The job market feels upside down. Experienced office workers are getting laid off, while hospitals, factories, utilities, transportation systems, and repair shops still can’t find enough qualified people.

The strongest openings tend to involve patients, expensive machinery, safety rules, or equipment that must be fixed in person. Employers can use better software, but they still need trained people to examine patients, climb towers, troubleshoot electrical systems, and keep essential equipment running.

These careers have realistic training routes that can be completed in less than two years, though you may need licensing, certification, or additional training after you’re hired. Healthcare employers report hundreds of thousands of openings, while technical industries continue to struggle with shortages of qualified maintenance workers. 

1. Cardiac sonographer

Cardiac sonographers, also called echocardiographers, use ultrasound equipment to create moving images of the heart. You position patients, adjust the machine, measure blood flow, and capture the views a cardiologist needs. The work calls for technical skill, patience, and a steady bedside manner. Some patients are frightened, short of breath, or too sick to move easily. Median pay for the broader sonography occupation is about $42.95 per hour.

An accelerated cardiac sonography certificate or associate program may take roughly 18 to 22 months when classes run year-round. Programs include clinical rotations, so this isn’t training you can complete entirely online. Certification can make you more competitive after graduation. Hospitals, cardiology practices, outpatient imaging centers, and mobile testing companies hire cardiac sonographers. Employment for sonographers is projected to grow 13% through 2034, with about 5,800 openings expected each year. The growing number of older adults with heart and vascular conditions keeps trained scanners busy.

2. Respiratory therapist

Respiratory therapists care for people who can’t breathe normally. You may give breathing treatments, manage ventilators, draw blood for testing, assist during emergencies, or teach patients how to use oxygen equipment at home. The job can take you from a newborn intensive care unit to an emergency room in the same shift. Median pay is about $38.68 per hour.

Most respiratory therapists complete an associate degree and pass licensing exams. Standard programs may take two academic years, but accelerated year-round options can finish in about 20 to 22 months. The schedule is demanding because it includes science courses, lab work, and supervised clinical shifts. Hospitals employ most respiratory therapists, though rehabilitation facilities, home respiratory companies, and sleep clinics also hire them. Employment is projected to grow 12% through 2034, creating about 8,800 openings per year. Longer-term workforce estimates also point to a shortage of respiratory therapists as experienced workers retire and more patients need treatment for chronic lung problems.





3. Occupational therapy assistant

Occupational therapy assistants help people relearn everyday tasks after an injury, stroke, illness, or disability. That could mean helping an older adult practice dressing safely, showing a child how to improve hand control, or teaching someone how to use adaptive equipment. You work from a treatment plan created by an occupational therapist, but much of the hands-on coaching is yours. Median pay is about $32.86 per hour.

You’ll need an accredited associate program and whatever license or certification is required where you work. Accelerated programs with year-round classes may finish in 18 to 22 months, including fieldwork. Look closely at the actual graduation calendar because some programs advertise four semesters but pause during the summer. Employers include rehabilitation hospitals, nursing facilities, schools, home health agencies, and outpatient therapy practices. Demand for occupational therapy assistants is projected to grow 19% through 2034. About 7,900 openings for assistants and aides are expected each year, helped by an aging population and the need for lower-cost rehabilitation services. 

4. Physical therapist assistant

Physical therapist assistants guide patients through exercises and treatments that improve movement, strength, and balance. You might help someone walk after joint surgery, work with an injured athlete, or teach a patient how to manage pain without making the injury worse. It is active work that involves lifting, demonstrating movements, tracking progress, and encouraging people who may be frustrated. Median pay is about $31.50 per hour.

An accredited associate program is required, followed by licensing or certification. Many programs follow a two-year college calendar, but some accelerated options run continuously and finish in about 18 to 22 months. Clinical placements are part of the training, so plan for daytime hours even when some coursework is offered online. Physical therapist assistants work in outpatient clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, and home healthcare. Employment for assistants alone is projected to grow 22% through 2034. Demand is being pushed by joint replacements, sports injuries, chronic conditions, and the rehabilitation needs of older patients.

5. Surgical technologist

Surgical technologists prepare operating rooms before a procedure begins. You sterilize and organize instruments, check supplies, help position the patient, and pass tools to the surgical team. During the operation, you must notice immediately when an instrument is missing or the sterile field has been compromised. Median pay is about $30.21 per hour.

Certificate programs commonly take 12 to 18 months, while accelerated associate programs may fit within 20 to 22 months. Training includes anatomy, infection control, medical terminology, equipment handling, and supervised time in operating rooms. Certification is preferred or required by many employers. Hospitals remain major employers, but outpatient surgery centers have expanded the number of procedures they perform. The occupation is projected to grow steadily, with about 8,700 openings for surgical assistants and technologists each year. Hospitals and surgery centers continue to report difficulty recruiting enough trained surgical technologists, especially for early, late, and on-call shifts. 

6. Neurodiagnostic technologist

Neurodiagnostic technologists record the electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. You may perform EEG tests, monitor patients for seizures, assist with nerve studies, or watch brain activity during surgery. Getting a useful recording takes more than attaching electrodes. You must calm patients, spot equipment problems, recognize unusual patterns, and respond when someone has a medical event. Average pay for electroneurodiagnostic technologists is about $36 per hour.





Training options include 12-to-18-month certificates and accelerated associate programs. Clinical experience matters because employers need people who can work with actual patients, not just pass a written test. Professional credentials in EEG, nerve conduction, sleep testing, or surgical monitoring can raise your value later. Jobs are found in hospitals, epilepsy monitoring units, sleep centers, neurology practices, and surgical monitoring companies. The field is small, which is one reason qualified applicants can be difficult to find. Reports have placed vacancy rates in neurodiagnostic laboratories in the double digits, particularly for technologists with specialized monitoring skills. 

7. Aircraft maintenance technician

Year-round aviation maintenance schools can prepare students for airframe and powerplant certification in roughly 18 to 21 months. Another path is a structured employer or military training program that meets federal experience requirements. Airlines, cargo carriers, aircraft manufacturers, repair stations, corporate flight departments, and government contractors all hire these technicians. Employment is projected to grow faster than the overall job market. More importantly, the industry is facing a replacement problem as a large share of experienced mechanics approaches retirement. Current forecasts call for hundreds of thousands of new maintenance technicians worldwide, and U.S. employers continue to compete for certified workers.

8. Avionics technician

Avionics technicians handle the electronics that let an aircraft navigate, communicate, monitor weather, and operate safely. You test wiring, replace faulty components, install updated equipment, and troubleshoot problems that may appear only under certain conditions. A postsecondary avionics certificate can take 12 to 18 months, although some employers prefer applicants who also have broader aircraft maintenance training. Coursework usually covers digital electronics, aircraft wiring, navigation systems, test equipment, and safety procedures. Airlines, repair stations, manufacturers, defense contractors, and business aviation companies hire avionics technicians. The growing amount of electronics inside modern aircraft creates more systems that must be tested, upgraded, and repaired. Avionics is also included in the wider technician shortage affecting aviation, and the training pipeline is not producing enough workers to meet projected demand across technical industries. 

9. Wind turbine service technician

Wind turbine technicians inspect, maintain, and repair the equipment inside utility-scale wind turbines. You climb tall towers, work in tight spaces, test electrical systems, change worn components, and troubleshoot machines that may be miles from the nearest town. Technicians work for turbine manufacturers, utility companies, maintenance contractors, and renewable-energy operators. Employment is projected to grow 50% through 2034, making this one of the fastest-growing occupations in the country. The total number of jobs is smaller than in healthcare or manufacturing, but companies still need technicians near every large group of operating turbines. 





10. Industrial machinery mechanic

A one-year industrial maintenance certificate can teach electrical basics, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, motor controls, and mechanical troubleshooting. Some employers hire trainees with a high school diploma, but formal training gives you a better shot at reaching the higher-paying mechanic roles sooner. Jobs are available in food plants, distribution centers, paper mills, pharmaceutical facilities, utilities, and equipment repair companies. Employment in this group is projected to grow 13% through 2034, with more than 54,000 openings expected annually. A 2026 technician workforce analysis found that graduates were filling only a small share of annual industrial machinery demand.

You’ll continue learning on the job because manufacturers use different diagnostic systems and components. Equipment dealers, rental companies, construction contractors, mines, farms, rail operations, and local government fleets employ these mechanics. Overall employment is projected to grow 6% through 2034, with about 21,700 openings each year. Infrastructure work and the increasing complexity of heavy machinery support demand, while retirements create room for new technicians who can handle both mechanical and electronic problems. 

12. Biomedical equipment technician

Biomedical equipment technicians maintain the machines used to diagnose and treat patients. That may include infusion pumps, heart monitors, sterilizers, hospital beds, defibrillators, and laboratory equipment. Useful subjects include electronics, networking, anatomy, medical terminology, and equipment safety. Apprenticeships and military technical training can also lead into the field. Employers include hospitals, medical-device manufacturers, equipment distributors, independent repair companies, and outpatient facilities. Employment is projected to grow 13% through 2034, producing about 7,300 openings per year. Yet one recent technician supply analysis found that medical-equipment programs were producing graduates for only a small fraction of annual demand. 

13. Instrumentation and controls technician

Instrumentation and controls technicians maintain the sensors and control systems used in factories, power facilities, water plants, refineries, and food-processing operations. You calibrate instruments that measure pressure, temperature, flow, and chemical levels. You also troubleshoot control panels, wiring, valves, and programmable equipment when readings stop making sense. Average pay for an entry-level control and instrument technician is about $38 per hour.





A certificate in industrial instrumentation, process controls, or electrical technology can take 12 to 18 months. Accelerated associate programs may fit within 22 months. You’ll study electricity, sensors, motor controls, calibration, technical drawings, and basic programmable controllers. Employers often provide additional instruction on the exact systems used at their facility. This job stays valuable because a sensor error can spoil a product batch, shut down production, or create a serious safety problem. Manufacturing employers are already struggling to replace experienced maintenance workers, and modern plants need technicians who understand both mechanical equipment and electronic controls. 

14. Semiconductor equipment technician

Semiconductor equipment technicians maintain the machines used to make computer chips. These tools deposit materials, etch patterns, clean wafers, and perform precise measurements inside controlled cleanrooms. You respond to alarms, replace components, run tests, and work with engineers when a machine produces faulty results. Average pay is about $34 per hour.

Community colleges and technical schools offer semiconductor, electronics, vacuum systems, and advanced-manufacturing programs that take six to 18 months. Some employers also recruit graduates from industrial maintenance or mechatronics certificate programs. The work may involve protective clothing, rotating shifts, and long periods on your feet. Chip manufacturers, equipment suppliers, research facilities, and advanced packaging plants hire these technicians. Large manufacturing projects are expanding the need for workers who can keep complex fabrication equipment running. Industry workforce estimates project a gap of roughly 26,400 semiconductor technicians by 2030, which is why companies and colleges are building faster training pipelines.

15. Data center technician

Data center technicians install, test, and replace the physical equipment that keeps online services running. You may rack servers, connect cables, swap failed drives, trace network connections, check alarms, and escort vendors through secure areas. Unlike a remote help-desk job, much of this work requires someone inside the building who can touch the hardware and follow strict security procedures. Average pay is about $36 per hour.

You can prepare with an information technology support certificate, networking coursework, and entry-level hardware certifications. A focused program may take three to 12 months, though employers often value hands-on lab experience more than a long list of online badges. Large cloud companies, banks, hospitals, colocation providers, government contractors, and data center operators hire these workers. The rapid construction of new facilities has increased competition for technicians, electricians, cooling specialists, and maintenance workers. People who understand servers plus basic electrical and cooling systems may have the strongest path to higher-paying facilities roles. 

16. Fiber optic splicing technician

Fiber optic splicing technicians join thin strands of glass cable so internet and communications signals can travel long distances without interruption. You prepare cable, make precise splices, test signal loss, locate damaged sections, and document each connection. The work may happen underground, on utility poles, inside commercial buildings, or in large data centers. Average pay for a fiber optic splicing technician is about $35 per hour.

Training can be much shorter than most jobs on this list. Industry programs may provide about 144 hours of fiber installation and splicing instruction, followed by paid field training. A commercial driver’s license, safety training, or experience with utility construction can also help. Telecommunications companies, broadband contractors, utilities, cable manufacturers, and data center contractors hire splicers. The national broadband expansion has run into a serious labor shortage, with workforce programs estimating the need for tens of thousands of additional technicians. Major network companies have also announced plans to hire thousands of technicians to expand and maintain fiber infrastructure. 

17. Fire alarm service technician

You troubleshoot control panels, replace detectors, test notification devices, inspect wiring, and document results for building owners and fire officials. Low-voltage electrical, alarm systems, or electronics certificate programs usually take six to 12 months. You can then build experience while working toward industry certifications and any license required in your area. Employers include alarm contractors, electrical companies, hospitals, universities, property-management firms, and companies that service warehouses and data centers. Inspections and testing are required on a regular schedule, creating repeat work even when new construction slows. Skilled electrical and maintenance workers remain difficult to recruit, and technicians who can diagnose systems rather than only install devices are especially useful.

18. Railroad signal maintainer

Much of the job is outdoors, and emergency calls can happen at night or during bad weather. Railroads and transit agencies provide substantial training after hiring. An electrical, electronics, industrial maintenance, or telecommunications certificate completed in six to 18 months can make you a stronger candidate for an apprentice position. The work is tightly regulated because most signal duties are considered critical to railroad safety. National employment is expected to remain fairly stable rather than explode, but replacement hiring and transit maintenance vacancies continue to create openings. Signal equipment must be inspected on schedule and repaired quickly, which limits how much of the work can be handled remotely or left to automated systems.
