With gas and food prices skyrocketing, many economists believe we will enter a recession in 2023 โ€” or may already be in one.

But not every business will be slammed by an economic downturn.

If youโ€™re ready to take the plunge into entrepreneurship, starting a recession-proof business now can help you survive a recession and make great money in any economy.

What is a recession-proof business?

What is a recession-proof business?

A woman at a counter selling food in a post about 7 recession-proof businesses to start now.

A recession-proof business will survive a period of time when the economy slows down, there are fewer jobs, and prices for homes, cars, and everyday goods increase (aka a recession). During a recession, a lot of businesses suffer because people typically spend and make less money.

Past recessions have forced many small businesses to close, but there have historically and statistically been certain industries that survive โ€” and even thrive โ€” in a bad economy.

What makes a business truly recession-proof? Our research, which we unpack below, found that businesses that fulfill basic needs like food, shelter, and water tend to be recession-proof, including grocery stores, plumbing, and HVAC companies.

Other recession-proof businesses might offer specialized services. For example, businesses like bookkeeping and accounting will always be necessary because individuals, corporations and small business need to pay taxes and manage finances during a recession.

Keep reading for details about the best recession-proof businesses, or read our guides on 74 side hustles, best at-home careers, and recession-proof jobs and recession-proof businesses.

Recession-proof business ideas

Before you start any business, there will be additional expenses related to creating a legal business structure, registering your business, purchasing insurance coverage, and acquiring necessary licenses and permits. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offers a business guide that goes into more detail.

Before you launch any of these businesses, protect cash flow with strong client service agreements, vendor terms, and NDAs tailored for tough markets. Partnering with a business contract lawyer can ensure your commercial contracts include precise scopes of work and deliverables, milestone-based invoicing, late-fee and chargeback policies, limits of liability, and termination/force majeure clauses. Solid contracts reduce disputes, help you get paid on time, and give you remedies if projects stall or customers default during a downturn.

Here are some of the best recession-proof businesses you can start now:

1. Home repair services

A plumber fixes a sink. Home service businesses are considered fairly recession-proof.

Harvard research found that people in the United States spend $400 billion on home improvement each year.

Plumbing businesses are considered recession-proof since most people canโ€™t wait out a water leak or clogged toilet. Similarly, electricians and heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) businesses provide repairs for necessary utilities like electric, temperature control, and refrigeration systems.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that construction and extraction jobs (including plumbers, electricians, and HVACR technicians) will grow 6% annually from 2020 to 2030, which is about 400,000 new jobs.

How to get started: Trades like construction, plumbing, electrical, and HVACR typically require an apprenticeship that can take up to 5 years, so you wonโ€™t be able to start your own business immediately. Some folks also attend trade school programs in addition to on-the-job training, which can cost $1,000-$30,000 depending on the program length and fees.

You will also need to obtain proper licensing and certifications required in your state to operate your business during your training. Once you have the experience and credentials, starting your own repair service business will require typical business and insurance costs, plus tool costs that can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars depending on what repairs you offer.

Earning potential: According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median salary for plumbers is $59,880, electricians is $60,040, and HVACR technicians is $48,630. The highest 10% of plumbers earn more than $99,920, electricians more than $99,800, and HVACR technicians more than $78,210.

2. Child care

A child playing in a daycare. Child care is a recession-proof business.

People need child care to work no matter what, though an economic downturn can shake up where the jobs are. During the 2001 recession, for-profit child care chains like KinderCare Learning Centers and Primrose Schools opened more locations and actually grew their businesses, while private operators struggled when parents got laid off and government subsidies shrank.

How to get started: Sites like Care.com can allow you to connect with people who need nannies and sitters without the large overhead costs needed to start a daycare franchise. You donโ€™t necessarily need formal training, but taking CPR and first aid training can allow you to charge more for your services. CPR certifications typically last for two years, with training and materials costing between $65-$83. If you start a child care business at home, consider additional costs of food, toys, and other supplies.

Earning potential:. According to Care.comโ€™s Cost of Care Survey, nannies earned an average of $694 a week and day care centers charged $221 a week to care for one child in 2021. But even though nannies may make more initially, an at-home child care business has the potential to increase take-home weekly pay by scaling up with more children, staff and even multiple locations.

The governmentโ€™s earning reports project higher earning potential for child care workers. BLS notes that the highest 10% of child care workers, in general, earn more than $17.99 an hour/$719.60 a week for full-time. For child daycare service workers, specifically,  BLS reports median earning of  $11.43 an hour/$457.20 a week for full-time.

3. Accounting and bookkeeping services

Learn about 7 recession-proof businesses to start now to earn more money.

Accounting service revenue has also steadily grown in the United States since 2010 โ€“ and did not dip during the 2020 recession. According to Statista research, accounting services revenue was about $126 billion in 2019 and $128 billion in 2020.

In economic downturns, there is still money to budget and taxes to be paid. Even in tight financial situations, people still seek experts for guidance, even if it will cost them some initial overhead. This makes bookkeeping and accounting services very recession-proof.

Accounting businesses can also help people understand complex financial situations and laws that arise during a recession, while also helping individuals and companies correctly prep and file their taxes. Businesses will also always need bookkeepers to help track finances โ€“ and arguably may need them more when finances are tight during a recession.

How to get started: You can start a bookkeeping business in under a year by taking online training courses via sites like Udemy, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers (NACPB), or Bookkeepers.com. These training courses can cost anywhere from $75 – $400.

To start your own accounting business and operate as an accountant, you typically need a  bachelor's degree in accounting or business. This requires time and money that may not be feasible before an impending recession.

Earning potential: According to BLS, the median salary for bookkeepers is $45,560, and $61,980 for the highest earners. The median salary for accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services is $77,080. For accountants and auditors specifically, BLS notes the highest 10% can earn more than $128,970 per year.

4. Cleaning service

A woman wipes a dirty countertop. Cleaning services are a recession-proof business to start.

People likely wonโ€™t pay for home cleaners during a recession, but certain buildings will always require cleaning services. So starting a commercial cleaning business can be a smart and recession-proof idea.

Places like hospitals, hotels, offices, banks, and classrooms must stay clean no matter the economy. Some may outsource cleaning services, which also allows them to cut costs. So even in a bad economy, cleaning service businesses will have work.

How to get started: You do not need a formal education to start a cleaning service, but itโ€™s a good idea to have certifications and training that proves you understand proper sanitation guidelines. Some states may also require you have certain licenses depending on what locations you clean. Training and certifications can cost you hundreds to a few thousand dollars. CMI Cleaning 101 from ISSA (The International Sanitary Supply Association) is a good place to start. Additionally, you can expect to pay $200-$500 for cleaning supplies and equipment.

For commercial accounts, exterior cleaning (sidewalks, entrances, bins) often calls for a pressure washer. When bidding jobs, match PSI and flow to surfaces and frequency, and invest in durable and efficient pressure washers to reduce downtime and water use while delivering professional results. Electric units are suitable for indoor/low-noise sites; gas models offer mobility and higher PSI for heavy buildup. Pair with surface cleaners, foam cannons, and proper nozzles, and maintain pumps and hoses per manufacturer guidance to extend service life and keep operating costs predictable.

Earning potential: According to BLS, janitors and building cleaners earn a median wage of $14.31 an hour and the top earners made $22.26 an hour. So running your own cleaning business could help you earn between $29,765 and $46,300 a year, depending on your rates and number of clients.

5. Delivery service

A delivery man drops off a package. Delivery services are considered a recession-proof business.

Mail doesnโ€™t stop in a recession. Courier and delivery services for products and food are tasks companies will still need, which can make these recession-proof businesses.

Many couriers also branch into hot-food delivery via ghost kitchens or food trucks, which stay busy when dine-in slows. To keep startup costs low, outfit a small commercial kitchen with efficient flat-top cooktops; these restaurant grills and commercial grillers provide heavy-duty griddles and grill plates suitable for compact prep spaces, helping you produce burgers, tacos, breakfast items, and more for delivery-only menus.

How to get started: Besides business and insurance costs, you just need a vehicle and a standard driver's license to start a delivery business. If youโ€™re planning on delivering a large number of packages, buying a used or new delivery sprinter van can run you $10,000-$42,000. You can lease a delivery van to cut costs down and free up cash. TrueCarโ€™s average 36-month lease payment for a newer Ford Transit Crew Van is about $768 a month with a $2,000 downpayment. Some companies also have their own driver programs that allow you to operate as an independent business.

If youโ€™re considering buying instead of leasing, you can find Ford Transit Crew Vans on AutosToday.

Currently, Amazon has a Delivery Service Partner (DSP) program that helps you start your own Amazon delivery business with a start-up cost of $10,000, plus some additional expenses for training and starting your business that could cost you upwards of $30,000.

Earning potential: BLS notes delivery truck drivers earn a median yearly salary of $36,660. ZipRecruiter reports that independent delivery contractors earn an average of  $65,269 a year, with top earners taking home $152,500 a year.

6. Auto Repair

A mechanic works on a car. Auto repair is considered a recession-proof business.

People still drive their cars during a recession, and vehicles will always need repairs and general maintenance. Itโ€™s also common to see more older vehicles on the road during a recession.

Driving older vehicles helps folks cut costs if they canโ€™t afford to buy a new vehicle, even though they will have to pay some repair costs. This makes auto repair businesses a very recession-proof business.

The new car shortage is also going to keep people in older vehicles. Some car manufacturers cut down production due to a shortage of car microchips, which was caused by faults in chip shipping and production during the pandemic. Auto parts retailers like AutoZone, Oโ€™Reilly Auto Parts, and Genuine Parts also did well in 2021 following the last recession โ€“ illustrating a need for auto parts to make repairs.

How to get started: Many people enter postsecondary education programs through tech schools to get proper training in automotive repair. These can take 6 months to 2 years to complete and cost $5,000 to $20,000. Depending on your training program, you may also need to pay a few hundred dollars for necessary EPA certification testing and optional National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications. Being ASE-certified is an industry standard that gives you credentials to back up your knowledge.

Starting a mobile mechanic business or running your business from a home garage (both will still require proper business registrations and licenses outlined in your state), will help you keep start-up costs lower compared to buying a brick and mortar store. To keep tool and equipment costs lower you can also focus on quick repairs like brake services, air filter replacements, oil changes, tire maintenance, battery replacement, and under-the-hood replacements like spark plugs and timing belts. Depending on what you choose to repair, your initial investment can run you anywhere from $10,000 – $50,000.

Earning potential: According to BLS, the median salary for automotive service technicians and mechanics is $46,880. The highest 10% earned more than $75,100 a year, which you could make as a small, one-person shop. For mobile mechanics specifically, ZipRecruiter reported an average annual salary of $63,343.

7. Reseller

A woman sells clothes live online. Resale is considered a recession-proof business.

People will still need essential clothing items in a recession, especially for growing kids, and they will be looking for deals when money is tight. This could make an online resale business recession-proof, especially since past recessions have seen resale sales and buyers increase.

Thrifting and resale culture has been on the rise, with ThredUpโ€™s 2021 Resale Report noting 33 million additional consumers started buying secondhand in 2020. According to a 2009 National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops (NARTS) survey via Reuters, 64.1% of U.S. resale stores surveyed increased sales by nearly 31% from second quarter 2008 to 2009. Specifically, books and clothing sales did well.

The baby care products market is also estimated to rise from $67 billion to $88 billion between 2020 and 2026, which will result in more used items up for grabs. Additionally, selling your gold, diamonds, jewelry, and silver could be lucrative since prices are at record highs.

For HVAC professionals looking to streamline their workflow, using an HVAC invoice generator can be especially helpful for efficiently estimating jobs and managing invoicing

How to get started: You can start selling used items and clothing to pawnbrokers and consignment shops. But youโ€™ll find more flexibility, and potentially more earnings, by selling through online retailers like Mercari, Poshmark, and eBay. You will also want to spend time sourcing items if you donโ€™t have things to resell. Check Craigslist, thrift shops, Facebook Marketplace, and yard sales for items and brands that are in demand.

Potential earnings: Earning will really vary on the items you sell and how much time you spend on your business. ZipRecruiter reports that the majority of resellers make between $33,000 and $77,000 a year. Online resellers specifically make an average of $69,655 a year.

Bottom line: Why start a business during a recession?

Starting your own business in 2023 may seem pretty daunting with news of another impending recession. But starting your own business during a recession has some perks:

  1. More opportunities. During a recession, there are often state- and federally-funded programs introduced to help business owners secure funding and start a business.
  2. Thereโ€™s less competition. When the economy is struggling, typical start-up funds may also be limited since investors are less likely to invest in new business proposals. This can prevent others from starting new businesses.
  3. Less start-up costs. During a recession, some manufacturers and vendors will decrease costs to stay competitive. Real estate prices also decrease during recessions. This means you might have fewer business costs related to starting a business.
  4. People need jobs. Starting a business allows you to increase employment opportunities, and more people are looking for jobs you might need to fill. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 8 million jobs were lost between 2007 and 2010.
  5. You can be your own boss. If youโ€™re worried about your current job during a recession, the stakes might already be high. This could be an opportunity to be in charge of your own business and have even more success when the economy returns to normal.

8 things to know about dating a cougar

Learn what it's like to date a cougar.

If you're interested in dating an older woman, whether youโ€™re just looking to hookup or you want to seriously date, here's what you need to know:

1. Thereโ€™s a reason you want to date her.

โ€œA cougar is a selective, empowered woman who does not feel the need to conform to societyโ€™s expectations for how older women should behave,โ€ says Dr. Sarah Hill, evolutionary psychologist and author of the book โ€œThis is Your Brain on Birth Control.โ€

Theyโ€™re typically women in their late 40s who date men at least 10 years younger, according to Urban Dictionary. This Reddit thread also confirms cougars are at least 40, with women in their 30s qualifying as โ€œpumas:โ€

โ€œIt is believed these preferences have deep evolutionary roots, having been inherited by contemporary women because it promoted the survival and reproductive success of our female ancestors and their children,โ€ Hill says.

Because older men are generally more established, earn higher salaries, and have higher social status than younger men, it makes sense women would often desire older partners.

Those qualities are what make them so appealing to younger men, Hills says.

In a study published in the Journal of Sex Research, women ages 30 to 60 who had dated younger men revealed these sexual benefits of dating a younger man:

  1. Increased sexual stamina
  2. Relationship allowed them to embrace their sexual assertiveness
  3. Women could place greater importance on their own sexual pleasure

Suzanna Mathews, author of โ€œRevising Mrs. Robinson: Navigating Cougar-Cub Dating and Relationshipsโ€ and founder/head dating coach and matchmaker at The Date Maven, a matchmaking service, says there is also a novelty factor that comes with dating an older woman.

โ€œโ€˜Cougarโ€™ and โ€˜MILFโ€™ are some of the top-searched terms on Pornhub,โ€ Mathews says. โ€œThat indicates to me that there is a curiosity and a male fantasy there that's probably pretty common in the male brain.โ€

The Today Show recently did a report on the trend of older women dating younger men:

What real cubs have to say:

โ€œI like the idea of her having older kids and not wanting to deal with younger women wanting kids (I have a 5 year old daughter).โ€

โ€œDating women in their 20s leads to a lot of unnecessary drama. When I spent time with older women, it was easy. The sex was amazing, and I enjoyed their company.โ€

โ€œThey are simply more wise to the world, the โ€˜gamesโ€™ guys play and sex (usually). They want the same thing any woman does….love, admiration, respect, to feel comfortable in her man's arms.โ€

2. Thereโ€™s a reason she wants to date you, too.

For a lot of older women โ€” especially those who went through a divorce โ€” the desire to date a younger man is about hitting the reset button, Mathews says.

Dating a younger man tells the world, โ€œI'm sexy, I'm vibrant, I am appealing and attractive,โ€ she says. โ€œIt's about getting that swagger back for a lot of women.โ€

But some women might be hesitant to date a younger man. Mathews says sheโ€™s had to convince a few of her clients to be open to an age-gap relationship.

โ€œOne client I'm working with right now, she's in her late 30s and wants children. So she would have a good case to make for being open to dating a younger man. But she's had a lot of biases about how he's going to want to party, or he's going to want to play around, or he's not going to be able to be serious, or he's not going to be as emotionally available.โ€

Dating a cougar is all about helping her see you for the partner you can be โ€” make her laugh, support her, and be willing to follow her lead.

What real cougars have to say:

I love being a cougar
byu/rlroyal52 inCougarsAndCubs

โ€œI find the younger ones tend to be more open to letting you in their life and less rigid in their ways.โ€

โ€œMy husband is 7.5 years younger than I am. I found men who were older could often have some…less evolved ideas about relationships and were often VERY angry and bitter about dating and had some gross ideas and behaviors. It was a refreshing change to have someone hopeful and new to the dating world (he really hadn't dated as an adult).โ€

โ€œThis guy was handsome with sexual stamina. He craved adventure, freedom and fun.  He could create anything if he put his mind to it.  He didnโ€™t have children, ex-wives or property.  He didnโ€™t have attachments. He could have easily planted himself into my space and let that become our space without complications. Thatโ€™s what we enjoyed for a time. I could be myself with him, only better and more good looking, with a good looking guy in tow.โ€ – CamilleOnTheCoast

What real cubs have to say:

โ€œIโ€™m a guy dating a slightly older woman who is 53. She told me all the guys her age are either ready to retire to a rocking chair or they only want to date women in their 30s. She's very active and runs marathons, stays in shape, etc. It's been a nice match for us.โ€

3. Your priorities might be different.

Dating someone older poses unique challenges that come with an age-gap relationship, Mathews says.

For example, a woman in her 30s may be looking for someone to start a family, while a woman at 40 or 50 might already have kids and not want more (or never want kids). She might also be co-parenting with an ex.

โ€œMen in their 20s are still very much figuring out โ€˜Who am I? How do I want to be in this world? What's my purpose? What's my passion?โ€™” Mathews says. โ€œThey're still exploring what their life is going to look like.โ€

Of course, if the woman is in a reinvention stage, which often happens post-divorce, she might feel comfortable with that and be able to support it.

โ€œAnd If she's not in that stage, she may feel sort of like, โ€˜I don't want to have to twiddle my fingers while he figures out his identity and what he wants to do for a living,โ€™โ€ Mathews says.

If there are kids in the relationship, Mathews suggests following your partnerโ€™s lead on when and if she wants you to meet them.

โ€œIf the kids are kids or teenagers, they're going to perceive it differently and have different reactions to it than if they are little,โ€ Mathews says.

โ€œI asked him about kids one year into the relationship. He said he was too young. THEN, he got baby fever. So I ended up having my first child at an advanced maternal age. It wasnโ€™t easy or cheap. I had to do IVF.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve found that Iโ€™m better with men in their 20s who have been working for a few years rather than the ones who are still in college because at least working adults tend to be more mature and stable but still have the energy and fun of a younger man.โ€

4. Thereโ€™s no need to pretend to be something youโ€™re not.

She knows you are young and may still be growing as a lover and partner. You donโ€™t need to pretend otherwise โ€” she will see through it.

Great love involves romance, touch, time, and emotional reciprocity. She can likely navigate this with more authority than you, and that is OK.

Approach dating an older woman like you would any other relationship. Older women may have decades of relationship experience under their belts, but that doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re done figuring things out.

Mathews suggests asking your partner what sheโ€™s looking for in a relationship and also sharing your expectations.

“The more we try to meet someone else's emotional needs โ€” whether we're 20 or 60 โ€” the better chance we have of making a connection and becoming indispensable in their life,โ€ she says.

What real cougars have to say:

โ€œPlease donโ€™t try and emulate a โ€˜cool dude.โ€™ We are over that garbage. Be yourself. Show us you have a brain, that you have a heart. Most of us have had enough narcissistic immature men in our lives, and now weโ€™re looking for genuine and enthusiastic lovers. And for the love of God, please donโ€™t assume we are satisfied just because you are. You will rise above all others if you are attentive to our needs. And if youโ€™re not sure, ask.โ€

What real cubs have to say:

โ€œOne thing that surprised me was their understanding. They didn't impose on you with their age or claim to always be right due to them supposedly being more โ€˜matureโ€™ or โ€˜superior.โ€™ A major misconception about dating older women is that you're being told what to do or you're a boy toy. That is really not true. You can have beautiful memories together.โ€ โ€” Span Chen, founder of Thekarateblog

If you're online dating, learn what to write in your bio.

5. You might face judgments.

While age-gap relationships are a lot less taboo than they used to be, that doesn't mean your relationship will be without criticism from friends, family, and random strangers. The key is to stay resilient, Mathews says.

Couples can do that simply by letting the relationship speak for itself โ€” having good communication skills, having each otherโ€™s backs, and just striving for a happy and healthy partnership.

If that fails, talk with each other about what to say when people give you a hard time.

What real cougars have to say:

โ€œOverall, as a 45-year-old female, I find that I get along better with men that are easily up to 10 years younger than me. The first bias you need to overcome is your own. Make sure you shed any issues about how you may be perceived. As a couple, make sure you're both on the same page and talk this through with him. If the two of you as grown adults connect and it has the makings of a good relationship, stop overthinking.โ€

6. She will not want to play games.

An older woman is more likely to be upfront about what she wants in a partner. She probably doesn't have the time or the energy to play hard to get.

“I need transparency and openness from my suitors,” says Maxine F., 63, from Las Vegas, Nev. “I've reached the age where I'm transparent and open to new experiences, so I expect to receive the same.”

A cougar has heard every excuse and lie in the book. She doesn't want to waste time with someone who has ulterior motives. That includes men looking for a โ€œsugar mamaโ€ โ€” unless thatโ€™s what you both want.

โ€œShe will be very cognizant of whether she's constantly whipping out her credit card as the relationship progresses,โ€ Mathews says.

What real cougars have to say:

โ€œI've said it before and I'll say it again. Show us who you are, not what is in your pants. Don't think that we are sex starved older women and will be receptive to anything and everything sexual when you message us. Remember we do look for attraction and personality like everyone else. And when I say attraction, it's not to your ding dong. It's to your personality and face. Be sincere and honest with what you are looking for.โ€

โ€œJust be yourself, honest and respectful. We are no different than girls your age. Just be upfront about your intentions โ€” really not very complicated at all.โ€

7. She probably doesnโ€™t like the term โ€œcougar.โ€

โ€œIt just kind of has this predatory tone to it,โ€ Mathews says.

If you want to date an older woman, remember that sheโ€™s a real person โ€” not a male fantasy or fetish. If thatโ€™s what youโ€™re looking for, youโ€™re better off trying to find an older woman who just wants something casual

โ€œI have grown weary of it. For me, men donโ€™t see me as a human but rather the label. So I'm not a fan of it.โ€

โ€œCall them what they are. First and foremost, they're women. As such, they do deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I've seen plenty of people put a label on someone and in turn didn't give them the respect they deserve as a person. Just a reaction to the title given to them.

โ€œItโ€™s sexist crap and implies the older woman-younger man relationship is predatory.โ€

8. Donโ€™t focus on her age.

Remember that every woman is different, regardless of her age and dating history. Focusing on your age difference can put strain on the relationship and make her more aware of your differences.

โ€œMost women I've ever met have a pretty fierce inner critic that communicates what we can and can't do, or should or shouldn't do, what's appropriate or inappropriate, what other people are thinking,โ€ Mathews says.

She recommends focusing on your compatibility. Ask yourself:

โ€œCan you play together? Can you have fun together? Can you have good conversations together?โ€

What real cougars have to say:

โ€œDon't fixate on or fetishize the age gap โ€” even if it's hot for you โ€” when getting to know us. Don't state the obvious: Yes, I'm older. Yes, you're younger. We know. Clearly, that's why we're here. What else ya got?โ€

โ€œWe are not a kink. Please donโ€™t ask for pictures of me over and over and over and over hoping that you will eventually get a nude. Ainโ€™t happening! The only one worthy of the nude is the Cub that is dating me. So donโ€™t ask. I donโ€™t give anything more than just from the shoulders on up. You might also have luck meeting cougars in person. Guyana Z., 62, from New York, met her first younger boyfriend on a Badfish Booze Cruise and her second boyfriend on an Impractical Jokers cruise.

You can try to meet older women at bars, coffee shops, or at work. That's where Leah K., 45, of Cranford, N.J., met her now-husband, who is 11 years younger than her.

“We worked at the same resort on Miami Beach,โ€ Leah says. โ€œI was teaching meditation and yoga. He was working in the fitness center.”

What is a cougar looking for?

โ€œCougars are looking for a genuine connection with someone who will allow them to have fun and live in the moment,โ€ Hill says.

In fact, a small Ipsos and Cougar Life poll surveyed over 1,000 adults on cougar and cub relationships. According to the poll, these were the main benefits women cited for dating younger:

  • 38% cited their partnerโ€™s open-mindness
  • 33% cited their partnerโ€™s physical attractiveness
  • 30% cited their partnerโ€™s free spirit

“We want to feel sexy, supported, comforted, and loved,” Maxine says. “That's the most important part of a relationship.”

How do you know if a cougar wants you?

Older women probably wonโ€™t play hard to get. It will be obvious that they want you because they will let you know, Guyana says.

Other times, older women show that they're interested by listening attentively and initiating flirty cues.

“I believe it's all in the eyes,” Maxine says. “When I make flirty eyes at a man, I'm interested and waiting to see if that interest is genuinely mutual.”

What do you call someone dating a cougar?

The term for someone dating a cougar, or older woman, is a cub.

Can a cougar relationship work?

โ€œAbsolutely,โ€ Hill says. โ€œ[Cougar relationships] are usually based on an organic connection and mutually beneficial.โ€

Maxine says that as long as there is chemistry and neither partner focuses too heavily on the age gap, you can have a successful relationship. She says her current boyfriend is her biggest supporter.

“I believe that different things work for different people, and this is what works for us,โ€ Maxine says.

If you are deciding between white gold and yellow gold โ€” perhaps for an engagement ring โ€” or you have white gold or yellow gold pieces to sell, youโ€™ve come to the right place.

White gold and yellow gold are both timeless and similarly priced, so which one you choose will largely depend on your style preferences. In this post, weโ€™ll give you all the info you need to select the right metal for you (or your partner):

What are the differences between white gold and yellow gold?

Pros and cons of yellow gold

Pros and cons of white gold

White vs yellow gold FAQs

Bottom line: Is white gold worth more than yellow gold? Which has the better resale value?

What is the difference between white gold and yellow gold?

Beyond their obvious color difference, white gold and yellow gold are alloys (a mixture of metals) composed of different types of metals. White gold is also typically plated with a layer of rhodium, which gives it its white appearance.

The amount of pure gold in both yellow gold and white gold is dependent upon its karat weight (which is typically stamped on jewelry):

  • 24k gold = 99.9% pure
  • 18k gold = 75% pure
  • 14k gold = 58.3% pure

According to the United States Geological Survey, white gold became popular in the 1920s as a less expensive alternative to platinum, which typically costs hundreds more in a ring setting.

Historically, both gold alloys have traded off popularity, with yellow gold currently making a comeback in engagement ring fashion (thanks in part to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle).

Whatโ€™s yellow gold made of?

Yellow gold is an alloy of pure gold and metals like copper and zinc.

Whatโ€™s white gold made of?

White gold is an alloy of pure gold and white metals like silver, nickel, palladium, or zinc, which give it an off-white, less yellow appearance. White gold is often plated in rhodium to achieve a whiter color and increase its durability and shine.

Is white gold real gold?

Yes! White gold is real gold alloyed with other metals like silver, nickel, or palladium.

Sterling silver vs. plated silver vs. white gold

Rhodium plating and white gold FAQs

Rhodium is a rare platinum group metal commonly used to plate white gold.

What is rhodium plating?

Rhodium plating is a thin layer of rhodium that coats other metals, typically white gold, to make it appear pure white and to make it more durable and reflective.

Rhodium is actually the most expensive metal in the world at nearly $10,000 per ounce as of January 2026 โ€” down from a high of $29,000 in 2021.

However, its hard and brittle nature โ€” as well as its exorbitant cost โ€” means it cannot be used in its pure form to make jewelry.

How long does rhodium last on white gold?

Rhodium plating fades over time to reveal the warmer white gold underneath, especially with frequent wear and exposure to chemicals like chlorine. According to New York City jeweler Frank Darling, youโ€™ll need to have it replated every six months to a year to maintain its white appearance.

Is rhodium plating white gold a good idea?

That depends on your personal preferences and whether you want to spend money to have your rhodium-plated jewelry replated every six months to a year. The cost of rhodium plating varies by jeweler and the thickness of the plating, though it typically costs less than $100 for an engagement ring.

Rhodium is also hypoallergenic, so if you have a nickel allergy but want a white gold piece, it can protect your skin.

On their own, most of todayโ€™s white gold mixtures do appear white, with a slightly warm hue. You may only notice a color difference if your white gold piece is placed next to a platinum or rhodium-plated piece. If you are happy with this warmer, off-white color, you do not need to have your white gold plated.

Yellow gold FAQs

Gold is a simple metal found on the Periodic Table of Elements โ€” yet it is deeply mysterious, primed for scams throughout history, and requires some basic education.

Here are some terms you may encounter:

What is gold vermeil?

Gold vermeil is sterling silver that has been gold-plated, typically with 22K to 24K gold. It is more common to find gold vermeil in 14K-18K.

What is โ€œgold plated?โ€

Gold plating involves affixing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal โ€” like copper or silver โ€” by a chemical or electrochemical plating process.

Gold-plated jewelry typically doesn't have resale value. Learn more about how to tell if gold is real.

What is โ€œgold filled?โ€

Gold-filled jewelry is constructed in two or three layers: The core metal is brass, and a gold alloy is then bonded to one or both surfaces of the brass core with heat and pressure. Gold-filled jewelry contains a much thicker layer of gold than plated or vermeil items and will hold up better with wear comparatively.

What's the difference between gold, gold filled, and gold plated?

Unlike plated (also referred to as โ€œelectroplatedโ€ or โ€œdippedโ€) gold, gold-filled items are legally required to contain 5% gold by weight. โ€œGoldโ€ items are the same gold alloy all the way through.

Pros and cons of yellow gold

If youโ€™re shopping for a yellow gold piece of jewelry, you should keep these things in mind:

Pros

  • Will not need to be replated
  • If your diamond is slightly yellow, yellow gold will do a better job of hiding its yellow color
  • Provides a beautiful contrast to most colorless and colored gemstones

Cons

  • More prone to scratching than white gold

Pros and cons of white gold

These are some pros and cons of choosing a white gold piece:

Pros

  • Alloyed with stronger metals than yellow gold, making it more resistant to scratching and regular wear
  • Rhodium plating provides an extra layer of protection and shine

Cons

  • Needs to be replated every six months to a year to maintain its pure white color, which can cost $50-100 each time (depending on the jeweler and size of your jewelry)
  • Decreased in popularity in recent years, though trends are always changing
  • All about selling gold by searching “sell gold near me”

White vs yellow gold FAQs

Common questions about the qualities of the different gold colors:

White gold vs yellow gold price

White gold and yellow gold of the same karat weight contain the same amount of pure gold, so most white gold and yellow gold pieces have relatively similar (or the same) prices. Any price differences will be a reflection of current trends/demand of either gold type.

For example, this Blue Nile engagement ring setting is the same price in both 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold:

White gold vs. yellow gold ring on Blue Nile.
Yellow gold vs. white gold ring on Blue Nile.

The Knot 2021 Jewelry & Engagement Study surveyed more than 5,000 recently engaged couples and found that yellow gold ring settings have increased in popularity by 11% since 2017, though white gold settings remain the most popular choice at 45% of all engagement ring settings (down from 61% in 2017).

Vox Media credits Meghan Markleโ€™s yellow gold engagement ring (with side stones from his mother Princess Dianaโ€™s jewelry collection) for the recent resurgence of yellow gold, though yellow gold overall has regained popularity in recent years.

Do diamonds look better in white or yellow gold?

According to the International Gem Society, a yellow gold setting is more forgiving for diamonds that have a nearly colorless or faint color, making them appear whiter in contrast.

If you have a colorless diamond, white gold can enhance its white color, while yellow gold will show through your diamond to give it a slightly yellow hue.

However, whether you choose white or yellow gold is primarily a personal preference.

White gold vs yellow gold engagement ring?

Whether you choose a white gold vs. yellow gold engagement ring depends on your personal style preferences and the color of the gemstone you choose.

If you want a contrasting look or you have a diamond with a slightly yellow color, a yellow gold setting might be best. You can also buy a two-tone engagement ring, where the band is yellow gold and the ring prongs are white gold or platinum to reduce the amount of yellow that shows through your diamond.

White gold engagement ring settings continue to be the most popular among engaged couples, according to a 2025 survey by The Knot, though yellow gold has increased in popularity in recent years.

Which is more durable?

Because the metals it's alloyed with are more durable and because itโ€™s typically plated in rhodium, white gold is more durable and resistant to scratching than yellow gold.

Bottom line: Is white gold worth more than yellow gold? Which has the better resale value?

White gold and yellow gold of the same karat weight have about the same value. If you were to sell either for scrap, you would get about the same value from a gold buyer. Now is a great time to sell as gold is at record highs.

Platinum and white gold may look nearly identical, but they are actually quite different โ€” in makeup, durability, and price.

Whether youโ€™re choosing between a platinum or white gold engagement ring or you have platinum or white gold jewelry to sell, keep reading to learn everything you need to know about these two popular metals:

Is platinum worth more than gold, or is gold worth more than platinum?

Generally speaking, platinum is more valuable than white gold, though its resale value is less stable, and fewer shops are willing to buy it back.

Platinum spot price was per ounce as of .

While the price of platinum is currently lower than the price of gold, platinum jewelry contains a greater percentage of pure platinum (typically 95% or more) than white gold contains in pure gold:

  • 24k gold = 99.9% pure (not suitable for jewelry)
  • 18k gold = 75% pure
  • 14k gold = 58.3% pure

The amount of pure metal is often stamped on jewelry.

What are the differences between white gold and platinum?

To start, platinum is itself a precious metal, while white gold is an alloy of pure gold and other metals. These are some other differences between platinum and white gold:

What is platinum?

Platinum is a dense and malleable precious metal with a silvery-white appearance.

What is white gold?

White gold is an alloy of pure gold combined with other metals like silver, nickel, palladium, or zinc to dull its yellow color. White gold is often plated in rhodium to make it appear pure white.

White gold was originally developed to imitate platinum, according to the United States Geological Survey.

White gold vs yellow gold: Whatโ€™s the difference, which is worth more?

Platinum vs white gold durability

Platinum is denser than gold, which means it's less likely to break and does a better job of keeping gemstones in place.

However, rhodium-plated white gold is harder to scratch than platinum. Note that white gold needs to be replated every six months to a year, which can cost $50-$120 each time, depending on the jeweler and the size of the item youโ€™re plating.

Platinum vs white gold color

When itโ€™s plated in rhodium, white gold and platinum have the same silver-white color (though white gold may be slightly lighter in appearance). Without rhodium plating, white gold is slightly more yellow in color than platinum.

Because rhodium plating fades with time and wear, white gold should be replated every six months to a year to maintain its pure white appearance.

Platinum vs white gold price

Platinum is typically more expensive than white gold.

When it comes to engagement rings, New York City jeweler Frank Darling reports a platinum engagement ring costs about $300 more on average than a white gold engagement ring of similar style.

This video may help you choose between white gold and platinum:

Sterling silver vs. plated silver vs. white gold

What are the benefits of white gold vs platinum?

If youโ€™re shopping for a white gold vs. platinum piece, here are some things to keep in mind:

Platinum vs white gold engagement ring: Why use platinum instead of white gold?

While a platinum engagement ring will likely cost a few hundred dollars more upfront, a white gold engagement ring may cost more in the long run when you consider the cost of regularly replating its surface.

Is it worth buying a platinum ring?

Because it requires less maintenance than white gold, buying a platinum ring might be worth it if you can afford the higher upfront cost.

Is platinum better than white gold?

Neither platinum nor white gold is โ€œbetterโ€ than the other. Platinum is less prone to breakage, while white gold plated in rhodium is more scratch resistant than platinum.

Which one you choose largely depends on your budget, since platinum generally costs more than white gold โ€” though it has a less stable resale value.

18k white gold vs platinum

18k white gold is made of 75% pure gold and is closer in price to platinum than 14k white gold. These two identical engagement ring settings from Blue Nile โ€” one in 18k white gold and the other in platinum โ€” have an original price difference of $150.

Platinum vs. white gold engagement ring from Blue Nile.
18K white gold vs. platinum engagement ring from Blue Nile.

14k white gold vs platinum

14k white gold is made of 58.3% pure gold, which makes it less expensive than 18k gold โ€” though itโ€™s also more resistant to scratching and bending because of its higher concentration of other metals. This 14k white gold setting from Blue Nile is about $250 less than its identical platinum setting above:

Bottom line: Know the differences between platinum and white gold before you buy or sell jewelry

When youโ€™re comparison shopping platinum and white gold jewelry, itโ€™s important to understand their differences before you buy.

Platinum generally costs more upfront but may be less expensive in the long run, while white gold is more resistant to scratching but not as strong as platinum. Gold is also typically a better investment because of its stable resale value.

When youโ€™re selling white gold or platinum pieces, you should always sell to a reputable precious metals buyer.

If you have old or antique silver flatware that you no longer use or want, you can either sell it online or to a local buyer.

Sterling silverware is surprisingly expensive, and this is ever more so as silver prices keep climbing, closing at $78 at the end of January โ€”ย even after a Jan. 31 drop, with expert projecting that rates will climb.

We weigh the pros and cons of both options and give our recommendation for the best place to sell silver flatware:

Where to sell silver flatware online

Where to sell silverware locally

If you have questions about valuing silver flatware or serving pieces, head to our guide.

Where to sell silver flatware online

There are several ways you can sell silver flatware online, from online silver buyers to online auction sites:

Pros of selling your silverware online

  • Online options may offer the highest prices
  • Not constrained to local options near you
  • Privacy of online transactions
  • Sell without leaving your house

Cons of selling your flatware online

  • Cash payout not as quick as local buyers
  • Dealing with shipping (our recommended online buyer covers the cost of shipping)
  • Not supporting local businesses

With all that said, these are the places we evaluated for cashing in your silver, including two name-brand sites (CashforSilverUSA and Replacements), as well as three types of marketplaces (consignments, auctions and marketplaces).

1. CashforSilverUSA

Based on our own extensive research and experiences selling silver and gold โ€” including comparing top online buyers and local options โ€” CashforSilverUSA is our recommendation for most silver flatware sales.

CashforSilver has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and offers a 10% bonus if you ship within 7 days.

Learn more about CashforSilverUSA's sister site in this CashforGoldUSA review.

CashforSilverUSA paid $710 for this sterling flatware set:

A CashforSilverUSA customer got $300 for this set of silver coins:

And look at this collection of Kennedy half dollars CashforSilverUSA paid $1,956 for:

CashforSilverUSA paid for a collection of Kennedy half dollars.

FYI: CashforSilverUSA does not buy silver-plated items, so if your flatware is not marked with a sterling silver mark, it's probably plated.

2. Replacements.com (online buyer of complete collections)

If you have a highly collectible brand of flatware or a uniquely complete set in pristine condition, it might make sense to send it in to Replacements.com, a reputable online buyer of used, vintage silverware and antique tableware items, including:

  • China / dinnerware
  • Crystal / glassware
  • Holiday ornaments and other collectibles
  • Silverware / flatware

This is a list of some of the most desirable silverware brands in resale.

Selling on Replacements.com makes sense mostly for dealers who work with large quantities of silver and china, understand the value of what they have and deal in items that are best sold piecemeal, or that are a special, large collection, vs flatware best sold in bulk for melt value.

For example, this 40-piece sterling silver Belle Meade silverware set is listed at $5,799 on Replacements.com. Based on the average weight of a 5-piece place setting of 11.5 ounces, this 40-piece set would would be worth about $6,438 as of Dec. 26, 2025 if sold strictly for its silver content.

tiffany flatware for sale on replacements.com

This sterling silver Gorham serving spoon is listed for $349 on Replacements.com. Based on the spot value of its silver alone, it would be worth about $350 (with an estimated weight of 5 ounces based on similar pieces).

As its name suggests, Replacements.com is popular with buyers who are interested in replacing a missing fork from their silverware set, or a broken soup bowl from their family china. Today, the site sells a wide variety of individual pieces, full sets, and all things in between. Most items for sale are brand names.

Replacements.com is a legit business:

  • Founded in 1981, it is one of the oldest online buyers of tableware
  • Better Business Bureau rating of A+
  • Many positive online reviews (and many negative ones, too)
  • Useful pattern identification tool if you don't know the brand or pattern of your item

Cons of Replacements Ltd.:

  • You pay for all shipping and insurance โ€” including returns
  • Replacements Ltd. reports to only work with about 500 regular sellers, so the chances of them accepting your item is small
  • Since they are in the resell business โ€” not smelting / scrap โ€” Replacements.com only wants premium items that are not damaged or low-quality
  • Final offers take 14 days or more after the item is received by Replacements Ltd.

3. Selling silverware through online consignment

You may consider selling your flatware through an online consignment shop like Mercari, in which the retailer sells your silverware and shares the proceeds with you.

This process can be a lot of work for little money, and no guarantees. Each online consigner takes a certain percentage of the proceeds from your sale.

4. Online auction

Online auction sites, including ebay, can be a solid place to sell your silverware.

These are some silverware and silver plated flatware sets listed for sale on ebay as of February, 2026:

sterling silver fork listed on ebay

5. Online marketplaces for selling silver and family valuables

A marketplace like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or other listings can attract buyers locally and nationally. It takes some work to photograph, post and then vet responses, but it gives you the control to set your price and deal face-to-face with the buyers.

However, there is always risk involved in selling on these sites. Choose a safe public place to meet up and never give out your address or other personal information. Be wary of common scams like buyers sending fake payment confirmations or overpaying for items and asking for a refund.

Where to sell silverware locally

If you are leaning toward an in-person sale, these are some pros and cons and places to go:

Pros of selling your silverware locally

  • Quick cash
  • Deal with a local business you may know and trust
  • Feel good about supporting a local company
  • If you choose a pawn loan, you can get your flatware back

Cons of selling your flatware locally

  • Local options may not offer you the highest price
  • Youโ€™re constrained to options near you. By comparison, online silver and gold buyers serve a national market, and compete against other national buyers. This puts pressure on them to pay you top dollar for your silver โ€” pressure that local buyers just donโ€™t have.
  • It can be embarrassing to walk into a local silver buyer or pawn broker, which can feel like announcing you're broke
  • Since you should always negotiate, it can feel more intimidating to bargain face-to-face than over email or the phone with an online silver buyer.

6. How estate auctions handle silverware

Auctions can be a good choice if you believe that your flatware has value outside of the value held within the metal โ€” for example, if it is an antique or a noted brand.

Itโ€™s important to note that the auction house will take a cut of the final sale price if your item sells, and as with tag sales, thereโ€™s no guarantee that youโ€™ll actually find a buyer.

7. Local silver buyers and pawn shops

Most pawn shops only pay about half the resale value of whatever it is theyโ€™re buying. Even if you find a local silver exchange where you can sell your silverware, many of those shops arenโ€™t much better in terms of how much they pay.

However, pawn shops can be a good option if you just need money and don't want to sell your flatware. Pawn loans allow you to take out a loan using your item as collateral. You must repay the value of the loan, plus interest, to get it back.

8. Tag sale, garage sale

You can have a tag sale or garage sale, but thereโ€™s no guarantee youโ€™ll find a buyer. Sterling silver is best sold for scrap โ€” very few people want to buy or own silver flatware anymore, and selling it directly through a tag sale is a lot of work that will not net the most money.

If your item is silver plated, however, it may be interesting to someone for a very low price, but again โ€” there is very little money in this and donating to a charity thrift store may be the easiest option.

9. Antique dealers and estate sales

Antique stores and estate sale companies can help you sell, or buy outright, your silver flatware. Especially if you have a full set, or the desired brand or unusual silverware set, a good antique dealer can help you understand and fetch the best price for your silverware.

10. Thrift shops

Silver plated flatware and other lower-end silver items may find a home through a thrift store since they do not have much resale value, but may be interesting or beautiful to someone. Don't expect the store to give you anything other than a tax-deduction charity form.
