Some well-paid careers are almost invisible unless you already work in the industry. Their titles rarely appear in career quizzes, and most people have no idea the jobs exist.

Many of these roles involve unusual equipment, strict safety rules, delicate medical work, or specialized scientific knowledge. That can mean more training upfront, but it also limits the number of qualified applicants.

The workplaces are just as varied. You could end up in an operating room, fertility clinic, flavor laboratory, shipyard, factory, pipeline control center, or facial-prosthetics studio.

1. Anaplastologist

An anaplastologist creates lifelike facial and body prostheses for people who have lost an eye, ear, nose, finger, or another body part. Loss can happen because of cancer, an accident, a burn, or a condition present at birth. Each prosthesis must match the person’s skin tone, texture, shape, and movement. The work combines sculpture, anatomy, silicone fabrication, color matching, and patient care.

National pay averages about $46 per hour. This is a tiny profession, but reconstructive medicine creates a steady need for people who can do the work well. There is no single route into the field. Practitioners may study medical illustration, fine art, biomedical science, dental technology, or prosthetics before completing supervised clinical work. Professional certification also requires documented education and practical experience. A computer can help create a basic model, but fitting a prosthesis to a living person still takes an artist’s eye, careful hands, and sensitive conversations with patients.

2. Embryologist

Embryologists work inside fertility laboratories, where they handle eggs, sperm, and developing embryos. Their day may include preparing samples, performing fertilization procedures, checking embryo development, freezing reproductive material, and maintaining tightly controlled laboratory conditions. Small mistakes can affect whether a patient’s treatment succeeds, so accuracy and calm judgment matter.

Average pay is around $44 per hour, with typical salaries ranging from roughly $40 to $48 per hour. Most clinical embryologists begin with a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, reproductive science, or a related subject. Advanced laboratory training and a graduate degree can make it easier to move into senior positions. Fertility clinics, hospital systems, research centers, and reproductive-tissue banks employ these specialists. Employment in biological laboratory work is expected to remain steady, while the personal and regulated nature of fertility treatment protects the most sensitive tasks from simple automation. Machines can monitor an incubator, but trained people still make the calls that affect each patient’s treatment.





3. Electrophysiology technologist

An electrophysiology technologist helps doctors diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms. During a procedure, the technologist places monitoring equipment, operates specialized recording systems, tracks electrical signals inside the heart, and helps the medical team use catheters safely. The work takes place in a cardiac catheterization or electrophysiology lab rather than a regular exam room.

National pay averages about $56 per hour. People often enter through cardiovascular technology, radiologic technology, nursing, respiratory care, or another allied-health field. Employers may also seek the Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist credential after the required education and clinical experience. The broader cardiovascular technology field is expected to produce thousands of openings each year as workers retire and more patients need heart testing and treatment. This job is difficult to hand off to software because the technologist must watch the patient, troubleshoot equipment, recognize dangerous changes, and respond immediately when a procedure does not go as planned.

4. Surgical neurophysiologist

Surgical neurophysiologists monitor a patient’s nervous system during operations on the spine, brain, blood vessels, and other delicate areas. They place electrodes before surgery and watch electrical signals from the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. If a signal suddenly changes, they alert the surgeon before permanent damage occurs.

Average pay is about $40 per hour. A common starting point is a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, or another life science, followed by employer training and supervised operating-room cases. Experienced workers may earn the CNIM credential, which requires the candidate to take an active role in setting up, troubleshooting, and monitoring documented procedures. Surgical employment is expected to grow as an aging population needs more operations. Monitoring systems can process signals, but they cannot take full responsibility for deciding whether a change is caused by anesthesia, equipment trouble, patient positioning, or an injured nerve. That call still depends on a trained person who can communicate clearly while the operation is underway.

5. Organ recovery coordinator

An organ recovery coordinator manages the complicated process that begins when a potential donor is identified. The coordinator reviews medical records, speaks with hospital teams and families, arranges testing, matches timing with transplant centers, and coordinates the operating room and transportation. Some also travel to recovery procedures and help preserve organs for delivery.

National pay averages approximately $47 per hour. Many coordinators come from nursing, respiratory therapy, emergency medicine, critical care, or paramedic work, although requirements vary by organization. The schedule can include nights, weekends, travel, and long periods on call because donation cannot be placed on hold until Monday morning. Healthcare employment is expected to grow faster than the overall job market, and transplant programs need experienced coordinators who can handle medical details and emotional conversations at the same time. Software can track records and schedules, but a person still has to guide grieving families, resolve last-minute problems, and keep several medical teams moving together under severe time pressure.

6. Prosthetist-orthotist

Prosthetist-orthotists design and fit artificial limbs, braces, and other devices that help people stand, walk, work, or recover after an injury. They measure the patient, study how the body moves, select materials, make adjustments, and continue refining the device after the patient takes it home. No two fittings are exactly alike.





Average pay is about $45 per hour. Entry normally requires a master’s degree in orthotics and prosthetics, followed by a clinical residency and certification exams. Jobs are projected to grow 13% from 2024 through 2034, much faster than the average occupation. Demand comes from diabetes-related amputations, injuries, neurological conditions, and an older population that wants to stay mobile. Digital scanning and advanced manufacturing have changed how devices are made, but they have not removed the need for hands-on fitting. A practitioner must notice pressure points, understand a patient’s gait, make physical adjustments, and earn the trust of someone learning to use a new limb or brace.

7. Industrial hygienist

Industrial hygienists find workplace hazards before those hazards make employees sick. They test air for chemicals and dust, measure noise and radiation, inspect ventilation, study how workers handle dangerous materials, and recommend safer processes. You might see them in factories, hospitals, laboratories, construction sites, energy facilities, or government agencies.

A certified industrial hygienist earns an average of about $45 per hour. Many positions require a bachelor’s degree in occupational health, chemistry, biology, engineering, or environmental science. Certification generally comes after field experience. Employment for occupational health and safety specialists and technicians is projected to grow 12% from 2024 through 2034. Regulations help support demand, but so does the cost of injuries, illnesses, shutdowns, and lawsuits. Monitoring equipment can collect readings, yet someone must decide where to test, whether workers are truly protected, and how to fix a problem without creating a different hazard elsewhere in the operation.

8. Corrosion engineer

Corrosion engineers stop bridges, pipelines, tanks, ships, processing equipment, and other metal structures from weakening or leaking. They study why materials are breaking down and choose coatings, metals, electrical protection systems, or maintenance plans that can extend the structure’s life. A small corrosion problem can become a major safety failure, so companies do not treat this work as optional.

An entry-level corrosion engineer averages about $45 per hour, while more experienced specialists can earn considerably more. Most enter with a degree in materials, chemical, mechanical, civil, or metallurgical engineering. Industry courses and certifications in coatings, cathodic protection, and corrosion control can help engineers move into more specialized projects. Employment for materials engineers is projected to grow 6% from 2024 through 2034. The work also benefits from aging infrastructure and the need to inspect systems that cannot simply be replaced every few years. Software can model corrosion, but engineers still need to inspect real equipment, interpret incomplete evidence, and recommend repairs that meet safety rules and budget limits.

9. Commissioning engineer

A commissioning engineer makes sure a new building, factory, hospital, power system, or data center actually works as designed. Before the owner takes control, the engineer tests heating, cooling, electrical, plumbing, controls, safety, and backup systems. Problems are documented and corrected before they cause an expensive shutdown.

National pay averages around $54 per hour. Many commissioning engineers have degrees in mechanical or electrical engineering, but experienced technicians, controls specialists, and skilled tradespeople can also move into commissioning work. Mechanical engineering employment is projected to grow 9% through 2034, while electrical and electronics engineering is projected to grow 7%. Demand is supported by increasingly complicated buildings, stricter energy standards, and facilities that cannot afford downtime. Automated controls may report that everything is normal, but commissioning engineers deliberately test what happens when a pump fails, a sensor lies, or backup power does not start. The job exists because real systems rarely behave exactly as they did on the drawing.





10. Fire protection specialist

Fire protection specialists study how fires could start, spread, and be controlled inside buildings or industrial sites. They review sprinkler systems, fire alarms, smoke control, evacuation plans, chemical storage, and emergency procedures. Some investigate hazards for manufacturers and insurers, while others work with engineering firms, hospitals, airports, or large property owners.

Average pay is about $54 per hour. Routes into the field include fire science, safety engineering, mechanical engineering, building inspection, or years of experience with suppression systems and fire codes. Health and safety engineering employment is projected to grow 4% through 2034, which is in line with overall job growth. The field also gains stability from building codes, insurance requirements, and the need to protect costly facilities. Design software can check parts of a plan, but it cannot walk through a crowded plant, notice blocked exits, question an unusual process, and balance several risks at once. Human judgment is especially important when a building does not fit a standard template.

11. Metrologist

A metrologist is an expert in measurement. The job is not about weather. Metrologists make sure scales, pressure gauges, temperature sensors, lasers, medical devices, and manufacturing tools produce accurate results. When a measurement is slightly wrong, an airplane part may not fit, a medicine may contain the wrong dose, or a factory may reject thousands of good products.

National pay averages around $48 per hour. Entry routes vary. Some employers seek a bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or another technical field, while others develop experienced calibration technicians who have an associate degree or military training. Specialized courses cover measurement uncertainty, laboratory standards, calibration systems, and traceability. Demand is steadier than the small job title might suggest because regulated manufacturers and laboratories must prove that their measurements can be trusted. A machine can compare two readings, but a metrologist must determine whether the test method is valid, locate the source of an error, and defend the results during an audit.

12. NDT technician IV

Nondestructive testing technicians inspect materials without cutting them open or damaging them. They use ultrasound, radiography, magnetic particles, dyes, and other methods to find hidden cracks, weak welds, corrosion, or manufacturing defects. Senior technicians may inspect aircraft parts, bridges, pipelines, power equipment, ships, or pressure vessels.

An NDT technician IV earns an average of about $43 per hour. People can enter through technical school, military maintenance, welding, machining, or an employer training program. Reaching the senior level requires documented field hours, testing experience, and industry certification. Level III specialists may also approve procedures, interpret standards, and supervise other inspectors. Demand is supported by aging equipment, strict inspection rules, and the high cost of a structural failure. Industrial machinery maintenance jobs are projected to grow rapidly through 2034, creating more need for people who can diagnose trouble before equipment breaks. Imaging tools can reveal a suspicious mark, but a trained inspector must decide whether it is harmless, a testing error, or a defect serious enough to shut down the equipment.

13. Pipeline system controller

Pipeline system controllers monitor the movement of oil, natural gas, chemicals, and other products through long networks of pumps, valves, tanks, and pipes. They work from control rooms filled with screens and alarms. When pressure changes or equipment fails, the controller may slow the flow, shut a section down, contact field crews, and begin an emergency response.





Average pay is approximately $52 per hour. Employers usually provide extensive training on their own pipeline network, operating procedures, alarm system, and emergency plans. Mechanical, process-operations, military, utility, or refinery experience can help candidates break in. Shift work is common because pipelines operate around the clock. Modern control rooms use automated monitoring, but federal safety rules still require qualified controllers, fatigue-management procedures, training, and careful attention to human factors. That is because a computer alarm does not understand the full situation. A trained controller must decide whether a reading signals a leak, a bad sensor, a routine operating change, or an emergency that requires shutting down miles of pipeline.

14. Marine surveyor

Marine surveyors inspect boats, cargo ships, work vessels, offshore equipment, and marine structures. They look for hull damage, corrosion, machinery problems, unsafe modifications, and signs that a vessel has not been maintained properly. Banks, insurers, buyers, shipping companies, attorneys, and vessel owners use their reports to make expensive decisions.

National pay averages about $41 per hour. There is no single entry path. Surveyors may come from marine engineering, naval architecture, commercial sailing, ship repair, boatbuilding, or military maritime work. Technical knowledge matters, but so does the ability to write a clear report and defend an opinion when several parties disagree. Employment for surveyors is projected to grow about as fast as the overall job market through 2034. Marine survey work also stays necessary because vessels face weather, saltwater, heavy loads, collisions, and constant vibration. Drones and cameras can help reach difficult areas, but they do not replace someone who can tap a hull, trace a leak, test machinery, question the maintenance history, and recognize when a repair is hiding a deeper problem.

15. Packaging engineer

Packaging engineers design the containers, cushioning, seals, labels, and shipping systems that protect products from the factory to the customer. The job can involve medical devices, food, electronics, hazardous materials, cosmetics, or heavy industrial equipment. Engineers test whether packages survive drops, vibration, heat, cold, moisture, pressure, and rough handling.

Average pay is around $51 per hour. Common degree paths include packaging science, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science. Employers also value experience with manufacturing, quality testing, regulations, and supply chains. Industrial engineering employment is projected to grow 11% through 2034 as companies try to reduce waste and improve production. Packaging engineers also face new work as businesses replace hard-to-recycle materials and redesign products for online delivery. Software can create a box shape, but it cannot fully predict how a package will behave on a wet loading dock, in a vibrating truck, or in the hands of a frustrated customer. Physical testing and practical judgment remain central to the job.

16. Forensic toxicologist

Forensic toxicologists test blood, urine, tissue, and other samples for alcohol, medications, illegal drugs, poisons, and chemicals. Their findings may be used in death investigations, impaired-driving cases, workplace incidents, criminal trials, or questions about whether a drug contributed to an injury. The work requires careful laboratory methods because results may be challenged in court.

Average pay is approximately $41 per hour. Most positions require at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, or forensic science. Graduate study, laboratory experience, and professional certification can open doors to more advanced work. Employers include crime laboratories, medical examiner offices, hospitals, private testing companies, and federal agencies. Forensic science technician jobs are projected to grow 13% from 2024 through 2034. Laboratory instruments can identify possible substances, but a toxicologist must confirm the result, rule out contamination, understand how drugs interact, and explain what the concentration does or does not prove. That interpretation becomes especially important when someone’s freedom, job, or cause of death is at stake.

17. Sensory scientist

Sensory scientists study how people experience food, drinks, personal-care products, fragrances, and household goods. They design controlled tests to measure taste, smell, texture, appearance, and even the sound a product makes when opened or eaten. A company may call one when a cereal loses its crunch, a drink develops an odd aftertaste, or customers dislike a new formula.

National pay averages about $53 per hour, with a typical range of roughly $46 to $60. Many sensory scientists study food science, chemistry, psychology, statistics, or consumer science. They also learn how to recruit tasting panels, control testing conditions, analyze results, and separate real product differences from personal preference. Agricultural and food scientist employment is projected to grow 6% through 2034. Demand comes from new-product launches, ingredient changes, quality problems, and pressure to make products healthier without making them taste worse. Computer models can organize responses, but people still eat, smell, touch, and use the products. A skilled scientist is needed to design a fair test and understand why consumers react the way they do.

18. Flavorist

A flavorist creates and adjusts the flavors used in drinks, snacks, candy, sauces, medicines, nutritional products, and other goods. The job blends chemistry with an unusually sharp sense of taste and smell. Flavorists may spend weeks rebuilding a natural strawberry taste, hiding bitterness in a medicine, or making a plant-based food taste more familiar.

Average pay is about $47 per hour. A degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or food science is a common starting point, but school alone does not make someone a flavorist. Newcomers typically train under experienced professionals and learn hundreds of aroma chemicals, extracts, oils, and reactions through years of supervised practice. Full professional recognition can require a seven-year apprenticeship. Food science employment is projected to grow faster than the overall job market through 2034, and flavor work remains important as companies reformulate products around allergies, sugar, salt, cost, and new ingredients. Analytical equipment can identify chemicals in a sample, but it cannot decide whether the final flavor feels fresh, comforting, artificial, weak, or simply unpleasant to a human palate.
