also don't want to deal with the judgment,โ€ Sarah told me. And so she obeys her mom's rulesโ€“or else she pays the price. โ€œI told one guy I went out with that we'd be skipping dinner and going straight to sex because I had to be home by 11:30,โ€ she said. In my case, I was acutely aware that every minute spent making out in that car also came at a price โ€” the cold, hard hourly rate paid to Karen.

The upside of all this finagling and sneaking and financing is that it collectively mounts the lusty, torturous tension lacking in readily-available sex. Like, for example, in marriage. In other words, sex as a single mom can be unbelievably hot. Which was probably not the case when we were in high school.

But Sarah and I agreed that sex isn't the only part of dating that makes us feel like we're in 10th grade again. I nearly didn't publish this post. I mean, what if my date reads it and feels betrayed or embarrassed and doesn't call me again? I mean, OMG, I would totally DIE, cuz I like totally like him! But like, would it be my fault? I mean, he knows I blog about my life or whatever, so, like, whatever!?

Why is dating better as a single mom?

The woman gets to know the man she's talking to. There are many reasons dating a single mom is better, such as they are more loving, and more confident.

Here are nine reasons why I believe dating as a single woman is better:

  1. Single moms already have their kids
  2. Single moms are kinder to themselves
  3. Single mothers are a stronger, happier version of themselves
  4. Single moms are sexier
  5. Single mothers accept their bodies
  6. Single mothers have become the women they're meant to be
  7. Single moms are not that annoying, needy girlfriend
  8. Single mothers are less susceptible to wasting time on the wrong guy
  9. Sex as a single mom is better

Tips for dating after divorce

  1. Recognize your fears as normal, but commit to dating anyway.
  2. Rest assured: Your kids will be fine
  3. Download a dating app and get to it!

1. Single moms already have their kids.

The Mom spends time with her two beautiful kids.

Now you can date for you.

When I was dating in my twenties, I was looking for a husband with a healthy set of testicles with which to sire children.

I have them now. Two awesome, healthy ones, in fact. I can check that off my life to-do list and look for a man for love or companionship or sex โ€“ or all three.

The pressure is off as a single mom. Get started today by checking out my post on the best dating apps to use as a single mom!

2. Single moms are kinder to themselves…

The woman looks at peace with herself. Divorce is devastating and it taught sigle moms to forgive and be kinder to themselves.

โ€ฆand that makes you a delight to be around.

Divorce is a bummer.

So many disappointments, self-blame, and broken hearts. To move on, you must forgive.

Forgive yourself. Forgive your ex. Forgive the friends and in-laws who you felt deserted you.

This kindness bleeds into your other relationships โ€” including with your own confidence. Since becoming a single mother I have found that I am so much less judgmental of myself.

I am also far less critical of other people, including men. And guess what? They seem to like me more for it! Imagine that.

5 tips for Self-Care

3. Single mothers are a stronger, happier version of themselves.

The woman feels happy spending time with her child.

Being a single mom means that you have been through at least three life-altering experiences.

  1. You became a parent, which blew your mind, heart, and life in incredible ways.
  2. Youโ€™ve found yourself single after a serious long-term relationship.
  3. You've faced the reason-defying triumphs that are required of single motherhood.

Whether the single part was by way of divorce, breakup, death or choice, it was a big deal, and that changed you.

You survived that, and not only are you better for it โ€“ youโ€™re sexier for it.

Still feel like you have work to do on yourself before you start dating? I understand. Check out our review of BetterHelp.

4. Single moms are sexier!

The woman feels happy playing with her son. The confidence and happiness brought by the experiences of being a single mom makes single moms sexier.

Confidence, a full heart, and life experience all equal being a richer, fuller person.

People are attracted to these single-mom qualities in a real, meaningful way.

Especially the people you want to attract, aka awesome men.

5. Single mothers accept their bodies.

Youโ€™ve carried and birthed and nursed a baby.

You know what an amazing thing the female body is.

It's imperfections? Who cares!

Age and childbearing have allowed you to enjoy your body for all it has to offer. Including sex.

6. Single mothers have become the women they're meant to be.

The woman looks happy and contented with who she is now.

When I met my husband in my mid-twenties, I was still struggling to make my way professionally.

My longest friendships were still forming, and I was still figuring out what was most important to me.

Now, I have reached many milestones in my career, relationships, and inner life.

I know who am, and what I want. Which makes dating about 1,000 times easier.

Dating a widower: 6 things you need to know

7. Single moms are not like that annoying, needy girlfriend.

Women with kids have a whole lot of responsibilities. Our time is limited.

How could we be clingy? When we do have time for boyfriends, we make the very most of it. This is one thing that younger men looking to date older women tell me they like about that arrangement.

Throw a fit because he didnโ€™t text for 3 days?

Please. I have lunches to make and doctor appointments to schedule.

8. Single mothers are less susceptible to wasting time on the wrong guy.

Because you have less time. Busy single moms have fewer lonely nights to fill, fewer dinners eaten alone.

There is less temptation to piddle away hours waiting on losers to commit just because youโ€™re lonely.

Time is precious, and efficient moms know that the best way to spend time with a man is truly enjoying a really, really great one.

9. Sex as a single mom is better.

When you feel comfortable with your body, let go of past hang-ups, and are less critical of your partner โ€“ thatโ€™s when stuff gets good, including single-mom sex.

Tips for dating after divorce

Not sure about getting out there again, and to be dating as a single mom? Keep reading below, and check out these tips for dating after divorce:

1. Recognize your fears as normal, but commit to dating anyway.

These fears might include:

  • Being unattractive with your age/mom bod
  • Having too much emotional baggage to attract a quality man
  • Traumatizing your kids
  • Getting your heart broken

Trust me: used-up, lumpy, wounded moms meet quality men every day of the week. Take it from me! Remember: For every divorced mom on the market, there is a lumpy, wounded single dad! Embrace your humanity โ€” and his.

2. Rest assured: Your kids will be fine

Just don't date for the sake of looking for a husband, and for the love of God, do not move in any time soon. From my bestselling book, The Kickass Single Mom (Penguin):

One of the most-cited studies about single mothers is the harm caused to children by the instability of boyfriends moving in and out of their home and lives. Leading researcher on single mother families, Sarah S. McLalanahan of Princeton University, found that children raised by single mothers (who tend to be younger and poorer than married moms) are more likely to struggle academically, because these single moms have less stable relationships with their childrenโ€™s fathers, and men overall, with new boyfriends and their children moving in and out of the family home. It is fatherlessness and poverty โ€” not divorce or separated families per se โ€” that put kids at risk.

McLalanahan writes:

We found that divorce and separation play a limited role in shaping childrenโ€™s cognitive abilities, such as language and mathematical skills, which are tested in conventional school examinations. Maternal education and poverty are much more important in this area. In contrast, family instability plays a much bigger role than mothersโ€™ education or poverty in the development of โ€œsocial-emotionalโ€ skills. For example, family instability has twice as much influence as poverty does on whether children develop aggressive behavior. It is on par with poverty in causing childhood anxiety and shyness.

This research is important, and I urge you to heed it. But do not let it scare you into celibacy, or shame you into sneaking or lying about your romantic life, or staying up late worrying that decisions that led to this point have sentenced your children to a crappy life.

Far from it.

Research highlighting mothersโ€™ relationship instability, which is within your control. The research is not about financially independent, unmarried moms who date a bunch of people without committing to them. The risks associated with โ€œpartner instabilityโ€ have little to do with men who do not live in your house, who are not automatically relegated a boyfriend, move in with his children, and other major life changes that come with serious, committed relationships.

The risk to negative outcomes for your kids, we can assume, plummets if you have a healthy attitude about romance, and are financially stable enough that you are not compulsively tempted to co-habit out of financial destitution, rather than healthy commitment to a shared future with a man or woman you love.

3. Download a dating app and get to it!

Ready to start dating? Looking for a serious relationship? Our No. 1 recommendation is eharmony, which is consistently rated the most trusted dating site, and is designed specifically for those looking for meaningful, long-term connections. A Better Business Bureau rating, and claims โ€œEvery day, an average of 438 singles marry a match they found on eharmony.โ€ 3-month free guarantee.

If you are ready to get out there, but need some online dating advice, here you go!

  1. Where you live. Each city has its own vibe on each dating site for single moms. For example, OKCupid is among the most popular in New York City where I live, and is the best resource for quality dating. But in other cities, OKC is used mostly for hooking up. Ask your friends. Ask men you date. Check out a few.
  2. Each site has different types of men as members. Itโ€™s just like looking for a job โ€“ you may have your resume posted on Monster.com, Indeed, and a couple of industry-specific sites. Again, check out a few that others recommend, use their free trials or promotions, and see which has the best selection for you. Likely, you will keep a few accounts going at the same time. Sometimes, more is more!
  3. Donโ€™t give up too soon. Dating is about dating โ€“ meeting new people, learning about yourself, your tastes and needs at this time of your life. Just because a date doesnโ€™t lead to marriage does not make it a disaster! Did you have fun? Meet a nice person? Learn something about yourself? Consider it a success!
  4. There is nothing unique about the men who date online. I often hear women say: โ€œI'm giving up on online dating apps! All the guys there are losers!โ€ That is like saying: โ€œI'm going to cut off all my friends who are on Instagram! Only losers are on Instagram!โ€ After all, online dating is 100% normal and commonplace, nothing to be ashamed of and NOT an activity unique to any particular type of person. If online dating isn't working for you now, take a break, assess how you might approach dating in general, and then try again in a few months.
  5. Online dating is what you put into it. If you want to meet honest people, be honest yourself. Here is a deep-dive into why you should be totally honest on your dating profile about your salary and income, as well as whether you have kids
  6. Have fun! The better your attitude about dating and meeting men, the better your experience โ€” no matter the outcome.

The internet is just a medium for meeting men. A tool for connecting with other humans. Like Facebook or Instagram, but with more potential for sex, romance and STDs (kidding / not kidding).

Keep at it, try new things and keep an open mind. Also: HAVE FUN!

In the meantime, you can also consider dating apps as simply another social media. I did.
