A flashy job title doesn’t pay the mortgage. Sometimes the better move is work that sounds dull, involves plenty of checklists, and has fewer people fighting to get through the door.

Many of these jobs involve watching gauges, reviewing records, inspecting equipment, or making sure someone followed a rule. They aren’t exciting dinner-party conversation, but they serve industries that can’t simply stop maintaining pipes, hospitals, factories, elevators, ships, and public infrastructure.

Several require a license, technical training, or years of related experience. That smaller pool of qualified workers is exactly why employers often struggle to keep the positions filled.

Pipeline controllers spend long shifts in control rooms watching pressure, flow, temperature, and alarm readings. You may sit at the same bank of monitors for hours while almost nothing happens. When a reading moves outside its normal range, however, you must decide whether it is a faulty sensor, an equipment problem, or the start of a leak. The job also involves logging every change, talking with field crews, and following detailed shutdown procedures.

Average pay is about $42 an hour. Employers include pipeline companies, fuel terminals, utilities, and chemical plants. Many hire people with industrial operations experience, an associate degree, or military technical training, then provide extensive control-room instruction. These facilities operate around the clock, so nights, weekends, and holidays are common. That schedule drives away plenty of applicants. Pipelines still need constant human supervision, emergency decisions, and communication with technicians in the field, which supports steady demand even as monitoring systems become more advanced.

This job is mostly about looking at trees near power lines and deciding what needs to be trimmed. You drive or walk along utility routes, compare branches with clearance rules, photograph problem areas, mark locations, and prepare work orders for tree crews. A large part of the day may be spent explaining to property owners why a limb must come down or checking whether a contractor completed a previous assignment correctly.

Utility vegetation work planners average around $40 an hour. Utilities, tree-service contractors, and environmental consulting firms hire for the role. Experience in forestry, landscaping, line clearance, or utility work can help, and an arborist credential may open more doors. Demand is being supported by storm preparation, wildfire prevention, and the need to keep aging electrical systems reliable. A computer can organize inspection records, but someone still has to visit the route, judge the condition of each tree, speak with landowners, and make a defensible safety call.

Metal pipelines, storage tanks, bridges, and water systems slowly corrode underground or underwater. Cathodic protection technicians try to stop that process by testing electrical currents and protective coatings. The daily work can be repetitive. You visit test stations, connect meters, record tiny voltage changes, inspect cables, and compare the numbers with previous readings. Some assignments involve long drives between remote pieces of infrastructure.

An experienced cathodic protection technician III earns about $43 an hour. Employers include utilities, engineering firms, pipeline operators, water authorities, and industrial plants. Many technicians begin in corrosion, electrical maintenance, inspection, or pipeline work and build industry certifications as they advance. The talent pool is small because the work combines field skills, electrical testing, strict documentation, and specialized credentials. Corrosion never takes a year off, and neglected metal can lead to leaks, shutdowns, or expensive structural damage. That keeps qualified technicians valuable even when construction activity slows.

Metrology is the science of measurement, but the job often feels like repeatedly proving that a measuring tool still measures correctly. Technicians calibrate scales, pressure gauges, temperature sensors, micrometers, torque tools, and laboratory equipment. You compare each device with a known standard, adjust it when necessary, attach a calibration label, and create a record showing exactly what you did.

A metrology technician III averages about $40 an hour. These technicians work in aerospace plants, pharmaceutical facilities, medical-device factories, research laboratories, and advanced manufacturing. An associate degree in electronics or engineering technology can help, though experienced maintenance and quality technicians also move into the field. Employers struggle to find people who understand both precision instruments and the paperwork required in regulated facilities. Calibration schedules are mandatory in many workplaces, and the technician must investigate damaged equipment, judge whether earlier measurements are still trustworthy, and sign off on the result.

Nondestructive testing technician III

Nondestructive testing technicians search for cracks, weak welds, corrosion, and hidden flaws without cutting the equipment apart. Depending on the assignment, you may use ultrasound, radiography, magnetic particles, or liquid dye. Much of the job involves preparing surfaces, moving a probe slowly across the same kind of part, interpreting faint signals, and documenting every indication you find.

A level III technician earns about $36 an hour. Aerospace manufacturers, power facilities, shipyards, refineries, construction firms, and inspection contractors all need this work. Reaching level III requires documented experience, method-specific training, and certification exams, so it is not an instant career change. That difficult qualification process limits the number of candidates. Bridges, aircraft parts, pressure systems, and structural welds must be checked by people who can recognize an unusual result and decide whether the equipment is safe. Travel and irregular shutdown schedules also make these jobs harder to staff.

It is repetitive hospital work built around strict procedures. One damaged instrument or incomplete tray can delay an entire surgical schedule.





Average pay is about $45 an hour. Most managers start as sterile processing technicians, earn professional certification, and move up after several years of department experience. Hospitals and surgery centers prefer leaders who understand infection-control rules, instrument identification, staffing, and equipment maintenance. Surgical departments cannot operate without a reliable supply of sterile tools, yet the work is physically demanding and often happens on evenings or overnight shifts. Those conditions contribute to high turnover. Automated washers and tracking systems help, but a trained person still has to inspect instruments, investigate failed sterilization cycles, and decide whether a tray is safe to use.

It is detail-heavy work, and success often means nothing dramatic happened because the right precautions were followed.

The job averages about $45 an hour. Hospitals, nursing facilities, clinics, public health organizations, and medical groups hire infection preventionists. Many come from nursing, laboratory science, epidemiology, or public health and later earn an infection-control credential. Healthcare facilities face continuing pressure to reduce preventable infections and document their safety practices. Qualified applicants are limited because employers want both clinical knowledge and the confidence to challenge managers or physicians when procedures are being ignored. Software can organize case data, but it cannot walk through a unit, question staff, spot a risky habit, and persuade people to change it.

Electroneurodiagnostic technologist

Electroneurodiagnostic technologists attach electrodes to patients and record electrical activity from the brain and nervous system. A routine test may involve measuring a patient’s head, placing dozens of sensors, checking each connection, and waiting while the equipment records. You must keep the patient still, watch for unusual patterns, and correct loose wires or electrical interference without ruining the study.

Average pay is about $36 an hour. Employers include hospitals, neurology practices, sleep centers, epilepsy programs, and surgical monitoring companies. Entry paths commonly include a one-year certificate or two-year allied-health program followed by professional registration. Demand is supported by an aging population, more neurological testing, and the growing use of nerve monitoring during surgery. The work can be quiet and repetitive, but it requires patient care and close attention. A technologist must recognize poor-quality signals, respond when a patient has a seizure, and make immediate adjustments during delicate procedures.

Industrial hygienists look for workplace hazards such as chemical vapors, loud machinery, dust, mold, heat, and poor ventilation. A degree in occupational health, chemistry, engineering, or a related science is common, and experienced workers may pursue a demanding professional certification. Workplace safety employment is expected to grow as employers face tighter reporting duties and greater attention to employee health. Instruments can collect readings, but a hygienist must decide where to sample, understand how workers actually perform a task, and judge whether a technically legal exposure is still unsafe.

Environmental compliance inspectors check whether construction sites, factories, waste facilities, and public projects are following permit conditions. You may inspect drainage controls, review discharge records, photograph storage tanks, collect samples, and compare a site’s paperwork with what is happening on the ground. Much of the job is walking with a checklist and documenting small problems before they become expensive ones.

Experienced inspectors can earn about $43 an hour. Employers include engineering consultants, environmental contractors, utilities, industrial companies, and public agencies. People often enter through environmental science, construction inspection, water treatment, hazardous materials, or erosion-control work. Demand stays steady because permits require recurring inspections and because violations can stop a project or trigger major cleanup costs. Remote sensors may show that something changed, but an inspector still has to visit the location, determine what caused it, interview responsible staff, and create a record that can stand up during an enforcement action.

Right-of-way agents obtain permission to build roads, pipelines, power lines, water systems, and communications equipment across privately owned land. The work involves reading deeds, checking ownership records, ordering appraisals, explaining easements, and negotiating payment. Some days are spent driving to properties. Others disappear into title documents, maps, spreadsheets, and repeated phone calls with owners who do not want to sign.

Average pay is about $49 an hour. Utilities, transportation agencies, engineering firms, pipeline companies, and communications providers employ these agents. Useful backgrounds include real estate, surveying, title work, appraisal, construction, and land administration. Professional right-of-way credentials can improve your chances after you gain experience. Infrastructure projects cannot move forward until access and ownership problems are settled. The legal documents also require careful human review, and negotiations often involve family land, farms, or complicated inheritance issues. That mix of paperwork and uncomfortable conversations keeps the applicant pool smaller than employers would like.

Marine surveyor

Marine surveyors inspect ships, barges, cargo equipment, docks, and smaller commercial vessels. You may spend hours measuring steel thickness, checking safety gear, photographing corrosion, reviewing maintenance logs, and testing pumps or alarms. Average pay is about $41 an hour. Many surveyors begin as ship engineers, mechanics, captains, naval technicians, or marine inspectors. Industry credentials and knowledge of vessel construction can matter more than a general degree. Ports, insurers, shipping companies, inspection firms, and vessel owners need surveys before purchases, repairs, insurance renewals, and certain voyages. Qualified workers are difficult to replace because the job requires hands-on inspection and practical knowledge of how ships deteriorate. It can also mean climbing ladders, entering cramped machinery spaces, and working around a vessel’s operating schedule.

Maintenance planner

Maintenance planners decide when industrial equipment should be serviced and make sure the necessary parts, technicians, instructions, and permits are ready. You spend much of the day reviewing work requests, checking equipment history, building job plans, and moving tasks around a calendar. When planning is done well, mechanics spend less time hunting for parts and production lines suffer fewer surprise shutdowns.





Average pay is about $43 an hour. Manufacturing plants, warehouses, utilities, mines, hospitals, and food-processing facilities employ maintenance planners. Employers often prefer former mechanics, electricians, or technicians who understand how long repairs really take. Experience with maintenance-management systems is also useful. Companies are investing more in preventive maintenance as machinery becomes more expensive and production delays become harder to absorb. Scheduling software can arrange dates, but it cannot easily judge whether a repair needs two electricians, a crane, a shutdown permit, or a hard-to-find seal that takes weeks to arrive.

Electrical instrumentation technicians maintain the sensors and controls that tell industrial equipment what to do. They test pressure transmitters, temperature probes, flow meters, control valves, and electrical circuits. A large part of the job involves performing the same loop checks, comparing readings, tightening connections, and documenting every adjustment. When a process gives a strange reading, you must trace the problem through wiring, software settings, and physical equipment.

The job averages about $38 an hour. These technicians work in water plants, factories, power facilities, food-processing operations, chemical plants, and pharmaceutical production. Common entry routes include an associate degree, industrial apprenticeship, military electronics training, or experience as an electrician. Plants may install more automatic controls, but that creates more sensors and control devices that require calibration, repair, and safety testing. A faulty reading can ruin a production batch or shut down an entire facility, so employers need people who can work safely on live systems and understand the physical process behind the screen.

The work follows a long checklist covering brakes, doors, cables, switches, alarms, and backup systems. You may inspect the same types of equipment every day and spend almost as much time documenting results as performing tests.

Most arrive with years of experience installing or repairing elevators, followed by additional inspector training and certification. That background requirement makes qualified applicants scarce. Elevators and escalators must receive recurring inspections, and older buildings need extra attention as equipment wears out or is modernized. Remote monitoring can report an error code, but an inspector still has to test the machinery, verify the repair, interpret the code, and accept personal responsibility for approving equipment used by the public.

Food safety lead auditor

Travel is a major reason employers have trouble filling these jobs. A digital system can flag a missing record, but it cannot smell a sanitation problem, notice poor employee habits, or decide whether a facility’s explanation is believable.

Software may handle scheduling and forms, but families still expect a responsible person to explain choices, solve problems, and oversee the care of their loved one.

Surveying equipment can collect points faster than it once did, but a licensed professional must still reconcile bad records, interpret boundaries, consider evidence found on the land, and sign documents that carry legal weight. Retirements among experienced surveyors are also creating openings that take years to fill.
