Match.com is synonymous with dating websites as Kleenex is to tissues. It launched back in 1995, making it one of the first modern dating websites in its time. But since it came on the scene, so many dating websites and apps have cropped up making us wonder if Match.com still holds up.

Bianca's take: Is Match worth paying for?

Match makes it hard for anyone with a free subscription to interact with others on the app. To make your time worthwhile, you need to buy a plan. However, many Match.com reviews suggest that the website isnโ€™t worth the money, stating that they werenโ€™t meeting quality people and that they had trouble canceling their subscription plans. Of course, every userโ€™s experience is different, and factors like location, age, and gender may affect it.

Despite their best efforts, Match.com's UX and brand is dated. I strongly feel like the dating app and site could use a brand refresh to appeal to younger users. I donโ€™t like the idea of paying for a dating app when other great apps allow you to meet singles for free.

However, because of the sheer number of people on the site thanks to the fact that it has a lot of brand recognition, and depending on where you live, it may be worth giving Match.com a chance.

How Match.com works

Users create a profile on Match.com and then set their dating preferences, including gender and age range. You also have to answer a five-minute questionnaire about yourself that touches upon interests, hobbies, and what youโ€™re looking for in a partner. When it comes to your dating preferences and interests, you can also rate how important they are to you.

Once your profile is complete, itโ€™s time to get matching! Users can find matches by swiping or looking through their interest pages. When swiping, youโ€™re only shown one profile at a time, allowing you to really focus on that individual user. When you skip a profile, Match takes that into account and ensures that every profile that comes your way is compatible with your interests.

When clicking the โ€œinterestsโ€ page, youโ€™ll find lots of interaction between other Match.com users; you can like or give someone a โ€œwinkโ€ (a more flirtatious like) by having them swipe on your profile first. With Match, you can also send direct messages to other users without having to swipe at them.

Is Match.com a safe dating site?

Match.com is as safe as any other dating app. Like with most dating apps, you have the option to verify your Match profile by connecting it to your social media.

Other dating apps under Match Group Inc. (like Tinder and Hinge) are taking extra steps with safety. Match Group Inc. announced a partnership with Garbo (a female non-for-profit background checking platform) to run low-cost and fair background checks for users who sign up. In addition, Match Group Inc. is also working with the safety company Noonlight to create new features to alert emergencies among users. Right now these features will only be available for Tinder, but if successful other dating websites and apps under the Match Group Inc. might follow suit.

Match prohibits anyone whoโ€™s been labeled a registered sex offender, or who has been convicted or pleaded no contest to a felony, violent, or sexual crime.

Like with other dating apps, itโ€™s important to be cautious about who youโ€™re meeting. If you ever see anything inappropriate or suspicious on Match, report it.

Before you meet up in person, you may want to do a background check. You can run your date's name through a site like TruthFinder, which will pull all online public records on the person and compile them into an easy-to-read report.

And while you're at it, learn more about dating red flags in general.

Does Match have fake profiles?

Unfortunately, a common complaint among Match.com reviews is the number of fake profiles on the site. In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), sued Match Group Inc. for using fake profiles to trick users into buying paid subscriptions. Since news broke, Match Group Inc. has been making efforts to regain usersโ€™ trust, including launching an advertising campaign that takes a stand against fake accounts. According to Match Group Inc.โ€™s website, thereโ€™s a dedicated team that helps detect and prevent scams from happening.

While Match.com is making efforts to stop fake profiles from appearing on their site, itโ€™s important as a user to be aware and cautious while youโ€™re making connections. Always report any profile that looks suspicious.

What are the pros of using Match.com?

There are over 8 million matches worldwide

Match.com reports to have the largest database of single users. Because itโ€™s been around for so long, youโ€™ll find a broad range of users from different generations finding love. You can even use your profile on their sister sites to find even more matches.

The majority of people on here are looking for serious relationships

Because you have to pay for a subscription plan to use the app to the fullest, people have this idea that the users on Match.com are serious about finding relationships (However, anyone can sign up regardless of what youโ€™re looking for.)

It also might skew older (which makes sense, since there are a lot of newer, modern dating apps on the market). I had two friends who signed up years ago and said it was hard to find anyone around their age (they were 23 years old, so that was probably why). One Match.com review on Reddit says they found more quality matches on site.

If you're over 40, you may also have more luck meeting people in person.

Into older men? Doโ€™s and donโ€™ts for dating an older man

Match.com can offer a personalized dating experience

Unlike other dating apps, you set up multiple custom searches on Match to find your well…match! Taking advantage of this helps weed out any people who may not be a good fit romantically.

They have their Match Guarantee

New users get to participate in the โ€œMatch Dating Guaranteeโ€ program: youโ€™ll get a six-month free membership, and if you donโ€™t meet anyone during that window, Match.com will refund you. If they donโ€™t meet anyone, Match.com will refund your first six months.

Match Events

Something unique to Match.com is their โ€œMatch Eventsโ€ which allows users to meet and connect IRL. The way a Match Event works is that registered users can propose a group activity to Match.com and share it with other members in your area.

Their emphasis on compatibility

You know how when you compare dating apps with friends, it always feels like youโ€™re getting served the same people? Match.com offers a more personalized approach: It takes your preferences and assigns a percentage when you match with other users. They also offer โ€œreverse matchingโ€ where you can match with people who are also looking for your specific interests.

What are the cons of using Match.com?

No dating app is without its issues. Below are the biggest cons of Match.com:

You need to buy a subscription in order to fully use it

With some dating apps, you can have a pleasant experience using the free version. With Match.com you barely have an experience. Buying a subscription is the only way to get access to all of Match.comโ€™s features. This can be costly for people who donโ€™t have the budget to pay for a dating website. When I spoke with friends on their thoughts on Match.com, they said having to pay was the reason they never tried it.

Canceling your membership might be difficult

A lot of Match reviewers complain about how theyโ€™re still getting charged by Match months after canceling their membership. And while theyโ€™ve been contacting Match.comโ€™s support team, their customer service seems to be non-existent.

User experience is unclear

In a Reddit/datingoverthirty subthread, one user goes into detail about his experience, stating that user experience at Match was confusing; (some user elements (like the heart button) would randomly disappear. He also pointed out that you canโ€™t read messages until you buy a subscription and once it expires, all your matches disappear. I'm currently trying to reactivate my account and despite resetting my password (as they asked me to), I still can't get in.

Might not be suitable for hookups

While Match.com is open to everyone who wants to just make a connection with others, most people are on it to find love. However, some angry customers say the dating pool isnโ€™t any different from what you might find on other dating apps (despite having to pay). However, be mindful that everyoneโ€™s experiences on dating sites are different, and it can depend based on where you live, your age, and what youโ€™re looking for.

Match.com reviews

Match.com reviews on the Better Business Bureau

Match.com is not accredited or rated by the BBB. Customer reviewers gave it 1.08 out of five stars. The majority of reviews complain about the auto-renewal and their difficulty canceling their membership.

Match.com reviews on Trustpilot

Match.comโ€™s U.S. site has a poor rating on Trustpilot with just 1.3 out of 5 stars. Most reviews complain about the number of fake profiles, lack of customer service, and how Match continued to charge them months after canceling.

However, one Trustpilot reviewer gave the dating site five stars because he met his partner, proving that Match.com does indeed work. (It also shows how people who havenโ€™t had luck on this app are quick to write a negative review.)

Match.com reviews on Reddit

There are also numerous threads on Reddit discussing Match.com. What most users say is that the cost of Match.com isnโ€™t worth the experience. A common thing thatโ€™s been said is that users find from other peopleโ€™s experiences that either they find a match in one week or theyโ€™re months on the site and arenโ€™t able to find anyone.

All these reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, considering that most people write reviews based on negative experiences.

Match vs. eharmony:

eharmony has always been compared to Match. In fact, both sites are known as the OG dating sites. eharmony differs from Match.com primarily because of its history of focusing on serious relationships. Their compatibility quiz stands out from the other dating sites, plus they have a strict verification process to ensure a safe dating experience.

Match is a broad dating platform, serving all kinds of daters, from those seeking something casual to serious ones. One of the biggest challenges facing online daters is knowing whether or not the profiles they interact with are real. In 2019, the FTC sued the owners of Match Group, Inc. owners of Match.com, Tinder, OKCupid, and PlentyOfFish, for using fake profiles to lure new customers into upgrading their free memberships to paid subscriptions.

In contrast, eharmony vets their members with ID verification tools to prove they are who they say, beginning with not being married, and routinely closes suspicious accounts. After providing peace of mind, eharmony then curates potential matches for their members using a detailed compatibility quiz, saving time from having to scroll through endless, unviable options.

On Match, you choose your dating preferences (including gender and age range), build your profile, and choose your subscription plan. The dating profile for Match is very comprehensive. A user can find matches either by swiping or through the โ€œDiscoverโ€ page, which helps users create customized searches and explore new profiles.

Match.com has a new Premium Match Plan with access to a yearly review of your profiles from Match staff experts, a monthly โ€œboostโ€ to increase the number of people who see your profile, and email read notifications.

Dollar for dollar, Match costs less than eharmony. That said, you get what you pay for: the major difference between the two sites is that Match is a general dating platform intended for all kinds of dating and eharmony focuses on serious, long-term dating, increasing your chances of finding your ideal match.

Do you want your dating site to check for marital status and cheaters? eharmony provides that service, Match does not. eharmony has an A BBB rating; Match is not registered. To that end, eharmony offers features such as its compatibility quiz to curate matches. For the prospective user who is actively seeking a serious, long-term relationship, eharmony is worth the extra money.

When your relationship or marriage ends, itโ€™s natural to crave the companionship (and sex) you recently lost and to want to fill that void. Sometimes a fun affair, friend with benefits, or hookup is just what the heart needs.

However, when youโ€™re simultaneously healing from a broken relationship, your judgment may not be 100% sound. You might be more likely to quickly develop feelings for someone before you really get to know them, just because it feels good to be with someone new.

This is called a rebound relationship.

Rebound relationships often get a bad rap, but they donโ€™t have to be a bad thing, as long as you recognize them for what they are (or can be) โ€” a way to get back in the dating game and shake off some of the lingering feelings of your past relationship.

Here's what you should know about rebound relationships:

What is a rebound relationship?

Is the first relationship after divorce always a rebound?

What are the stages of a rebound relationship?

  1. Elation and infatuation.
  2. Constant comparison to your ex and your previous relationship โ€” good and bad both.
  3. Devastating heartbreak that feels like it will never fucking end.
  4. Eventually, you get over the heartbreak and move on. It might seem impossible now, but you will feel better.

What are the characteristics of rebound relationships?

How long do rebound relationships last?

What is a rebound relationship?

A rebound relationship is one where people start dating quickly after the end of a previous relationship. Typically, it is understood that a rebound relationship is not built for the long-term.

Kevin Coleman, a marriage and family therapist and owner of Connected Therapy in Columbia, S.C., says people usually jump into a rebound relationship without taking time to discern whether they're ready for another relationship.

โ€œUsually, they are still in the middle of processing and grieving their previous relationship, but they turn to their rebound relationship to distract themselves from their last relationship,โ€ Coleman says.

Is the first relationship after divorce always a rebound?

Rebound relationships are a real, and necessary thing. There has to be a first for everything โ€” including a post-divorce relationship!

I think what you're asking is: Is the first relationship after a divorce doomed to end? Can the first relationship after divorce work? Will my new relationship after my divorce last forever and ever?

Technically, the first relationship after your divorce is, in fact, a rebound relationship. Some rebound relationships end in flames, while others last for eternity.

How do I know if itโ€™s a rebound relationship?

If you were in a relationship that ended relatively recently, or the person has not dated since the divorce or breakup, it is likely a rebound relationship. If the connection is white-hot and insane, it is definitely a rebound relationship.

Lots of stories about rebound relationships after divorce in movies and TV shows.

What are the stages of a rebound relationship?

Generally, there are two main phases of a rebound relationship:

1. Elation and infatuation.

In this first phase of rebound relationships, you likely feel so damned happy to feel a connection, be touched, have sex and be cared for. You had felt like you would never feel that spark, or that anyone would be attracted to you โ€” and now both are actually happening! It is amazing! You were wrong about all the bad things and this gives you hope for everything you could ever imagine!

The glee can be so intense you feel like it is love. It could turn into love eventually โ€” but it absolutely is not love right now. Trust me on this. You are not in love.

2. Constant comparison to your ex and your previous relationship โ€” good and bad both.

Imagine that you ate rice and beans every single day for your whole life. The only food memory you have is of rice and beans, and because everyone you ever knew only ate R&B, and the only food available in your universe was rice and beans, to you, food was rice and beans. Maybe you loved rice and beans and were cool with this, but maybe you hated rice and beans and craved something else.

And then one day you eat a cantaloupe. All you would do was drool in wonder over this cantaloupe. Compare cantaloupe to rice and beans. Your mind is fucking blown. Cantaloupe, cantaloupe, cantaloupe. Sweet, juicy, pretty color, creamy texture.

But youโ€™d also start to wonder if you were going to die because cantaloupe doesnโ€™t have protein and you sorta missed rice and beans. Itโ€™s complicated. Theyโ€™re both good. You like both (though cantaloupe is better) bit you get confused sometimes. Sometimes you are sure that your life is 1,000X better now that you have cantaloupe. But sometimes a bowl of R&B would be good โ€” for old times. Rice and beans wasnโ€™t so bad, right? Then you remember that one time with rice and beans and youโ€™re not really sure.

3. Devastating heartbreak that feels like it will never fucking end.

Or, you stay together more or less happily with your new dude โ€” though relationships are usually complicated, especially at this late stage now that everyone is so wounded.

4. Eventually, you get over the heartbreak and move on. It might seem impossible now, but you will feel better.

What are the characteristics of rebound relationships?

Dragomir says rebound relationships often have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Start quickly after the end of a previous relationship
  • Involve two people who may not be emotionally ready to be in a relationship
  • Often based on physical attraction and infatuation, rather than true love or trust
  • Often involve intense emotions and can be turbulent and short-lived
  • Can be painful when they end abruptly

These are some things you should know about rebound relationships:

Being the new girlfriend after divorce

If you are the first person your man dated after (or during!) his divorce, here are some unique challenges you may face:

  • Jealousy from his crazy-ass ex-wife
  • Jealousy from his understandably hurt ex-wife
  • Adjustments from his kids
  • Adjustments from his friends and extended family
  • Managing his own grief and baggage
  • Your own understandable insecurity โ€” Is he on the rebound? Are you being used? Does he still love his wife? Will the kids hate you โ€” and result in you being dumped?

Being the new boyfriend after divorce

If you are dating a woman who has recently divorced, these are some things you may experience:

  • Emotional fallout and baggage from the divorce
  • Jealousy from her ex spouse
  • Struggles of single motherhood (according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 5 of 6 single moms have primary custody of their children), including co-parenting drama
  • Her intense feelings early on

Why do rebound relationships feel like love?

When you are in a breakup, you feel an intense romantic connection to your ex โ€” but the energy is negative. You hate your ex.

When you find a rebound relationship, you also feel an intense romantic connection to your new lover โ€” and the energy is so positive! In our culture, we describe an intense, positive romantic energy as love.

That is a fallacy.

Are rebound relationships good or bad?

Rebound relationships are necessary โ€” someone has to be your first relationship and sex after a breakup or divorce, right?

Just donโ€™t fuck up your life for this person, at least not for a good 3 years. Practice:

  • Birth control
  • Separate residences
  • No marriages or commingling finances
  • STD checks

Do rebound relationships actually work?

100% absolutely people fall in real love, marry or otherwise spend many happy decades together with a rebound relationship โ€” or even an affair partner. But there is no reason to jump there. This may be a friend with benefits, short-term lover, hook-up or boyfriend for a few years.

No need to rush.

Can you fall in love after a divorce?

When you are in a breakup, you feel an intense romantic connection to your ex โ€” but the energy is negative. You hate your ex.

When you find a rebound relationship, you also feel an intense romantic connection to your new lover โ€” and the energy is so positive! In our culture, we describe an intense, positive romantic energy as love.

That is a fallacy.

It can be confusing to determine the difference between love and lust after divorce.

Many marriages that end in divorce were sexless and without emotional bond for years โ€” so a newfound connection and hot sex can muddy the emotional waters in an especially profound way after divorce.

Why rebound relationships fail

Rebound relationships fail because one of you is a hot mess from the previous relationship, not healed, but hungry for emotional connection and likely sex. The new boyfriend or girlfriend got wrapped up by proxy in the intensity of that breakup, confusing it for a future, when instead it was just that: An intense romance.

How long do rebound relationships last after divorce? What the statistics show

A research study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships followed people who recently broke up with a partner. Those that started a new relationship during the study were together for an average of 2 months.

Signs a rebound relationship is ending

First sign: Did you find this article by Googling, โ€œWarning signs it is a rebound relationship?โ€

Other red flags in relationships:

  • Your new partner just broke up from a long-term or intense relationship
  • The newly broken up partner stalks his or her ex on social media
  • Lots of mentions of the previous relationship
  • No real physical intimacy like holding hands, cuddling and connection during sex
  • Conversation is light and fun, but not about personal stories, or big goals or efforts to share or understand each otherโ€™s worldview
  • Bananas-crazy chemistry despite having little in common
  • You worry this is a rebound

If you are the person โ€œreboundingโ€ from a relationship, Coleman says these are some signs to look for within yourself:

  • You start noticing the red flags you used to ignore in the new relationship
  • You catch yourself thinking about your ex more often than you did at the beginning of the relationship
  • You arenโ€™t excited when you picture your relationship in the long term (or you canโ€™t picture it at all)

โ€œThe realization phase is when the rebounder can no longer deny that they aren't actually a good fit with their new partner, and they know that they don't want to be with their new partner,โ€ Coleman says.

Emmaโ€™s personal experience โ€” how I understood my rebound relationship and got over it

Divorcing people are forced to face the loss of dreams of family life, and what the rest of their life will be like. And there is a ton of fear about all of it.

All this upheaval and stress can leave little room to deal with simple loss of love. When you are contending with a 360-degree life barf, there is scant space to sit quietly and feel the weighty grief of no longer spending nights with a person who you at least once โ€” likely still โ€” loved very much. Not just the absence of somebody. The absence of him.

Which is where the rebound breakup and all its gory hurt come in. If youโ€™re like me, that relationship was just that. Someone who I cared very much about, knew my kids, but was a lover โ€” no more. He was not my partner. We were emotionally, intellectually, sexually intertwined. But our lives were completely separate. We owned nothing together (though Iโ€™m still kind of annoyed with myself for never retrieving that La Perla nighty from his apartment, but Iโ€™ll live), and did not even share friends. When we broke up, there was nothing to contend with but grief.

Which is another reason why we do not mourn the love for our husbands immediately after divorce. Divorce often comes after months and years of a really unhappy relationship. By the time the four-way lawyers meetings start, youโ€™ve forgotten about the emotional, intellectual and sexual connection you once shared with that man. It was likely missing for a very long time โ€” which is exactly why it is so intoxicating when we find that connection again in a rebound. And, if youโ€™re like me, you consciously appreciate those mutual feelings so very much more โ€” which only adds to the scythe bludgeoning once it falls.

So I called my best friend. Iโ€™ve known Kirsten for 20 years, and even though she lives on the other side of the country, we remain very close and she knows all my shit. Kirsten did what a good friend does: she listened. As I talked and sobbed and blubbered and talked some more, it all came out.

Besides the end of my relationship, my mom has been unwell. My mom, who adores my kids second only to their parents. As my children and their needs as people grow, it seems that our circle of people shrinks โ€” and the pressures of being a single mother mount. I am just one person responsible for two human beings. It feels like too much.

โ€œWeโ€™ve all watched you over the past few years be so strong and amazing,โ€ Kirsten said. โ€œBut I said to myself, โ€˜I hope this girl can find time to process it all. Because sooner or later, it will catch up with her.โ€™โ€

It has caught up with me. When my marriage ended years ago, I slipped into survival mode: I jutted my jaw, made sure the kids and my business and the money and the divorce and the house were all in order. Trust me, there were plenty of late night crying fits and trips to therapists and a wonderful support group for loved ones of brain injury victims. But Iโ€™m not sure I fully felt the gravity of my loss โ€“ our loss. The loss my whole family suffered.

Finally, I recognized that three yearsโ€™ worth of grief had come knocking. For months after that conversation, I gave myself permission to mourn. Those sad Sundays were committed to indulging the emotion and grief and healing that had eluded me.

Funny thing, how empathy blooms. At bedtime after coming home from her dadโ€™s on Sunday, I laid next to my then-4-year-old daughter in her twin bed. She was riled up after the transition, which is not unusual, but it spiraled into something else. โ€œWhy canโ€™t our family be like other families?โ€ she cried.

I worry I dismiss the grief my kids might feel over the divorce. After all, Lucas wasnโ€™t even born when we separated โ€“ Helena not yet 2. โ€œItโ€™s always Helena, Lucas, Daddy โ€” and Mommy separate. Or Helena, Lucas, Mommy โ€” Daddy separate. I want us to be like Eleanorโ€™s family.โ€

I wasnโ€™t sure what to say. So I held her head in the crook of my neck and listened and let her cry and cry. โ€œThank you for telling me how you feel,โ€ I said. โ€œItโ€™s important to get it out. Because sooner or later it will catch up with you.โ€

Need quick cash? You just might want to seek out pawn shops nearby.

TV shows like Hardcore Pawn and Pawn Stars have changed what many think about pawn shops โ€” that they're not necessarily the seedy places some people imagine them to be.

But if you want to maximize the value of the items you have, especially jewelry, check out the sister sites DiamondsUSA and CashforGoldUSA, which have a best offer guarantee.

What is a pawn shop?

Pawn shops are places where you can sell for cash or get a loan on jewelry, electronics, firearms, and more for cash.

Pawn shops typically help out people who do not have other access to credit due to poor credit and/or low income. As such, pawnbrokers can get away with high interest rates and fees.

A pawn shop, or pawnbroker (same thing), are one of the oldest financial institutions, and also one of the financial institutions with one of the worst reputations โ€” which is not always warranted.

The pawn business is a basic financial transaction, with roots dating to ancient China, the Roman Empire and ancient Greece, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

A famous pawndeal was in 1388 when Englandโ€™s King Edward III pawned his jewels to the Lombards to finance war against France, and Queen Isabella of Spain used her jewelry as collateral to fund Christopher Columbusโ€™ expeditions to the New World.

If youโ€™re thinking about visiting your local pawnbroker for the first time, here's what you need to know:

Where to find reputable pawn shops

  1. See if a local pawnshop is a member of the National Pawnbrokers Association.
  2. See if your local pawnshop is registered with the BBB.
  3. Make sure their policies are clearly stated
  4. Check Yelp reviews for your local pawnshop.
  5. See if your local pawnshop is part of a national chain.
  6. Consider all options you have for selling your items for cash before going to a pawnshop.

Pawnfinders.com, run by the National Pawnbrokers Association, is a searchable list of members who must meet certain guidelines for ethical business practices to join.

2. See if your local pawnshop is registered with the BBB.

The Better Business Bureau accredits and rates businesses large and small based on yearsโ€™ in business, legitimacy, customer reviews and customer service. You can read customer reviews and see if the pawnbroker was responsive and thorough in addressing their concerns โ€” or totally apathetic.

All about selling gold by searching “sell gold near me”

3. Make sure their policies are clearly stated

These policies should include the businessโ€™s pawnshop loan application, appraisal, storage and insurance fees, and interest and that you can easily reach their customer service by phone or email.

4. Check Yelp reviews for your local pawnshop.

Yelp in many cities is very active with reviews from local customers who share frank feedback about any number of businesses near you, including pawnshops. You can spend time understanding how much you trust various reviewersโ€™ opinions since you can see all of the companies theyโ€™ve reviewed. The pawnshop owner has the opportunity to respond to public complaints.

5. See if your local pawnshop is part of a national chain.

Below is a few national pawnshops with online and brick-and-mortar retail locations. These tend to be run more professionally, with better customer service and more information online for you to learn about the corporation.

Pawn shop chains include:

  • Cash America Pawn
  • EZ Pawn
  • First Cash Pawn
  • Pawn America

6. Consider all options you have for selling your items for cash before going to a pawnshop.

Finally, donโ€™t forget that some items you may consider selling to be at the nearest pawnshop instead of online or through the mail. Other good options include Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or other local sites where the buyer can come in person to purchase your item. Again, pawnbrokersโ€™ business model includes taking 50% or more of the sale price as their commission, so you may fare better selling elsewhere.

While itโ€™s easy to sell small valuables like jewelry, flatware, coins (including coins worth money) and gold online, selling larger items (e.g. musical instruments, power tools, etc.) or items with shipping challenges (e.g. firearms) can be an expensive hassle.

If you have bulky or heavy items to sell, consider searching for pawnbrokers near you instead of trying to sell them on a platform that requires you to pay shipping costs on top of everything else. Shipping a chainsaw to an online second-hand store will not be a profitable endeavor โ€” no matter what anyone says. Instead, head to your nearest 24 hours pawn shop.

More on pawnshop alternatives below.

How pawnshops work

By definition, a pawnshop offers small loans using collateral that a traditional bank would not accept.

For example, pawn shops typically take jewelry, firearms, electronics and furniture against a cash loan โ€” which your local bank or credit union would not.

Pawnshops offer cash for items you donโ€™t even want, and on a much faster timeline than if you sold your items yourself. The money they offer comes in the form of a loan you must repay back within a specific length of time, usually 30 to 60 days. If you donโ€™t repay the โ€œloan,โ€ theyโ€™ll keep the items you put up as collateral.

This is usually the plan all along. While some pawnshop regulars do use their items as collateral for a short-term loan, but there are just as many who have no intention of coming back for their stuff.

When you use a pawnshop that way, youโ€™re really just selling your items in the fastest, easiest way possible โ€” albeit for less money than you might get elsewhere. Still, the important keyword here is โ€œmight.โ€ You may get more or less money if you sell your stuff yourself, but you wonโ€™t really know unless you try.

How do pawnshops determine value?

Pawnbrokers base the value of your item on an appraised value, condition and what the pawnshop thinks he or she can sell the item for. They make these estimates based on research tools, recent sales, experience, and in the case of gold and jewelry, market rates for silver and other precious metals and gemstones.

How much money can you get from a pawnshop?

Expect about 50% of the resale value if you sell or pawn your item to a pawnshop. More on that here.

How much does a pawnshop make?

You do the math: If a pawnshop sells a diamond ring for $1,000 but pays the seller 50% of that diamond's resale value, the pawnbroker makes $500 revenue on that ring.

How pawnshop loans work

If you donโ€™t want to sell your item at a pawnshop, but still need the money ASAP, you can get a loan from the pawnshop.

Pawnshop loans are based on the value, condition and resale potential of the item you bring into the pawnshop. This is how a pawnshop loan works:

  1. Bring your item to the pawnshop, where you will be made an offer for a loan.
  2. You leave your jewelry or other item at the pawnshop as collateral in return for a cash loan with a set term with documentation (often called a โ€œpawnshop loan ticketโ€).
  3. You walk away with your cash. If you return with your ticket within the set terms of the loan โ€” typically 30 days or more, you cash in your ticket in exchange for your item.

Sound too good to be true? It is.

A pawnshop loan will never equate to 100% of the value of your item. Instead, expect about half of the resale value of the item, plus a pawnshop can legally charge you fees for storage, appraisal, and insurance.

For example, if you bring in a diamond engagement ring that is worth $2,000, a pawnshop may loan you $1,000 for 30 days, and charge you $150 in fees โ€” which equates to an APR of 182% APR.

You must be 18 years old to do business with a pawnshop, provide proof of identity, and in many cases, proof of purchase or proof of ownership of the item. In other words: Donโ€™t try to sell hot items to a pawnshop.

Pawnshops only loan you 25% to 80% of an itemโ€™s resale value

Pawnshops normally give you significantly less than the retail value of your items โ€” anywhere between 25% to 80%.

If you are trying to unload a diamond engagement ring that might sell today for $4,000, for example, you could walk away from the pawnshop with as little as $1,000 in your pocket. Thatโ€™s better than nothing, of course, but far below the market rate of your valuable.

This is part of the reason why it is rarely advisable to sell your engagement ring and gold and silver jewelry at a pawnshop โ€” and consider selling them online instead:

  • More money right away
  • No steep hidden fees
  • Guaranteed return if you donโ€™t agree to the sales price
  • Payment within 24 hours

How much interest do pawnbrokers or pawnshops charge?

In the event of a loan, many pawnshops charge interest rates between 12% and 24% on top of storage costs and insurance fees, according to the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau. If you want your jewelry or guns back, plan to pony up a lot more cash than you received in the first place.

If you get a $1,000 loan on a gun, you can pay as much as $200 in interest and fees โ€” which goes straight to the pawnshop owner.

The pawnshop also has to pay rent, insurance, utilities, salaries and taxes for employees and other business expenses.

Investopedia reports that pawnshop net profit margins average 15 to 25%.

How long do you have to pay back a pawnshop loan?

Typically, you have 30 days to pay back a pawnshop loan, though this can be negotiated or extended.

What happens if I donโ€™t pay back my pawnshop loan?

If you are not able to repay the loan with the fees within the agreed-upon time, the pawnshop can legally keep the item and sell it. You may have gotten a quick $1,000 for your ring, but had you sold it outright to a reputable jewelry buyer, you would have $2,000.

Pros of pawnshop loans

  • Quick money
  • No credit check, co-signer or bank account required
  • Wonโ€™t hurt your credit score or appear on your credit report
  • Receive multiple loans

Cons of pawnshop loans

  • Super-high interest rates
  • Risk of not getting your item back, having received a fraction of its value โ€” though you may be able to negotiate an extension or renewal for the pawnshop loan.
  • In-person transaction, which may not be convenient for you, and may be intimidating or otherwise uncomfortable.
  • Pawnshops buy a wide range of items, making it difficult for the pawnbroker to be an expert in everything they offer, and making it hard to give an informed quote for every transaction.

Alternatives to pawnshops

Here are other ways you can get rid of your old items for cash:

Pawn shop FAQs

Why do people sell to pawnshops?

Pawn shops are a quick way to make much-needed money. Because of the loan component, people who really donโ€™t want to sell their used items can sometimes buy back their collateral when they have the money in the future โ€” which is not possible when you outright sell your possession.

Why use a pawnshop vs. a consignment shop?

Both pawnshops and consignment shops will pay you around 50% of your itemโ€™s retail value, up-front, in cash.

The question for any sale of your used item should be: Can I get a better price elsewhere? and, How much work do I have to do to sell this elsewhere?

For clothes, a site like Crossroads Trading, or Buffalo Exchange (in-person or online) likely will be the fastest way to sell a pile of your used clothes, quickly, for some cash. If you have very high-end, luxury items, another consignment store may also be a good option.

It is very hard to sell your items yourself directly via online marketplaces, as these typically only work if you have a true online โ€˜store,โ€™ with a lot of products, are experienced at photography, merchandising, online marketing and otherwise running a retail site.

Local consignment is also often a good option for selling your furniture, as furniture consignment stores tend to be experts in vintage, used and antique furniture, and can sell large quantities as customers come to them shopping specifically for used household goods. Plus, shipping furniture is difficult, time-consuming and expensive.

A pawnshop may be a great option if you need cash more than you need your gun, but many other items are better sold for a higher price online to experts who buy electronics, gold, jewelry, and phones.

So youโ€™re swiping through online dating profiles and come across your ideal match โ€” attractive, well educated, eye-catching bio, not a mirror selfie in sight. Thereโ€™s just one thing that stops you from immediately swiping rightโ€ฆ this person is a widower.

Whatโ€™s it like to date a widower? Will it be complicated? Can this person ever really love me? Are they really ready to date?

John Polo, author of how to date a widow 101 and two other books, had those same questions when his mom tried to set him up with a widow when he was 22 years old.

Polo couldnโ€™t wrap his head around competing with a former spouse and ultimately decided not to meet her.

โ€œIโ€™m not competing with a โ€˜dadโ€™ man,โ€ Polo told her.

Five years later, Polo reunited with his high school sweetheart, Michelle.

After two years together, Michelle was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer and ultimately passed away at the age of 30. Polo was 31.

โ€œTo say that I have changed as a human would be an understatement,โ€ he says. โ€œAnd to say that the way I see the world has changed, would be the same.โ€

Are you ready to date a widow?

Living up to the legacy of a former spouse can feel like an insurmountable challenge โ€” especially knowing that in another reality, your partner would probably still be with that person.

The honest truth is that dating a widower will be complicated. There will likely be pain, good and bad memories, and potentially complicated family dynamics.

But that doesnโ€™t mean widows are undateable.

If you are dating a widower or thinking about dating a widower, here are some things you should know:

  1. They will always love their spouse.
  2. Those feelings are not a reflection on you.
  3. You have to be patient.
  4. Try not to compare yourself to their spouse.
  5. Your partner needs room to be open.
  6. The loss will always be a part of them.

Dating a widower FAQs

1. They will always love their spouse.

Polo says the love of his late wife and the loss of his late wife will walk with him for the rest of his life.

That doesnโ€™t mean, however, that a widower will love someone new any less.

โ€œYes, we can love deeply again. Very deeply,โ€ Polo says.

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œI dated a widow (and I am a widow). Be prepared to see things still around the house that reflect the passed spouse. I donโ€™t think you can be jealous and date a widow. My BF still had pictures of the wife all over the house. Be prepared for family/friends to disapprove.โ€ โ€” Bethany

2. Those feelings are not a reflection on you.

A woman facing away in a field. Tips on dating a widower: 6 things you need to know. Find them all here.

About a year ago, Polo made this social media post to explain how a widower might approach a new relationship:

โ€œMy wife was AMAZING. Absolutely amazing. But the truth is she is not the only amazing woman to ever be born. As I hope to fall in love again one day, I donโ€™t compare new love interests to her. That would be a disservice to them. To me. AND to her. She was 1 in 7 billion. Just as I am. Just as you are. There will never be another Michelle. Just as there will never be another John. Or another โ€œJohn and Michelle.โ€ When looking for love again, Iโ€™m not looking for another Michelle. Iโ€™m simply looking to find another human, whom I adore.โ€

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œKnow they will bring up fond memories of places or things that remind them. That there is enough love to keep our dead spouse in our heart and someone new. That we might be scared to get too attached at first in fear of losing them too. I lost my husband when my son was just 6 months old. So the thought of spending time away from him to date is anxiety causing. I need someone flexible that can understand that my son comes first.โ€ โ€” Ellen

3. You have to be patient.

Nancy Landrum, MA, author, and relationship coach, is a widow whose second husband was a widow. She says coming from a similar place helped her understand her partnerโ€™s grief.

โ€œOn a few dates when his energy was low, I didn't take it personally,โ€ Landrum says. โ€œI understood that it had been less than a year since Jim's wife of 22 years had passed, and some days, he just missed her.โ€

Landrum recognized that cycling in and out of missing the past relationship is a normal part of the grieving process.

โ€œI gave him time to move through the grieving process at a speed that was needed so that he could emotionally close the door on his love for his first wife and be able to give his whole heart to me,โ€ she says.

She says the friendship she and her husband built in the first few months of dating was the very best foundation for their remarriage

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œThereโ€™s a big disparity between moving on and moving forward. No one simply stops loving our late spouses. We make room to love again. Triggers will happen, without warning โ€” itโ€™s uncomfortable and feels like a giant herd of elephants sitting on our chest.โ€ โ€” Lana

4. Try not to compare yourself to their spouse.

Polo says it is a widowโ€™s responsibility to get to a place where they do not compare potential partners to their late spouse. As someone who is dating a widower, it is also your responsibility not to compare.

โ€œStanding on your own two feet and being the best version of yourself that you can be is always the best approach,โ€ he says.

While itโ€™s normal and human to be uncertain or even insecure about dating a widower, Polo offers this very raw perspective:

โ€œAs a widowed person, our person died. They are dead. They are not coming back. Itโ€™s not like they are an ex of ours who lives a few miles away.โ€

His advice?

Communicate about your insecurities in a kind, caring, and loving way. Any sign of jealousy can be extremely off-putting to a widowed person.

โ€œDonโ€™t show any jealousy if there are pictures of the family with the other spouse,โ€ Polo says. โ€œItโ€™s important for the children and doesnโ€™t mean they care any less for you.โ€

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œIt takes a long time to heal from losing the person you thought youโ€™d spend your life with. Also, try not to judge if compared to the deceased. Again, it takes a long time to unlearn habits/familiarity.โ€ โ€” Kate

5. Your partner needs room to be open.

Polo says that while you should never push the widower to speak about their late spouse or the loss in general, the more you give that person the space to do so, the more they will appreciate you.

โ€œAnd if weโ€™re being honest, the more he will fall for you, as well,โ€ Polo says. โ€œThere is something just so beautiful about any human opening the door for us to speak about our lost loved ones, but especially when the person we are now dating opens that door for us to speak about our deceased partners.โ€

He says speaking positively about the late spouse can also go a long way.

Landrum says dating a widower requires empathy and acceptance. She recommends following the other personโ€™s lead:

โ€œI looked for his willingness to create a new future, whether it was with me or someone else.โ€

While you can comfort your partner, remember, you are not their therapist. If your partner needs help to cope with a loss, they might benefit from therapy.

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œMy two best friends were married and the husband was killed in a car accident when their baby was 5 months old. Her new husband has been nothing short of incredible. They've had a second child. He adopted her first child. They all have the same last name now, which includes the deceased husband's last name. And every year for Thanksgiving, they host the deceased husband's family. The deceased husband's father walked my friend down the aisle for her second marriage. It is one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed. There is no jealousy or having to choose. Only love and support and inclusivity.โ€ โ€” Tricia

6. The loss will always be a part of them.

Another important thing to remember about dating a widower is that the pain of the past never truly goes away, even if the widow finds someone new who makes them happy.

โ€œAs widowed people, we live in a society where many act like once we find love again, we should be โ€˜good to go,โ€™ Polo says. โ€œThatโ€™s just not how it works, though.โ€

Polo says just as the love of his late spouse changed him, so did her passing โ€” but thatโ€™s not necessarily a bad thing.

โ€œI am a kinder, more loving and more caring person today than ever before,โ€ Polo says. โ€œThe ability to enjoy life more, after realizing just how short and precious it can be, is something that is now my truth.โ€

But Polo says that the pain, trauma and loss he endured will not magically go away no matter what level of inner-peace he obtains or happiness he is able to find. He offers this comparison:

โ€œImagine a parent who loses a child, and then has another child. They are going to love that second child with all of their heart. All of it. But the pain of losing that first child is also going to walk with them.โ€

Real-life advice from a widow:

โ€œWhile yes we may tend to put the dead spouse on a pedestal, there is often A LOT more going on for a widowโ€ฆreassessing priorities, money, protecting kids, family/community dynamics, a need to find a cause to channel what youโ€™ve learned/give back. I would say, be willing to acknowledge, embrace, even support the presence of those dynamics. If you find yourself judging/resisting them, itโ€™s best for you to move on. On the other hand, a widow knows how precious life and you ARE. Sheโ€™s going to really appreciate the right person for her.โ€ โ€” Kate

Dating a widower FAQs:

What do I need to know about dating a widower?

Polo says these are the basic things to know about dating a widower:

  • They are always going to love their spouse. Always.
  • That love is NOT a reflection in any way, shape, or form of the feelings they have (or will develop) for you.
  • That love does not mean they will love you less.
  • Widows can love again, just as deeply as they once did.

โ€œWe donโ€™t expect you to always get it,โ€ Polo says. โ€œIn fact, we know that there is no way for you to always get it. We do, however, expect you to try, to be loving and caring.โ€

He says itโ€™s important to allow a widow to speak about their late partner and have the space to keep their memory alive.

โ€œDoing so will not in any way, shape or form take away from what we have,โ€ Polo says. โ€œIf anything, it will simply make us adore you that much more.โ€

How long should a widow wait before dating?

There really is no set amount of time a widow should wait before dating because no one grieves in the exact same way. Polo implores people to reject the idea that there is an โ€œacceptableโ€ amount of time a widow should refrain from dating.

โ€œEach of us is unique, and creating a โ€˜they shouldnโ€™t date for a yearโ€™ rule for all widowed people can be a very slippery slope,โ€ Polo says.

He says some widows are ready to date within a few months, and some will never date again.

โ€œThe choice is so incredibly personal, and each personโ€™s loss and grief are so incredibly different, just as their desire to date again, or not date again, is different,โ€ Polo says.

Why is dating a widower so hard?

Amanda Rose, CEO and founder of Prestige Connections, a matchmaking service with locations across the U.S., says it can be harder to date a widower than someone who has gone through a divorce or breakup for several reasons:

  • Widow didn't choose to end the relationship
  • Traumatic ending of the relationship can make it harder to move on
  • Widow may have been with their spouse for a long time and created a full life together

โ€œIt's hard for the widow to move forward and start a life with someone new because they're so used to a certain way of living with a partner,โ€ Rose says.

The widower may also put unrealistic expectations of their former spouse on the new partner โ€” maybe even unintentionally โ€” which can put unhealthy pressure on the relationship.

โ€œI've worked with widows that have been single for 5+ years, and they still compare current potential partners with their former spouse,โ€ Rose says. โ€œIt creates a disconnect with the new partner because they feel like they have to live up to the former spouse, and that's just not fair to the new partner.โ€

Rose says it's crucial for a widower to seek deep healing after a spouse's death before they decide to date again. That includes learning how to separate the expectations of the new partner from the old partner.

Polo says itโ€™s normal and human to compare ourselves to others, but what we do with those comparisons is key.

โ€œNot living in the land of comparisons should definitely be the goal we all strive for,โ€ he says.

He says that while dating a widower can be very hard, but it can also be amazing. His advice? Keep an open mind.

โ€œDo not assume anything just because they are widowed, but rather look at the individual for who they are before making an assessment,โ€ Polo says.

He says for every widowed person who is ready to love again, there is a widowed person who is not ready to love again. The same can be said for whether a widow is a good partner or a toxic partner.

If you want to make money on your unwanted items, there are literally thousands of options โ€” but not all of them are created equal.

Mercari is one of the top online resale sites, having helped millions of people unload items they no longer want โ€” everything from shoes to holiday decor. But is worth it? Here's what we think:

What is Mercari?

Mercari is an online consignment shop. The company bills itself as โ€œThe Selling App,โ€ a place for users to list items for sale that they no longer want or use. The platform accepts most items, as long as they are capable of being shipped.

Is selling on Mercari worth it?

Is Mercari legit?

Launched in 2013, Mercari is a legit business with 2020 revenue of $636.8 million. With more than 644 customer reviews, the company has an A rating with the BBB. Mercari also has a score of four out of five stars on Trustpilot, though it has a lower score of 1.5 out of five stars on SiteJabber. So, is Mercari legit? Yes.

How does Mercari work? What sellers should know:

When you sell on Mercari, you can choose to sell on their traditional online marketplace, but you can also sign up for  Mercari Local if it is available in your area.

If so, youโ€™ll get a prompt during signup to opt in to Mercari Local, a subset of the marketplace that only displays your items to people within a certain radius of your home.

The process of selling on Mercari is similar to selling on Poshmark. All you need to do is create an account.

You can sign up using your Facebook profile or use an email and password, and then you can immediately get started.

To list an item, youโ€™ll need to:

  1. Click โ€œSell.โ€
  2. Upload up to 12 photos of the item you want to list. Try to include photos of any damage.
  3. Enter a title and description for your item. You should be as descriptive as possible.
  4. Tag the item with hashtags that buyers might search.
  5. Select a category for your item.
  6. Enter the brand.
  7. Select the condition of the item, from Poor to New.
  8. Select the color for the item.
  9. Enter shipping information (where you will be shipping from, whether you will pay for shipping, if you want to use Mercari Local).
  10. Enter a listing price.

After your item sells, you will need to package and ship your item to the buyer. If you choose the local option, Mercari will schedule a day/time to pick up your item and deliver it to the other person (no packaging required).

In both cases, youโ€™ll receive payment once the buyer rates your item.

Mercari also has a mobile app available on iOS and Android devices.

Here is Raven410โ€™s experience as a new Mercari seller:

Signing up with Mercari was easy, but it took me about 30 minutes to create my listing, update my profile and get verified. Verification means you have linked your email, phone number, and submitted a government-issued ID (driverโ€™s license, passport, or state ID).

You can also choose to link your seller profile to Facebook, but I didnโ€™t want to do that. I prefer to keep that separate.

Since I signed up on my desktop computer, I had to download the app to verify my government ID. In retrospect, it would have been easier to sign up through the app. But, itโ€™s nice to know I can use the app or my browser on my desktop to buy or sell on Mercari.

After I took pictures of my ID and a photo of myself through the Mercari app, it took about five minutes for my verification to be approved. Then, I got a Profile Verified badge. I figured that would add to my credibility.

I took seven pictures of my item (you can add up to 12), uploaded them and filled out the details.

Even though I signed up for Mercari Local, I decided to skip offering it on my listing because it costs $10.99. Since my item is not expensive it did not make sense to me to pay the $10.99 fee and it didn't seem reasonable to ask the buyer to pay it, especially with free shipping being the norm these days.

However, if I had a pricier item, Iโ€™d try Mercari Local. It seems like a hassle-free option, since you donโ€™t need to pack the item or ship it. A Mercari driver picks it up from your home and delivers it on your behalf.

I liked that Mercari showed me how much I would make on the sale before listing the item. It helped me to price the item for what I was willing to sell it for. I also did a quick check for the item on Mercari and Amazon to make sure my price was competitive.

Who pays shipping on Mercari?

When you sell on Mercari, you can choose to pay for shipping or charge the buyer for shipping.

If you pay for shipping through Mercari, you can print the prepaid label and send your package; if not, you will need to purchase your own label. Note: If you provide your own label, you must provide Mercari with the tracking information so that they can track the status of the shipment.

If you choose to have the buyer pay, the cost of the label will be added to their total at checkout. A prepaid label will be created and sent to your email (or you can download it from the Order Status page).

Mercari protects shipments up to $200, unless you choose to ship with your own label.

How do you get paid on Mercari?

When a buyer confirms theyโ€™ve received your order and you both rate the transaction, money will be deposited into your Mercari account. There are a few things you can do with the money:

  • Purchase items on Mercari
  • Transfer the money to your bank account ($2 fee if amount is under $10)
  • Transfer the money to your debit card via Instant Pay ($2 fee)

How much does the average Mercari seller make?

What you make on Mercari depends on the value, quantity, and quality of the items you sell. A 2021 Parade article reported โ€‹โ€‹the average U.S. seller on Mercari makes $114 per month or $1,300 per year.

33 things to sell to make money from the stuff around your house

Mercari fees for sellers

Listing an item on Mercari is free. However, when your item sells, there are Mercari fees to pay. Mercari charges 2.9% plus $0.30 for each payment received from the buyer. You will also pay a $2 fee if you choose to direct deposit a payment under $10 to your bank account and if you choose the Instant Pay option.

Mercari selling fee: How much does Mercari take?

Among the Mercari fees is the selling fee. Mercari does take a cut of your sale once your listing is bought. This fee currently starts at 10% of the listing price.

As the seller, you must also cover any shipping fees to get your item to the buyer. You can choose to ship the item on your own, or purchase shipping through Mercariโ€™s partnerships with USPS, FedEx, or UPS.

As you think about what to sell your stuff for, consider the Mercari fees you will be charged.

Selling on Mercari? 6 tips to be more successful

  1. Be descriptive. When selling on Mercari, the more descriptive you can be, the more likely youโ€™ll sell your item. Why? Because you remove any doubt in the buyerโ€™s mind. Make sure your headlines, descriptions, and photos are very detailed. And if your item has any damage, include photos of it!
  2. Include measurements and details about material. Buyers wonโ€™t buy an item if theyโ€™re not sure what itโ€™s made out of or whether or not itโ€™ll fit. That only makes sense! Whenever possible, include this information.
  3. Offer free shipping. While not a requirement, offering free shipping will definitely increase the chances that your item will sell fast.
  4. Add 10% to your listing price. If youโ€™re listing an item that youโ€™re confident will sell (and sell quickly) then consider adding 10% to your list price. This will help you cover your fees and shipping, meaning more money in your pocket.
  5. Consider dropping prices. If you list an item and it doesnโ€™t sell quickly, consider dropping the price. Some buyers only buy after an item is marked down. Thatโ€™s another reason to list for higher at first: It gives you the opportunity to drop prices later without actually forfeiting much money.

Clearly document your items in pictures, including any damage. Clearly showing the damage to your item will help safeguard you from scammers who try to claim your item has unreported damage.

Can you get scammed on Mercari?

Mercari acts as an online marketplace that connects sellers with buyers. That means you can rest assured that Mercari is legit and is not a scam. That being said, unscrupulous buyers and sellers alike can be found on Mercari just as they can be found on other marketplace websites.

For this reason, Mercari has put in place a number of buyer and seller protections to reduce the likelihood of being scammed or taken advantage of.

Protection against scams on Mercari

If you are a buyer, Mercari protects you by not releasing your payment to the seller until you receive the item you have ordered and confirm that it meets your expectations. If you donโ€™t receive the item, or receive an item that doesnโ€™t match the description in the listing, then you can request a full refund within three days of receipt.

If you are a seller, Mercari recommends that you use their prepaid labels, as these include shipping protection up to $200 for items that are damaged, lost, or stolen in transit.

In order to reduce the likelihood that a buyer will request a refund, itโ€™s important that you are very clear in your itemโ€™s listing/description. Mercari will always side with the buyer in cases where the item was not described correctly or contains undisclosed damage like a rip, etc. With this in mind, be as detailed as possible and if your item has any damage, try to include photos that highlight this damage to remove any chance of the buyer complaining in the future.

Avoid these common Mercari scams

If you feel a transaction isnโ€™t on the up and up, involve Mercari customer service immediately. Itโ€™s important to act fast to get the best possible outcome.

Keep an eye out for the following known scams:

  • False condition description of item โ€“ Always take time to read the description thoroughly. Words that attempt to hard-sell an item like โ€œperfectโ€ or โ€œamazingโ€ are red flags. Descriptions that sound too good to be true usually are. Look for realistic descriptions and lots of pictures from different angles.
  • Selling fakes as a high-end brand โ€“ Itโ€™s OK to ask for more pictures or information if you suspect an item is misrepresented. But when in doubt, pass on the item and keep looking.
  • Seller ships the wrong item but tells you you can keep it โ€“ If you receive a different item and the seller claims it was a mistake, but asks you to accept and keep that item while they ship you the correct one, refuse. Mercari will assume you got what you paid for if you accept it.
  • Buyer wants to purchase your items outside of Mercari โ€“ Keep all buying and selling on the platform. Avoid giving out your personal contact information. Mercari offers no protection for buyers and sellers outside of the app.
  • Buyer returns a different item โ€“ Some buyers receive an item but process a return and send back a different item. Unfortunately the burden of proof is on the seller. Check buyer ratings and refuse a sale if you feel uneasy. Some people make videos of opening returned packages for proof.
  • Address changes during the shipment โ€“ Since Mercari allows flexibility in shipping, sellers can use whatever carrier they prefer. But keep an eye on the tracking information they send. If you notice that the delivery address changes during the shipment, that is a sign of a scam. They are likely shipping a box of worthless items or trash shown as delivered so they can claim you received it.
  • Delayed resolution โ€“ If you have an issue with a seller, create a case so you can get customer service involved early in the process. Some scammers are trying to delay the response so that buyers will miss the three-day window to report an issue.
  • Instant flagging of new listings โ€“ If your listing is reported as soon as you create it, it might be a competitor selling the same item who is trying to sell the same thing. Consider listing the item on another site because multiple flags will limit your selling on Mercari.

Is Mercari legit FAQs

Is Mercari a good place to sell?

Short answer: Yes! If you have clothing, shoes, or handbags that you no longer wear or use, selling them on Mercari can be a great way to bring in some extra cash that you can use to pay down debt, fund your emergency savings, or treat yourself to a new outfit that you actually want.

Is Mercari safe to purchase from?

Yes, Mercari is a safe platform to use. It offers the following protections:

  • Escrow payment system (money is not released until buyer receives item and rates seller)
  • Buyer and seller ratings
  • Secure payments and protection of user data
  • Automatic detection of use violations
  • Dedicated customer service team to resolve buyer and seller issues

How do I know if a Mercari seller is legit?

Check the sellerโ€™s profile before making a purchase. Legit sellers have good reviews, are verified, and will accept and answer questions without a hassle.

  • Keep your transaction within the Mercari app
  • Create a return request within three days of receipt if you have an issue
  • Donโ€™t rate the seller (rating the seller completes the transaction)

3 sites like Mercari

There are lots of other sites like Mercari to sell your unwanted items. Here are a few:

eBay

eBay was one of the first online marketplaces to buy and sell unwanted items, and it still remains the industry gold standard. eBay boasts an A+ accredited rating from the Better Business Bureau, though customer reviews are less favorable.

eBay chargers sellers 12.9% of the sale price or lower, plus $0.30 per order. Combined with Mercariโ€™s transaction fee of 2.9% for sellers, their fees are the same. However, eBay doesnโ€™t require buyers to rate their items before paying its sellers. If you sell on eBay, your payment will be directly deposited into your checking account once the buyer submits payment and you ship the item. You can choose from a daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly payout schedule. Mercari holds the money in your Mercari account until you spend it on the site or initiate a transfer.

Poshmark

Poshmark and Mercari are similar in many ways. Both websites act as an online consignment shop designed to connect buyers with sellers. Both are fairly straightforward to use. Both accept clothing, jewelry, and other items.

But there are certain key differences. While both Poshmark and Mercari are legit businesses that have been around for years, Mercari has much more favorable reviews, and a higher BBB score than Poshmark, implying that both buyers and sellers are happier with Mercari than Poshmark.

Poshmark charges 20% of the list price of a sale โ€” twice what Mercari charges. That being said, for that fee Poshmark handles all transaction fees, shipping, and customer service, while selling through Mercari will require the seller to provide shipping at their own expense or request the buyer pay for shipping.

Thredup

thredUP is different from Mercari and other online consignment shops for a couple reasons: 1. thredUP is exclusively a resale site for clothing and accessories, while Mercariโ€™s marketplace includes clothing, electronics, decor, and other items. 2. thredUP sells your items for you.

When you want to sell with thredUP, you send in your items, and they professionally photograph and list them on their site, setting the price they think your items will sell for on the site.

Because they โ€œdo the work for you,โ€ thredUP fees are much higher, ranging from 20% to over 90% of the selling price depending on the price of the item (the higher the price of the item, the lower the commission fee).

thredUP has an A- rating from the Better Business Bureau, slightly lower than Mercariโ€™s A rating, and customer reviews on the BBB and Trustpilot are slightly less positive.
