Here is a list of my favorite tools. I have personally vetted every single one of these brands and researched them for you. For some links, I do receive a commission, and I don’t feel bad about that: These are great products that might make your life better, and the more money I earn, the more time and energy I can focus on supporting single moms. Have I ever steered you wrong?
Worthy.com. I can’t recommend this enough: Just get rid of it. One woman I know put hers in the collection plate at church, another climbed a big mountain, wrapped it in hair bands, and tossed it from the summit. If you chose to sell yours, I highly recommend the diamond auction site Worthy, which will send you a mailer envelope, and you set the minimum price, so you are always in control of the process. Haven Life. I don’t care how broke you are, single moms need life insurance. Chances are, your kids are financially dependent on you. For as low as $9 per month, you can get up to $1 million in coverage — plus sleep easier knowing you are taking care of your family. I endorse Haven Life, which is backed and wholly owned by MassMutual — a top-rated life insurer. They offer great online tools like a calculator and quote page, friendly support and highly competitive rates. Get a life insurance quote here: Better Business Bureau A+ Rating.
Find a babysitter.
Care.com. Every single mom needs two things: a roster of fantastic babysitters that you can count on, and whom your
kids love, so you can work, have a social and romantic life, and feel good about it since your kids are in great care. Care.com is a fantastic site that connects qualified, vetted, child care providers with moms who need those services! I cannot recommend this site enough. Thank me later. Find a housekeeper.
Care.com. You also need a housecleaner. Professional women should not spend more than a few hours per week TOTAL (or less, ideally) on cleaning, laundry and other housekeeping work. Care.com also has a deep roster of vetted housecleaners who will save your sanity – and possibly life. Better Business Bureau A- Rating.
Start a blog (or website).
BlueHost. One of the top questions I get from moms is: “I want to be a blogger / writer! How do I get started?!” You can read all my advice here, but the very first thing you must do is buy a url and get a web host. I love BlueHost, and love their awesome step-by-step video their nice nerd created on how to create a site on WordPress (which I also use) Better Business Bureau A+ Rating.
FlexJobs. I’m not going to sugar-coat this: One of the reasons I can earn so much money and be really happy is because I am my own boss, and I work from home most of the time (network appearances and speaking engagements not withstanding). My No. 1 most favoriteist resource for finding flexible, part-time, work-from home, telecommute and other mom-friendly professional jobs is FlexJobs, started by an actual human mom who wanted more out of her own life! Gigs for every profession, around the country and beyond! Better Business Bureau A+ Rating.
Avvo. Whether you’re going through divorce, a breakup with your kids’ dad, negotiating child support or visitation schedules, or otherwise have legal questions, head to Avvo. You can read reviews and find a qualified lawyer in your area. You can also ask legal questions of attorneys in your FOR FREE. Tons of articles, and resources for all kinds of law: employment, DUI, criminal defense, immigration, business, landlord.
Match.com. First of all, thank you for reading that. I suggest starting on Match.com, which is the oldest and biggest online dating site. Just go there, get your feet wet, then feel free to explore other sites. Ask your local friends which sites they use, as each site tends to have a different vibe depending on the location. OKCupid, Bumble, PlentyoFish, Tinder tend to be hot now.
